Ten minutes to the south of Villa Serena, lies Playa Camaronal, a remote beach with greyish sand and blue waters, which is a popular nesting site for leatherback (Mar–Apr) and olive ridley turtles (year round). About Denisse Cobert

Denisse and William lived in Switzerland for many years. Renovated and renewed several gentlemen farmhouses, and after extensively traveling around the globe, looking for the perfect place as part of living the happiest possible life, they chose the Pacific Ocean side of lovely Costa Rica.

Denisse Cobert purchased this villa in 2012

Why Denisse Cobert chose Costa Rica

Villa Serena is a unique oceanfront jewel. The Tuscan architecture has been deployed with solid bases and unparalleled attention to detail. The architect and builder is world-renowned (Philadelphia Airport, and several high-rises on the biggest cities around the globe).

What makes this villa unique

Splendid Pacific Ocean views and impeccable finishes.

The previous owner of Villa Serena is a Canadian investor who built the villa as his private vacation home with no budget restrictions. Villa Serena was built by Italian developer Sam Alibrando with high attention to detail and the highest standards of quality of construction. The location of Villa Serena is a privileged one; anyone going there just falls in love immediately after stepping out of the car. The sounds of the waves crashing against the rocks and the peacefulness of its blue ocean, the magnificent sunsets and the marine breeze, makes days at Villa Serena a magic experience that people want to repeat over and over again. Villa Serena is located near Carrillo, in a very private setting, completely away from the noise and busy streets of towns. No one can predict there is such a beautiful villa there, when entering the gravel road for the first time.

The new owners of Villa Serena just turned it into a very unique oceanfront vacation rental home. And Villa Serena has it all to guarantee the best vacations one can have in its lifetime. The danger of coming to Villa Serena... is not wanting to leave when the time is over!

Villa Serena is a magical Tuscan Style villa with the benefits of the majestic Pacific Ocean right out the back door!

We had a wonderful time at Villa Serena. Marcia and Modesto were incredibly helpful and kind. Marcia's guacamole was the best we've ever had. We loved watching the monkeys and birds all around the property. We had some wonderful evenings with some heated card games and scrabble. However, the biggest hit was Dana, the incredibly sweet dog, that we didn't even know was there the first couple of days, but once the kids discovered her we couldn't keep them away from her. The only issue we had was that the power went out a few times, but it never took long for it to come back on. We wished that our stay had been longer.

Owner's Response: Dear Catherine, We are so glad that you enjoyed your vacation! Marcia and Modesto are indeed creating a very special atmosphere in Villa Serena. Because of the remote location, the electricity grid can be challenged during the green season, but usualy it comes back up after a few minutes. We hope to have you visiting soon again!

Peaceful Oasis

  • 5 of 5

After months of research, days of packing, 12 hours of air travel and 2 hours of driving from Liberia, we were ready to exhale. Villa Serena is appropriately named and exactly what we needed. From the moment the gate closes you relax. The home is cool and comfortable, the views are amazing, and the pool is refreshing.

We were a party of 9 and had plenty of space and all of the beds are comfortable. Since this home is in a quiet area, it is quiet. I didn't really appreciate this fact until we stayed "in town" in another area and were serenaded by dogs and roosters all night.

Playa Rubelo (sp?) is the little beach right below the property. It is not a swimming beach but has lots of tidal pools at low tide and a nice splash area at high tide. Pretty rocks, lots of hermit crabs and colorful fish. Tip: when giving directions to tour guides mention Villas at Playa Rubelo.

We arrived later in the day, so we stopped at the local market for some snacks and breakfast items. Modesto was there to open the gate, show us around the property and welcome us.

Modesto does a fantastic job of maintaining the property and security was not an issue. (Modesto and Marcia live onsite.) My daughter left her drivers license and wallet at the property and we were quickly informed of the problem so we were able to come back and pick it up before we left the country. Everyone one else in the home left their iPads, etc..laying around during our stay without any worries and there is a safe in the master bedroom if needed.

Take advantage of Macia's cooking, you will miss it. It is better than the food you will have in town and much more affordable. It was a treat to come back to the Villa after a full day at the beach and have dinner waiting for us. We took Marcia to the markets in Samara and stocked up for several days. We had one child with a gluten allergy and one parent with diabetes and she was able to accommodate us easily. She knows where to go for the best and freshest food. Tip: there is a notebook in the kitchen with descriptions of her typical meals and the ingredients you will need to purchase.

Spanish is not necessary but knowing some simple conversation (you'll be surprised at how much you already know) will be helpful not only with Marcia and Modesto but throughout this amazing country.

Samara and Carrillo are easy to get to and Denisse and William are very easy to work with. I highly recommend Villa Serena.

Perfect Recharging and Romantic Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I just left Villa Serena yesterday after spending our fifth wedding anniversary there, and we already are missing everything about it. The home is beautiful, especially the kitchen, but that almost does not matter because the outdoor spaces and the phenomenal views are magical. The sounds of the waves crashing on the rocky beach below and views of those waves and spray were constant beautiful and calming companions during our stay. The views can be enjoyed from the windows in the home, from the upstairs terrace, from the pool, from the balcony/deck off the living room, from the gorgeous gazebo with dining for eight in the yard, from the deck chairs in front of the gazebo, from the swing hanging from the tree...etc. The beach can be accessed from the house by climbing down the rocky/leafy "path", which is not bad at all for most (may be difficult for very small children), but the beach is too rough and rocky to swim. However just a few yards down the beach, there is the most incredible calm natural tidal pool teaming with small fish and surrounded by the wild rock and crashing waves. There often are others swimming there, but it is never crowded and largely feels private to the house. It is truly a unique and gorgeous feature that is easily accessible from the home.

I have not even gotten to Marcia and Modesto, the most welcoming hosts we could have hoped for. Yes, we don't speak Spanish, and they don't speak English, but the Google translate app and gestures do wonders! Marcia is the one of the sweetest individuals I have met, and was great fun to talk to and spend time with (despite not speaking each other's language). Modesto was quieter, but always had a smile when he saw us and clearly cares deeply about the property and its guests. When our rental car battery died, he did not hesitate to help find another car and helped hook up the jumper cables to make sure we could get back on the road. I don't even know how to talk about Marcia's cooking without sounding hyperbolic. She helped us buy seafood and prepared everything in a fresh and healthy way that was just incredibly delicious. We ate out a few times, and nothing - I mean NOTHING - approached the deliciousness of Marcia's food. We felt so lucky to spend time at this gorgeous property, and to have two wonderful people host us. We will be back wiht our entire family sooner rather than later!

Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Marcia & Modesto for an amazing vacation at Villa Serena. The house, the location, the entire property was beautiful. Marcia is so sweet and her cooking was amazing. The only downfall was the language barrier between us but thank goodness for Google Translator. I'm very motivated now to learn to speak better Spanish. There were only a couple minor things that we felt needed to be addressed: Your cookware supply is dismal. There were only two frying pans - both of which were ready for the garbage - the one pan had a loose handle (which we kept tightening but the screw was stripped and both pans - the teflon is worn off. We chose to cook ourselves a couple times and found it a bit frustrating with the lack of pots and pans. The dishwasher is on its last legs so we suggest replacing or getting it fixed. We washed all our dishes by hand because it did not clean at all. We put all our ingredients into the blender to make Mango Margaritas but the blender was not working either. The motor works but the blades to not turn & when we looked at it you could tell that the grooves were stripped that makes the blade turn - so a good quality new blender is also another suggestion. Lastly, we found that the chairs and the shade umbrellas around the pool area needing upgrading. The dollar-store quality fold-out chairs were just that. Perhaps a few more comfortable loungers would be a good idea. Regardless of these few minor things that need fixing, or replacing, we all had a fantastic vacation. I would highly recommend this place to anyone considering a Costa Rica vacation.

Owner's Response: Dear Barb, It was a pleasure to host you and your friends in Villa Serena. We are sorry that the blender gave up during your stay and we have replaced it at once. For the kitchen equipment, we rely completely on input from our cook Matcia and she had never mentioned any problem... as they say, the best soups are cooked in old pots!... In any case, we have acquired a broad choice of news pots and pans, ready to be used. Guests should not do any cleaning of dishes or anything else, as Marcia will gladly do it for you! When we asked Marcia if the dishwasher is functioning badly, she said: No, it works very well!... About the garden furniture, it seems like you used the light carry-on beach chairs which are available to be taken by our guests to the beach. Although there are already quite a few, we will gladly buy some more loungers for your next stay!

Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

I used awesome as a title because that is what I heard every day during our stay at Villa Serena from at least one of the group.

We had 10 adults and a child. Grandpa & Grandma, three adult children and their children. I worried a lot about how it would work out

as I made the arrangements for everyone after much research. The owners were very helpful while I asked a gazillon questions before the trip.

We could not have asked for more. The villa was even more beautiful than the pictures showed, if that's possible. The owners have spared no expense to make it five star. We utilized every inch of the bautifully maintained property. Particularly enjoyable were the evenings in the cabana with the beautiful sunsets and star filled sky. No review would be complete without mentioning Marcia and Modesto. They are priceless. There were tears when we left them. What a special couple! Marcia's Gallo Pinto was a special treat.

The trip to Arenal was long but the zip lining was worth it. It was very cloudy and rainy so we did not do the volcano hike. Carrillo & Samara beaches were wonderful. Clean and beautiful Another outing was to dinner up the road at Leyenda Hotel. Very accommodating service . We asked for something special and they came up with a wonderful passion fruit mousse which was to die for. At the villa we enjoyed the tide pools, the resident iguana and the mile walk to the neighborhood store (good workout). After that a dip in the beautiful pool was welcome. It will be very difficult to top this family vacation. Pura Vida!!!

Villa Serena also offers the ideal location for a wedding or important celebration. Stylish settings, fine cuisine and wines (on request), gracious hosting and luxurious accommodation, make Villa Serena a unique venue. Puerto Carrillo, situated along the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica's Guanacaste Province, is known for its jewel among Pacific beaches. The town itself is very small (less than 500 full-time residents) and is predominantly a sport-fishing village with a variety of nice hotels, restaurants and tour operators. The population in Carrillo is mainly local residents and still maintains an authentically Costa Rican atmosphere. Puerto Carrillo is a small unobtrusive community that has been playing host to some of the most well renown sport fishing boats in the world, since its discovery as a billfish destination over 15 years ago. The small town boasts several hotels, fine restaurants, stores, a small airstrip, and one of the most beautiful white sand beaches in Costa Rica. The tiny harbor affords protection to a small handful of charter and private boats that are here on permanent bases. The beautiful white sand beach is popular with swimmers and an ideal beach for your kids.

Playa Carrillo ranks among the Final Four for 25 Best Secret Beaches on Earth (Travel and Leisure March 2012). Just south of the popular surfer’s paradise of Samara Beach, Playa Carrillo is one of the least developed spots on the Nicoya Peninsula. Framed by mountains, the laid-back fishing village has a white-sand beach just off a palm-lined boulevard (there are no unsightly beachfront buildings). Known among divers for its excellent coral reef teeming with marine life, the beach is protected by rocky headlands, providing calm, warm water for swimmers. Don’t miss the La Selva Zoo and Bromeliad Gardens at the southern end of the bay.
