About Sandra Whitcher
My husband Stephen and I currently live within the grounds of Coffeeriver Cottages so are on hand to answer any of your questions. My husband is a New Zealander, an accomplished builder: indeed he built our properties and the cottages that you will be staying in. Myself I am Canadian if you have any questions would only be too glad to answer them if it will enhance your stay with us.
Sandra Whitcher purchased this Cottage in 2010
Why Sandra Whitcher chose Marigot
Due Hurricane Marie only 30% hotels left available on the Island. We had no damage during the storm. We have Solar Power for Electric & Hot Water, 2000gls of water, generators emergency for back up. Off-grid vacation on The Nature Island • Environment-Friendly • Family Friendly More Solar Panels supplying power for lighting, with a generator for Emergency back up etc. Self-Contained for Self-Catering Are electrical outlets 110v? Are the American or European style. Answer=Both A Paradise for all your Family Just steps from your door is a charming little river complete with a "paddling" pool for toddlers, a swimming hole for older children. We have tubes for extra fun in the water. There's plenty of room for children to play and explore. Please note: For your safety, we insist that children be supervised at all times.

Sandra and Stephen are the perfect hosts- I cannot say enough great things about our stay. The cottage we rented was beautiful and surrounded by stunning flowers and birds, not to mention a river to splash in. Our hosts were very welcoming and knowledgeable about the area and gave us great advice on what to do and where to go. I really wish we could have stayed forever. This is truly Paradise. Thank you again. Hope to see you soon.
Thank you so much my friend, was a great review and we enjoyed you guys SO much. Can't think of a nicer couple. Wish you would come again and stay longer. However I know you travel a lot so I will not hold my breath. haha. You are the greatest together.
Things going OK. we will stay in touch as promised.
Beautiful setting, kind hostess and host. Would be 5* with maintenance and improved amenities.
We stayed at Garden View Villa for 1 month with our family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children age 11, 2.5y, and 10m). There truly is no place on earth like Dominica. Beautiful rivers, verdant rain forests, beautiful waterfalls, & diverse beaches are 2nd to none. In this place Nature is constantly moving in & will quickly reclaim anything that is not meticulously maintained.
The grounds at Coffee River Cottages are located 8-10 min drive down a VERY rough road. The road is lined by farms, & a few typical Dominican homes. As you drive along you pass goats, cattle, plaintain farms, coconut palms, & a busy body shop near the intersection with the main road. We didn't have any trouble navigating it with our four wheel drive. A well maintained concrete rd. begins at or near the Coffee River property & takes you the rest of the way to your villa. It took a few days to get used to this commute; after a week or so we barely noticed the bumps & became pros at bracing ourselves so we didn't bonk our heads on the car. I feel bad mentioning the road, because it is beyond the control of the home owners, but If you are considering staying for a while like we did you may want to factor this into your decision.
The grounds are well maintained, Stephen is a meticulous gardener & has kept nature tamed in their little corner. You will enjoy the insect orchestra performance that begins every night at dusk. Don't worry, they don't bother you with their presence - but they will sing to you all night long. The sound of the river is also soothing - and varies in intensity based on the amount of rain. The swimming hole in the river is beautiful, clean, and enjoyable to swim in. We loved spending time down there.
There is not internet service in the villas. It is available on owner front porch. The owner prefers to limit the access so as to keep expectations in line with reality when it comes to the speed of internet service in a third world country. This is only a minor inconvenience for short stays - but if you plan a longer work-n-play stay this is not a good option. I would recommend getting a data chip from Flow/Digicel and arranging for your own service.
No laundry on site and no laundry service in a close distance. For longer stays this is a considerable inconvenience.
Missing Screens. The open air concept is fine for a few days - but not for living w/ babies. Every window needs screens.
We love our hosts. They have poured their heart into CRC.
Thank you for taking the time to do this review.
I have read your review, thank you for the Pros. As far as the Cons go that all takes time. There are not many TOURIST accommodations that can take that large amount of people which can suit or satisfy all the cons you suggested.
I think that when people come to The Nature Island of the Caribbean they would expect nature living. That's what we provide. Perhaps you are right, small babies up to 5 yrs, don't fit into nature as well as the older children , 5 or so.
As far as the wi-fi goes you are correct if you are here for business for an extended time we aren't the place for you. That is not our usual guests that are on wi-fi a lot. I will not be placing wi-fi in the units themselves, due to the speed of the Internet.
When you asked me about the wi-fi, it was to be for your son to do school work nothing else was mentioned about business requirements.
We trust you all enjoyed sitting on our veranda using all of your different devices.
We are glad that one could help.
The open air concept can be decided by the guest whether to close or not. Most people love it that is one reason they come.
We do not have the facilities here for extended washing for our guests personal clothing. There is a lady 20 minutes away of which you were informed of, that took in laundry.
Yes I agree with you, the road is bumpy, that is well documented. Yes a 4x4 jeep is recommended for travel on the island of Dominica, however no one has ever had to use their 4x4 coming up our road.
maintenance and improved amenities
Maintenance is always on going as you know, as far as amenities, we do our best with what we can do living OFF THE GRID.
Thank you for staying with us and hopefully when you come back you will be more aware of what we have on offer.
Beautiful and secluded - Awesome
This was our second trip to Dominica. We originally came for the natural beauty but will return for the wonderful people. Sandra and Stephen are accommodating and welcoming hosts. They are our family now! We are so grateful for having such wonderful folks helping us navigate the island. Without Sandra and Stephen it would have been difficult to learn local culture. We love you guys!!!!
You can schedule a local dinner through Sandra. She knows where the best eateries are. She can even arrange a pub crawl! Local rum and beer!!!
One of the best reviews ever, thank you so much, I hope it goes to TripAdvisor through Home-away.
We had a great time didn't we, that is the fabulous thing about hosting here at Coffeeriver Cottages. The people we meet and have fun with from all over the world..
We have a Coffeeriver Cottages, on Facebook, Google Plus, if you wish to follow us.
Thank you again much appreciated.

Dominica is one of the Caribbean's most unspoiled destinations. Lush and mountainous, its rich rainforest embraces rare bird species, crater lakes, tumbling cascades which include the Trafalgar Falls, beautiful grottoes, and hot springs. Divers will adore the teeming reefs and underwater fumaroles. It really is a natural paradise. If you have any specific request for an activity you're interested in, we will try to accommodate you.
