Keywords: Oceanfront cottage deepwater shorefront secluded
My family has owned this property since the mid seventies. Dee lived here permanently for 17 years. John and I consider moving back permanently at some point in the not-so-distant future.
Dee purchased this cottage in 1975
Pristine refuge on a quiet, tide-charged, nature abundant, deeply wooded, ocean front peninsula. 15 miles from the village. Exquisite opportunities for biking, hiking, boating, swimming, roasting marshmallows and sitting around a wood stove. Great refuge from the crowds and easy distance from Acadia National Park for day tripping.
Waterfront tranquility, access to nature, privacy and stunning views across the bay to Acadia National Park. Perfect for sailing. You are welcome to anchor right out front. Kayaks can be rented and dropped off right at your doorstep. This sort of deep water pristine shorefront, where you walk to the beach from your front yard, is an increasingly endangered species. Enjoy it while it lasts!
"Summer was almost gone when we suddenly decided that we would need a
vacation. Since in Northern Virginia area where we live was quite hot, we
thought that Maine would be a good choice. We haven't been before up there
and therefore only when I started to look for a rental I realized it could
be difficult to find something that we would like. I almost abandoned the
search when my husband surprisingly (he usually doesn't get himself involved
in vacation's planning) send me the link and the Mapquest satellite view of
a cottage that happened to be opened only for a week. By a lucky coincidence
that week was one of our two possibilities. We are quite picky and we had
some requirements: waterfront, open view, inflatable launching possibility,
fishing, biking and running possibility, a small to medium sized cottage (it
was about us two). I couldn't believe it! The cottage answered "yes" to our
requirements. We booked it and here we were on our way to find out
that more was expecting for us.... the location has magnificent views, the
mysterious combination of water and mountain, the cottage is the coziest and
homiest we have seen, everything in the house is carefully selected and
designed throwing you gracefully back in time, and there is nothing (and we
literally mean NOTHING) that you would need and it won't be there; from all
sorts of kitchen stuff to binoculars and fishing gear; even a rowing boat!
And then, in one of the evenings we invited Dee over for a glass of wine.
The top of the surprises came when we met the nicest and friendliest
We left the place with our souls full of optimism and nostalgia promising
ourselves that we will be back and we will bring our grown up sons and their
girlfriends too.... the cottage can easily fit 6 persons.
It was for us a wonderful vacation spent in a piece of heaven...."
Have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Things we enjoyed:
The coziness of the cottage is to be experienced firsthand. Early morning coffee and tea, enjoying the spectacular view off the deck; watching the early morning fog as it lifts and the magnificent sunrise across the bay. The stillness, peacefulness and fall colors can’t be described with words. Sitting on the deck with a good glass of wine and listening to the sound of the water with an occasional fire in a great fire pit on the beach is a must. Visiting the harbor in Blue Hill to buy fresh lobsters off the boat from a very nice fisherman was a highlight for our trip to Maine. Eating them was even better.
Places we visited were Acadia, Winter Harbor, Bass Harbor, Bar Harbor, Seal Harbor, Blue Hill, Ellsworth and Schoodic Peninsula. Some of the high lights were the Harbor Porpoises along Schoodic Peninsula, the views from Cadillac Mountain Summit, The Blue Hill Wine Shop for friendly service; accepting of our dog and a great sandwich and cappuccino. Also very knowledgeable about wine. If you like to cook, visit Roaster Brother cooks store in Ellsworth. We had a wonderful time on a sunset sail with Downeast Windjammer Cruise Lines in Bar Harbor. You can bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy while enjoying the views during sunset.
Some of the best food we enjoyed we found at J M Gerrish Café, Winter Harbor, friendly, accepting of our dog and the best blueberry pie ever. Seafood Ketch, Bass Harbor, the best lobster roll and a great location with the dog. Flexit Café in Ellsworth was a nice change of pace. The Fish House Grill on the pier in Bar Harbor was very good food, good service and the best Clam Chowder. Black Dinah Chocolates purchased in Blue Hill at the Fair Winds Fresh Flower shop were exceptional. For a quick bite to eat in a very busy area such as Bar Harbor, Downeast Deli and Box Lunch Co., was a good find. On our way to Winter Harbor, we stopped in Hancock at a place called Sullivan Harbor Farms and found the best maple glazed smoked salmon ever.
If you like to knit, Shirley’s Yarns, Crafts and gifts in Hancock had a large variety of yarns, some local hand died yarns. There was also The Yarn Shop on the road to Blue Hill with only the basic’s and in the flower shop in Blue Hill (previously mentioned) had limited supply of yarn but all from Maine and hand died.
All of this, Thanks to Dee and the opportunity she gave us by opening up her peace of paradise for us to experience. Thanks again, Dee.

The cottage (and Dee) are charming! 30 minutes from Acadia for some seriously good hiking, 15 minutes from Ellsworth and Blue Hill for some small town charm. But if you can eat Lobster each day, you don't even need a car, it is less than two miles to Perry's lobster shack..... a nice walk or bike ride! We planned lots of activities but instead spent more than one day, just sitting on the rocky beach taking in the sounds, smells and views.
Don't hesitate to book this property.
This is our fifth time renting this cottage by the sea and we've already booked again for next year. What draws us back year after year is the beautiful setting. From the deck each morning we watch the sun rise over the bay and the mountains of Acadia stretched across the horizon, an ever changing display of light and color. There is a public beach two miles down the road, but we are quite content to swim at the cottage. It's 50 feet or so across the lawn to a wooden staircase leading down to the water. The beach below is rocky, but we swim there at high tide. It's very private. Inside, the cottage is decorated with art and whimsy. The cottage was clean and as described. The appliances and shower/tub are somewhat dated, and yet still charming. Dee is a wonderful host--thoughtful, welcoming, knowledgeable about the area and easily accessible. There is a smaller studio cottage on the same property. At first we were apprehensive about being close to other renters, but we've never found it to be a problem. And the last two times my sister and her husband have rented the studio so that we can have family time together and yet not be in each other's way. Our dogs love their Maine vacation as well. They have the freedom to be off leash exploring.
Although Newbery Neck is long and feels somewhat isolated (a good thing) it is centrally located for visits to our favorite places--Blue Hill, Castine, Stonington, Corea and Belfast. There's always lots to see and do, although some days we appreciate just sitting back on the deck and watching for ospreys, seals, porpoises and boats. For us it's a perfect vacation spot.
My husband and I cherished our visit! The decorum and essence of the home were hospitable and inviting. It's hard to explain but it felt as if the sunrises over the ocean and the sounds of the water, along with the beauty of the surrounding woods and the solitude therein changed our sense of time. We adventured through the countrysides antiquing and light house hunting. We visited Acadia and spent a day hiking, which was probably my favorite experience! We savored blueberry pie, and admired the art and beauty of the Blue Hill area. We left Surry with some of the mundane of life washed away by the breathtaking beauty of Down East!
My husband and I rented this beautiful cottage for the week and loved it. This was our first time in Maine and we enjoyed waking up each morning to the beautiful ocean and peaceful surroundings. . The cottage was simply adorable and is equipped with everything you need. We enjoyed going to Bar Harbor and some of the other harbor towns. One of our favorite meals was at Perry's Lobster Shack just minutes away. We had a terrific time in Maine!
From my first visit three summers ago I felt like I was coming home as I drove down the lane to this bit of paradise by the sea. Each visit has held its own wonderful gifts. The view is beyond spectacular and for me nothing beats watching the water, mountains & sky as they change throughout the day. This year's surprise was seeing a bald eagle fly over the beach twice and once over my head as I sat on the deck! Dee has created a comfortable oasis where one can step away from the bustle of life, yet have easy access to Blue Hill, Ellsworth & Acadia National Park. One of my dreams is to return to experience the area as things start to slow down with the hint of autumn in the air. Thank you Dee for sharing this home away from home!

Pets are $100 additional, each pet. They must first be approved by me, have their rabies shots and flea and tick meds, get along with other dogs and people, and not be habitual barkers. If you've stayed with me before, it's likely that I will just charge for one pet even if you bring 2. Just talk with me ahead of time? Thanks!
