Sylvan Retreat

Retreat back into time in this 1867 vintage schoolhouse. Having all the amenities of home, it is nestled in 3.5 acres of woodland and meadow. Sit on a rocker on the front porch and take in the view of the valley, or walk the trail and see nature firsthand. Kids will like their own special area in the pine grove.

The house has an open layout with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all part of a common area. Two bedrooms are off of this room, one with a large sleigh king bed, the other with a queen bed and view of the meadow. A full bath is on this first floor, as well as a laundry room. The kitchen is fully equipped, should you wish to cook.

The second floor is another large room with old-style knotty pine paneling and wall-to-wall new shag carpeting. With a built-in queen bed, single bed, and bunk beds, it sleeps 5. There is a full bath on this second floor as well. Each of the 3 bedrooms has its own TV/DVD. Has Wifi.

Although our Sylvan Retreat has a secluded feel, it is only 2 minutes from nearby Rte. 30, the gateway to such attractions as Amish Country (20 min. drive), the Gettysburg battlefield (1 hr., 20 min.), and Hershey Amusement Park (30 min). The nearby small towns of Columbia and Wrightsville lie on opposite sides of the Susquehanna River and have numerous attractions for the day traveler.

About Phil Holzinger

This property has been in the Holzinger family for 60 years. As the owner, I bought the property 2 years ago from my uncle and aunt. They initially bought the property in 1948 and had it converted from a schoolhouse into a residence.

Phil Holzinger purchased this house in 2008

Why Phil Holzinger chose Pennsylvania

I purchased this home from my uncle and aunt, who lived there for 58 years.

What makes this house unique

You are close to nature in this setting. The house is very cozy, with a fireplace and large windows to look out. The second floor 'bunk room' has new wall to wall carpeting and real knotty pine walls. A hiking trail runs through the property.

All the comforts of home!

  • 5 of 5

This home was just perfect for our family. We had two small children and 5 adults. The locations is perfect off of Rt. 30 and central to many attractions.

The little extras that Phil provides is so nice....wood for the fire pit....toilet paper, paper towels, napkins.....also some basic spices and cooking necessities.

When I return to this area I will definitely be staying here again.

The grounds around the property are beautiful and we all had such a relaxing time!

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

Very much enjoyed our stay at Sylvan Retreat. The house was cozy and loved the separate area for the kids upstairs. Having a second bathroom was also nice for getting ready in the mornings. Our teens enjoyed the garage game room and the lawn activities were fun too. Would recommend for anyone looking to stay in the area.

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there for my daughter's wedding. She got married in Lancaster County and we are from South Jersey. We were looking for a place to stay since the rehearsal was Thursday and the wedding was Saturday. This place was perfect with the upstairs loft for other family members to be able to stay with us.

An excellent vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

This was a great place to stay while visiting this part of the state. It had everything we needed for our stay and was comfortable and pleasant. It was even larger than we expected, and was beautifully decorated and furnished. The addition of the building with the foozball, pool and pinball tables was a real hit that gave everyone something extra to do while we were there. It was secluded and private and even though the weather didn't cooperate while we were there (cold and rainy) we really enjoyed the whole stay.

Charming home, great location.

  • 5 of 5

My sisters and I loved our stay here! You feel like your out in the country, yet your just minutes from everything. The house was charming and neat. We loved using the fireplace at night as we had some rainy days while we were there. Would have loved to explore more outside, but the rain kind of deterred us.....next time! Would definitely go back!

Wonderful, special, magic

  • 5 of 5

We just loved Sylvan Retreat. My son and daughter-in-law and two grandkids had their own special getaway on the second floor and we had our comfy quiet bedroom and bath down. More than enough room for a few families. The open living area was so sunny and comfortable that just hanging out was fine, although we had a blast playing on the grounds, having treasure hunts and nature walks. We really enjoyed the guided tour of the nearby Indian Caves.

Great place and want to come back.
