House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 9)
Retreat back into time in this 1867 vintage schoolhouse. Having all the amenities of home, it is nestled in 3.5 acres of woodland and meadow. Sit on a rocker on the front porch and take in the view of the valley, or walk the trail and see nature firsthand. Kids will like their own special area in the pine grove.
The house has an open layout with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all part of a common area. Two bedrooms are off of this room, one with a large sleigh king bed, the other with a queen bed and view of the meadow. A full bath is on this first floor, as well as a laundry room. The kitchen is fully equipped, should you wish to cook.
The second floor is another large room with old-style knotty pine paneling and wall-to-wall new shag carpeting. With a built-in queen bed, single bed, and bunk beds, it sleeps 5. There is a full bath on this second floor as well. Each of the 3 bedrooms has its own TV/DVD. Has Wifi.
Although our Sylvan Retreat has a secluded feel, it is only 2 minutes from nearby Rte. 30, the gateway to such attractions as Amish Country (20 min. drive), the Gettysburg battlefield (1 hr., 20 min.), and Hershey Amusement Park (30 min). The nearby small towns of Columbia and Wrightsville lie on opposite sides of the Susquehanna River and have numerous attractions for the day traveler.

About Phil Holzinger
This property has been in the Holzinger family for 60 years. As the owner, I bought the property 2 years ago from my uncle and aunt. They initially bought the property in 1948 and had it converted from a schoolhouse into a residence.
Phil Holzinger purchased this House in 2008
Why Phil Holzinger chose Columbia
I purchased this home from my uncle and aunt, who lived there for 58 years.
What makes this House unique
You are close to nature in this setting. The house is very cozy, with a fireplace and large windows to look out. The second floor 'bunk room' has new wall to wall carpeting and real knotty pine walls. A hiking trail runs through the property.

Great Home for our family!
We really loved staying here! It had everything we needed and more. Our kids spent hours exploring the outdoors/nature. We had the fireplace going at night and made multiple meals in the kitchen. It was a perfect house for our family (plus Nana) with plenty of room to spread out! Thanks Phil!
A perfect weekend retreat where we were close to everything but felt secluded in the mountains!
This was the perfect weekend staycation to celebrate my 40th birthday with family one night and then friends the next. Everyone was impressed by the seclusion, the property, the charm and the space.
My boys and nieces were excited about it being so kid friendly and the next night my girlfriends were all excited about being kid free! We all talked about going back in the summer and even for holidays with extended family.
Still can't get over what a hidden gem we found!
Wonderful Weekend Away.
We were so thankful to stumble across this property whilst looking for somewhere new to explore for a long weekend away March 9th to 11th. This home truly is a retreat. We took a day trip to the Railroad Museum / Lancaster, and Hershey was only a half hour drive, we had fun, but loved coming back at the end of the day and resting in this cozy home with the gorgeous views. We would love to visit again, and would recommend staying here. Would be nice to explore outside in Summer or Autumn when the grounds are filled in more, but still had a nice little hike with our three boys in the mild Winter weather.
Homey, Bright & Roomy!
This rental is a keeper! Started our 1st Annual Ladies Thrift Store Marathon weekend on Friday night with a warm & cozy fire. Lots of room to share & be together. All the windows in the dining & livingroom bring so much light into the gathering area. Phil the owner was so very generous and accommodating! With an impending storm approaching, sent emails & updates ( even offered for us to cancel & refunding our money!!) Wow! Can't say enough nice things about this schoolhouse home & Phil. Each one of us ladies are so excited & looking forward to returning back next year for our 2nd Annual getaway at the Sylvan Retreat. Donna (Atco, NJ)
Charming, Cozy, & Spacious
This was our 2nd stay at the School House. We the the wonderful feel of this house! It’s great how the kids can spread out in the huge upstairs (with its own bathroom) & still plenty of privacy with (2) bedrooms on the main floor. Only thing that could make our stay better is if the internet was working - using your own data the service is awful & the weather was bad both times we went. This made me sad bc the property is so nice would of loved to enjoy some outdoor time!
Have to say Phil (owner) is great to work with. He came to house to assist us with internet when I called him. Unfortunately it was the cable company & nothing he could do to assist us at the house. He did however stop at a local Hotel & get permission for my husband to go there for interenet to do his school prep.
Comcast was in the midst of switching to a new modem for the internet. The internet is now working fine.
Wonderful home and great location.
This was our 2nd stay at Sylvan Retreat. We came with friends for an archery event at Spooky Nook. Friends were asking in August if I could rent this home again. It has plenty of space and is just unique. The owner Phil came to welcome us and even helped us unload. We definately would return again.
River attractions in nearby Columbia and Wrightsville. Dutch Wonderland is a 20 minute drive away. Hershey Park is a 40 minute drive. Gettysburg battlefield is about an hour's drive.
