Sylvan Retreat

Retreat back into time in this 1867 vintage schoolhouse. Having all the amenities of home, it is nestled in 3.5 acres of woodland and meadow. Sit on a rocker on the front porch and take in the view of the valley, or walk the trail and see nature firsthand. Kids will like their own special area in the pine grove.

The house has an open layout with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all part of a common area. Two bedrooms are off of this room, one with a large sleigh king bed, the other with a queen bed and view of the meadow. A full bath is on this first floor, as well as a laundry room. The kitchen is fully equipped, should you wish to cook.

The second floor is another large room with old-style knotty pine paneling and wall-to-wall new shag carpeting. With a built-in queen bed, single bed, and bunk beds, it sleeps 5. There is a full bath on this second floor as well. Each of the 3 bedrooms has its own TV/DVD. Has Wifi.

Although our Sylvan Retreat has a secluded feel, it is only 2 minutes from nearby Rte. 30, the gateway to such attractions as Amish Country (20 min. drive), the Gettysburg battlefield (1 hr., 20 min.), and Hershey Amusement Park (30 min). The nearby small towns of Columbia and Wrightsville lie on opposite sides of the Susquehanna River and have numerous attractions for the day traveler.

About Phil Holzinger

This property has been in the Holzinger family for 60 years. As the owner, I bought the property 2 years ago from my uncle and aunt. They initially bought the property in 1948 and had it converted from a schoolhouse into a residence.

Phil Holzinger purchased this house in 2008

Why Phil Holzinger chose Columbia

I purchased this home from my uncle and aunt, who lived there for 58 years.

What makes this house unique

You are close to nature in this setting. The house is very cozy, with a fireplace and large windows to look out. The second floor 'bunk room' has new wall to wall carpeting and real knotty pine walls. A hiking trail runs through the property.

Fully Equipped Winter Wonderland

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our 2nd stay at the Sylvan Retreat. We actually got to meet Phil and he was so gracious and very helpful when it started to snow by giving us instructions on how to find the shovels and salt (sorry Phil, we had over zealous southerners in our family that are not used to snow so they used all the salt). The fireplace was the meeting spot every night for the whole gang. The kids loved the swingset in the snow and the husbands loved the game room (they just wished there was a space heater out there for the winter so they could play longer). I loved cooking in the kitchen while gazing out the beautiful windows at the snow while the husbands enjoyed being grill masters in the snow. Multiple TVs and Wifi kept the older kids entertained, while there was more than enough room in the kids suite upstairs for them to spread out. Everything was provided which was great when traveling with such a big family. We ventured out to cool day trips since we were so close to 30. The Turkey Hill Experiment (loved making our own ice cream lab) , Kitchen Kettle Village (the kids got to decorate cookies and shop), the Crayola Experience (never knew crayons could be so much fun), Lapp Valley Farms (had to love eating fresh ice cream while watching the cows getting milked), and Hershey Park/Chocolate World (the lights were beautiful and the chocolate was loved by everyone) made our vacation a hit. We can't wait to come back and stay at your inviting home again.

All the comforts of home!

  • 5 of 5

Sylvan Retreat was a little paradise! We stayed there with our son, daughter-in-law, and 5 grandchildren. The grandchildren couldn’t wait to get up and get outside to play and explore! The kitchen was very well stocked with plenty dishes, pots and pans, etc. We also enjoyed the fireplace. We will definitely be staying here again if we ever travel back to this area again. Thank you, Phil!

Fond Memories at Sylvan Retreat-Columbia PA

  • 5 of 5

Sylvan Retreat was fantastic--enjoyed reading about the history of the schoolhouse & taking in its charm!

There were 5 Women in our group attending a conference in Lancaster. We took additional time for sightseeing---Philadelphia, Washington DC, Hershey & Lancaster area. Amazing how close these cities were--great short drive!

Thank You Phil for sharing your home with us!
