Columbia House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

Sylvan Retreat

Retreat back into time in this 1867 vintage schoolhouse. Having all the amenities of home, it is nestled in 3.5 acres of woodland and meadow. Sit on a rocker on the front porch and take in the view of the valley, or walk the trail and see nature firsthand. Kids will like their own special area in the pine grove.

The house has an open layout with the living room, dining room, and kitchen all part of a common area. Two bedrooms are off of this room, one with a large sleigh king bed, the other with a queen bed and view of the meadow. A full bath is on this first floor, as well as a laundry room. The kitchen is fully equipped, should you wish to cook.

The second floor is another large room with old-style knotty pine paneling and wall-to-wall new shag carpeting. With a built-in queen bed, single bed, and bunk beds, it sleeps 5. There is a full bath on this second floor as well. Each of the 3 bedrooms has its own TV/DVD. Has Wifi.

Although our Sylvan Retreat has a secluded feel, it is only 2 minutes from nearby Rte. 30, the gateway to such attractions as Amish Country (20 min. drive), the Gettysburg battlefield (1 hr., 20 min.), and Hershey Amusement Park (30 min). The nearby small towns of Columbia and Wrightsville lie on opposite sides of the Susquehanna River and have numerous attractions for the day traveler.

About Phil Holzinger

This property has been in the Holzinger family for 60 years. As the owner, I bought the property 2 years ago from my uncle and aunt. They initially bought the property in 1948 and had it converted from a schoolhouse into a residence.

Phil Holzinger purchased this house in 2008

Why Phil Holzinger chose Pennsylvania

I purchased this home from my uncle and aunt, who lived there for 58 years.

What makes this house unique

You are close to nature in this setting. The house is very cozy, with a fireplace and large windows to look out. The second floor 'bunk room' has new wall to wall carpeting and real knotty pine walls. A hiking trail runs through the property.

Family Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We came to the area to visit family and to celebrate my fathers birthday. This charming home was everything we needed and more. The home was large enough to accommodate 8 adults comfortably. You are close enough to stores and necessities that it is convenient but once you pull up the driveway it really feels so special and isolated. It really was a unique find. My only regret is that the weather was a little chilly and we didn't get to spend much time outdoors. There is a small nature trail, a badmitton court and a converted garage located across the driveway with a pool table, fooseball and table tennis. Had the weather been warmer, we definitely would have taken advantage of it more. I guess it is just a perfect opportunity to come back next summer!

Beautiful Getaway close enough to everything, far away enough from everything.

  • 5 of 5

We would highly recommend staying at Sylvan Retreat! If we knew it was going to be this wonderful we would have stayed longer! It is off of a main road yet still hidden from all other houses and insulated from any noise. The property is beautiful with many different types of trees and plants. Phil is such a thoughtful host, the house was beautifully stocked, as if we had a concierge! We are looking forward to coming back! This was a feast for the soul!

Nice quaint, historical old school house that is hidden in a grove of trees.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were traveling (leaf peeping) and needed an a non-motel for two night so we could explore Gettysburg and Lancaster County from one location. This place has all the conveniences and near a supermarket but secluded by a grove of trees. It would also be great for a family with children. Nice find. Thanks Phil.

Our new favorite place!

  • 5 of 5

We mostly stay at cabins in the Shenandoah valley, but we thought we would try Lancaster Co. this year. Wow! This place was fabulous! The home itself is very unique and comfortable. All the things you need are provided and the location is perfect. It feels like you are deep in the woods. Our kids loved the place, especially the upper level. We will definitely be coming back!

Quaint and Cozy!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the little school house with a total of 4 adults and 4 little toddlers, yet there seemed to be room to spare. Phil was so accomodating and helpful! The place had all the amenities and a bonus game room with ping pong, pool, and foos ball. Great place, great people!

Schoolhouse Charm!

  • 5 of 5

So charming! It is not always easy to travel with four toddlers, but this old schoolhouse was designed to accommodate children, and the bigger kids responsible for them! The upstairs bunking area made a great "playroom" and there is even a big kid playroom in the detached garage with pool, foosball, and ping pong. Phil was so helpful and the property had all the amenities. It is only twenty minutes to Dutch Wonderland and Amish country. Can't wait to come back!
