2-Bedroom Apt in Historic Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca in hill town of Bettona

Bedrooms 2
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Apartment, 2 Bedrooms + Attached Unit, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-10)

Located in the historic center of Bettona, a small hill town 15k south of both Assisi and Perugia, with easy access to the E45.

Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca is run by a Week in Umbria and offers the quintessential Slow Travel vacation — a week (that is not to say you can’t stay for 3 days or a month for that matter) in a small town where you can settle in and relax, enjoy a good meal or stroll to the bar for a cappuccino. AND your stay at the beautifully restored and furnished Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca is the perfect base from which to discover Umbria.

The historic palazzo may date from the 16th century and was the home of the Fiumi. (St. Clare's mother was a Fiumi.) The nobile family was one of the largest landowners in the area and one of their principle activities was growing olives. To this day Bettona is surrounded by olive groves that once belonged to the family. In fact, the house contained an olive mill and three presses as well as a stable on its ground floor when I purchased it. Cologero Fiumi, the last count to live in the palazzo, died in 1963 and the house had fallen into ruins by the time I discovered it in 2005. It has been great to breathe life back into this wonderful place.

I am your host and live on the piano nobile so please don't hesitate to ask for help when you are here.

I think one of the things that is special about staying with me is to experience the rhythm of life in a small town. With only 350 people living within our walls, Bettona is the perfect get-away from larger more ‘discovered’ hill towns. The people are friendly, the streets quaint, and the views spectacular. Guests often comment on how our little town works its charms on them. Yet, there’s always something to do — from strolling to the central piazza for a coffee or gelato to dining in one of our lovely restaurants. In the summer there are often concerts or dance performances within the walls. Trips to some of the nearby towns offer all the cultural and art experiences you'd expect without the crowds and at a particularly Umbrian pace.

The apartment is on the top floor of the palazzo and called 'Assisi' because there are views out over the Spoleto Valley toward Assisi. It has its own entrance and contains two bedrooms, a bathroom, full kitchen with marble counters, dining area, and living room. The furniture is a mixture of antique or in the Mission Style and goes beautifully with the rustic stone walls beneath the white washed beamed ceilings. There are wonderful breezes and the apartment is air conditioned as well. A small terrace is just perfect for sitting in the sun and relaxing.

A special welcome goes out to the LGBT community. Know that you are extremely welcome to discover Umbria and come back to relax in the comfort of my home.

As your host, I am happy to help with recommendations on what to see, how to get there, or great places to eat. If you are interested in cooking lessons — for a day or week or just to learn how to make gnocchi or fresh pasta — we are happy to accommodate you.

COOKING LESSONS: A special cooking lesson package with professional chef is also available. Package costs 2250 euros and includes: accommodations at Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca; five 3-hour lessons followed by a 5-course lunch. Lessons are taught by Chef Andrea Sposini and take place at his cooking school in Perugia.

TOURS: Make that wedding trip, special birthday, or a much deserved week away with friends or family, even more extraordinary with a customized tour package. Full or half day tours available. a Week in Umbria will help you explore Umbria at a relaxed pace and treat you to a sampling of what this wonderful region has to offer. Special tours of The Saints of Umbria, with special attention to St. Francis of Assisi (San Francesco di Assisi) is offered for a minimum of 4 people. Flexible itineraries allow you to customize your vacation or you can simply spend a week here discovering Umbria on your own.

Oh, I almost forgot, if you'd like home cooked meals, I'd be happy to accommodate you no matter what your dietary needs are. Most guests choose to have a meal prepared the first night of their stay here. It gives us a chance to get to know each other a bit and to talk about what you'd like to see in Umbria. (Coast is 25euro per person and includes wine.)

SPECIAL PARTIES: Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca has a beautiful cantina and dining hall on the ground floor which is perfect for special events. Cocktails and Buffet to sit down banquets are available.

About Michael LaPlaca

Sometimes you find a project that changes your life completely. Restoring this palazzo did just that for me. After 3 years of restoration, the palazzo is filled with life and functioning as something more than just a B&B. Living in the small town of Bettona has also been a revelation for me. We've been welcomed into a community of warm and friendly people where there is always something to do. The dogs and I couldn't be happier sharing our piece of Italy with you.

Michael LaPlaca purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Michael LaPlaca chose Umbria

People always ask 'Why Bettona?' It was all about the palazzo, the adventure of saving a piece of history, and returning the house to its former grandeur. And living in the historic center of a small hill town has allowed us to put down some roots and get to know the people of Bettona.

What makes this apartment unique

Really, the town of Bettona is perfectly situated as a base for exploring Umbria. It's 20 minutes to Perugia or Assisi, 30 to Todi or Spello, 40 to Spoleto, 45 minutes to Gubbio, and an hour to Orvieto. The palazzo is beautifully restored and furnished with a mix of antiques and mission furniture, comfortable beds, kitchens with marble counters, and great views of the Spoleto Valley. It's such a pleasure staying here that some guests just like to kick back and relax at home. And you get to have me as your host. I'll offer help in any way I can — from suggestions on what towns to visit, what restaurants to go to, wineries to enjoy, local festivals are happening, or even renting a car or making reservations for the next leg of your adventure. I'm here to help with whatever you need. If you'd like cooking lessons, I can arrange to have a fantastic chef come and teach your group or I can teach you how to make gnocchi, fresh pasta, or something else using our local ingredients. And, if you'd just like a home cooked meal, I'd be happy to prepare one for you. My job is to make your experience as wonderful as possible.

Staying in Bettona was the highlight of our European trip!

  • 5 of 5

If you'd like to stay in a beautifully decorated B&B with a host who goes overboard to make sure you experience the best in the Italian countryside, this is your place.

The palazzo is charming--beautifully decorated, roomy, and our view overlooked the rooftops of Bettona. I was able to sit on a shaded balcony and see the neighbors caring for their flowers below. In the morning we'd stroll to the central piazza for a breakfast bite and cappuccini. Life slowed down wonderfully for us in Bettona.

To get us started, Michael took us to his favorite towns, helping us with logistics of driving, parking, etc., and then showing us fantastic churches with astounding artwork, great shops, and wonderful restaurants. It was all so special. After being in Umbria, I honestly wasn't that taken with Rome. Seeing artwork so intimately in Umbria was so much more special. When we said we were ready to browse on our own, Michael gave us advice and turned us loose. Just be sure to get a GPS with your rental car!

Michael cooked for us on our first night and turned my daughters into truffle fanatics. And I'll never make bad garlic bread again. My stomach is growling, just thinking about sitting in his kitchen sipping wine and nibbling on everything he kept providing. It was so much fun.

We stayed in Bettona during the Sagra, and had a total blast. Michael made sure we were comfortable and provided for. Residents of the town came to meet us. My only regret is not getting out on the dance floor.

Staying here was the highlight of our month-long trip. Thank you so much, Michael! We can't wait to return!

The best of just about everything

  • 5 of 5

Did you ever wish you had this really cool friend who lived in Italy—in a beautiful palazzo in a charming hilltown—who just loved having guests? Well, you do. Michael La Placa calls his establishment a “Bed and Breakfast”, but it is so much more, and so much better. His palazzo, built in the 17th century, has been lovingly and tastefully restored by Michael himself. It retains all of its old world charm, but is extremely comfortable, with great bathrooms and amenities. It is located in the small and endlessly picturesque town of Bettona, a stone’s throw from Assisi and Perugia. I have been three times in a row during the summer. If you want to be on your own, that’s fine, but Michael is most willing to be your guide to the wonders of Umbria, which he knows extremely well. In addition to the obvious tourist spots, like Assisi, he’s shown me wonderful off-the-beaten-track spots, like the Church of San Franceso in the village of Montefalco, with marvelous Renaissance frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli. (We were the only ones in the church!) You will take back wonderful memories and be eager to return often.

Memorable, fun & delicious!

  • 5 of 5

These would be just the highlights to describe our visit to Palazzo Fiumi-LaPlaca. My husband, 4-year-old and I had a lovely experience and some amazing meals with (and cooked by) Michael in his beautifully restored palazzo. My husband & I felt like we'd stepped into a story-book and our son loved all the room to explore! The accommodations are pleasing to the eye, but also relaxing. The town is very quaint, and Michael is the perfect host. You will come to feel like a local in no time at all! Don't forget to grab Michael for some local sightseeing outside of Bettona as well (esp. in Assisi); he's got a great eye and will help put everything in perspective, both geographically & historically. Enjoy!

Palazzo Fiumi LaPlaca is Incredible

  • 5 of 5

Palazzo Fiumi La Placa was absolutely incredible! The apartment was immaculate and filled with tasteful yet, very comfortable and beautiful Italian antiques. Bettona is a lovely town with a delicious Osteria close by; a must eat. It is close to Assisi and other wonderful Umbrian towns allowing ease of visiting the magnificent Umbrian countryside. Michael was wonderful to work with and made our stay delightful, comfortable and easy. Key pickup and service while we stayed there was top notch. We spent a fabulous week exploring this amazing part of the world and relaxing in a beautiful home. I would HIGHLY recommend this vacation rental to anyone looking for a fantastic holiday in Italy.

Charm+charm+ more charm!!

Under the entertainingly caustic directions of the owner we were able to visit the region as a well seasoned traveler or returning friend might. The Palazzo was a delight and the town very welcoming.

A wonderful week in Umbria

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent a delightful week here in July 2011. The restored house is beautiful, and the top floor apartment is spacious, comfortable, quiet, and authentic. Open the shutters and windows to look across the valley to Assisi in the distance. Michael's hospitality was great; he cooked us dinner on the night we arrived, and offered restaurant and sightseeing tips that set up and sustained our week.

Bettona is a perfect spot from which to explore Umbria. We began each morning with a cappuccino in the charming square of this little walled hilltop hamlet, then set off on a day trip to one of the easily reachable surrounding towns. Lunch out, back for a nap, and then to another town for dinner. What a great way to live.
