When coming to Charleston, South Carolina, why stay in a bed and breakfast, historic inn, or hotel when you can rent your own historic vacation rental home for the same price? This elegant and superbly refurbished historic guest home in an exclusive neighborhood of historic downtown Charleston is available by the night or week. Like a Charleston inn or historic bed and breakfast but more private, the 200 year old two bedroom guest home is on an acre in a quiet, but centrally located residential street in the historic district of downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The Charlotte Street Cottage makes for the perfect vacation rental accommodations for your visit to South Carolina.

Secluded and romantic, Charlotte Street Cottage, is the original kitchen house built in 1820. The Cottage is a beautifully restored, two bedroom guesthouse offering the perfect combination of privacy, quiet luxury, and easy access to our beautiful historic city. Rise with the sun and go for a jog along the battery or relax on your sunny patio with a hot cup of coffee and fresh fruit and enjoy the flowers in the gardens. Hop on your bike and be instantly surrounded by the history and charm of the antebellum neighborhood.

Charlotte Street home is a historic home built in 1820 and known as the Wegman-Holmes house. It is set back from the street behind a brick and ironwork fence on an acre of private gardens. Charlotte Street Cottage is rented as one unit and can accommodate up to four people. The property is beautifully landscaped with natural areas, stone patios, young fruit trees, flower beds, 200 year old oaks, and a large lawn. There is secure complimentary parking behind an electric gate. The house is in an ideal location on a beautiful wide street lined with 150 year old oak trees in the heart of the historic district.

Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a new top of the line queen bed, the other with new twin beds. There is a full bath, generous closet space, and a washer and dryer. Both bedrooms look out over the gardens. Downstairs features include a kitchen with the original fireplace, breakfast nook, living room, and half bath. The kitchen is fully-equipped with stove and oven, full-sized refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, blender, and all the cookware and utensils you could want. The dining/living area is stylish yet comfortably furnished. There is premium cable HDTV, high speed wireless internet, and two zone central heat and air for year round comfort. Fax service is available. Next to the cottage, out the kitchen entrance, is your own private garden and patio, fringed by flowerbeds and with comfortable patio furniture.

From your home on Charlotte Street you can easily walk or ride the trolley to all that Charleston's historic district has to offer. This includes the visitor's center, the old market, the new library and aquarium, the Aiken-Rhett house, the harbor and all Charleston museums. Within a few blocks there are many excellent restaurants, shops, galleries, and of course, fine historic homes of which many are open to the public for the numerous house and garden tours.

Within a five to 15 minute drive are hiking, kayaking, white sandy ocean beaches, horseback riding, and yacht harbors. The area is renowned for its many fine golf courses. In the event of any special health needs, there are three modern medical centers within several blocks. Downtown Charleston is 15 minutes from Charleston International Airport. A private taxi to our door costs approximately $25, or airport shuttles will also give door-to-door service for $13 per person. We are a five hour drive from Atlanta, two hours from Savannah, three and a half from Charlotte, and one hour from Beaufort, South Carolina.

About Lisa or Geoff

We are two medical professionals. We moved to Charleston form California in the late 90's to experience the culture in another part of the country....and a slower pace.

Lisa or Geoff purchased this house in 1998

Why Lisa or Geoff chose Charleston

We fell in love with our home because of the architectural detail and history. Both the kitchen house (now Charlotte Street Cottage) and the main house (where we live) were built in 1820-21.

The property also has beautiful grounds (1/2 acre of gardens), is on one of the most beautiful tree lined streets in the historic district with year round residents. We are just outside of the main touristy area...but within a few blocks walk to everything.

What makes this house unique

We tend to get guests who don't want 'just a place to sleep' but are looking for somewhere where they can enjoy each others company in a beautiful setting.

LOVELY COTTAGE = WONDERFUL STAY!

  • 5 of 5

Our first visit to Charleston was made all-the-more special by our stay at Charlotte Street Cottage.

Located on historic Charlotte Street, within walking distance of many of the wonderful highlights of Charleston, The Cottage sits alongside the magnificent home of the lovely owners, Lisa & Geoff, on beautifully tended and secluded grounds, accessed through an automatic gate. Just pulling into the property made us instantly feel special (though we walked everywhere and hardly used our car).

The cottage -- with fully equipped kitchen, cozy seating areas (both inside and outside on the patio), WiFi, TV, AC/Heat and two bedrooms -- made our family of four, plus well-behaved dog, feel very much at home. The special “welcome” goodies of snacks, basic staples, and wine left by the owners was a lovely touch. Coming back to The Cottage after a long day of sightseeing, and being able to enjoy some wine and snacks in the garden or in the living room was such a treat and luxury (and not easily done in a hotel room). It was a relaxing place to retreat, recharge and get ourselves ready for our numerous excursions around town. After staying here we could not imagine staying at a hotel in Charleston -- our experience and vacation was made all the more special, authentic and relaxing because of this lovely property.

We hope to have the chance to visit Charleston again soon, and we certainly hope when we do that the Charlotte Street Cottage will be available for us to stay again!

Thank you to Lisa & Geoff for making our stay so memorable.

This is a charming cottage and the owner was so kind and accommodating.

Because this property has only one full bath (and a small one at that) it is really better suited to a couple or a couple with small children. In fairness I rented it for myself and my adult son and his fiancé without realizing there was only one full bath. We were there for a wedding and had to prepare for several events. It was too difficult so I took a hotel room for myself and let the kids enjoy it ~ which they very much did! Great attention to making guests feel comfortable!

Owner's Response: Dear Maureen, With all due respect, I phoned you as I do all our guests after confirming a booking. The purpose of my calls are to answer any questions, go over details, etc...to make sure you are familiar with Charlotte Street Cottage what is provided and you are happy. During our phone conversation, you told me that your son's fiance did the research and "booked" Charlotte Street Cottage, as you were away. At that time we discussed the number of bathrooms and you told me you would have preferred two bathrooms but you would look at our listing with pictures, and get back to me if it was a problem. The only response I got was that you were looking forward to your stay with us. Also, when I checked with you during your stay, and with your son when he requested and was given a late check out, everything was "wonderful". Therefore, I do feel it is disingenuous for you to claim dissatisfaction after the fact and when you knew exactly what you were getting. We have been in business for 20 years and often have parties of four guests say with us and have never had a complaint about the number or size of bathrooms. Lisa Flaggman Charlotte Street Cottage

Spring time in Charleston.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Charlotte St. cottage for one week during the 2017 Spring Home Tours. Perfect location for walking anywhere. The cottage is perfect. Lisa has stocked it with the best of everything. I went to the grocery store before we checked in and discovered that she had put a welcome basket in the kitchen with snacks, cantaloupe, and bananas. There was a bottle of wine, a few sodas and water (sparkling and still) in the fridge.

The furnishings and beds are comfortable. Decor is wonderful. We really enjoyed the full linen closet. Most places give you two towels per guest. Lisa supplies you with a closet full of towels and bath matts.

I could go on about the cottage. But the real treat is the property. We had cocktails every evening and coffee every morning in the courtyard. We even sat on the porch of the big house one afternoon and had a beer. Our hosts were very accommodating and very sweet.

We felt right at home. And best of all we were able to bring our dog, Clayton. Nothing beats traveling with your best friend.

We would definitely stay here again. Maybe Christmas? Charleston at Christmas-the best.
