Why David chose Horiikecho
After more than 20 years living in a number of different parts of Kyoto, Yoshiko and I have found the Higashiyama area to be our home. It is a truly classic old style Japanese neighborhood of old wooden houses, family run restaurants and shops, temples, shrines and historic sites. It retains its traditional flavor and is blessed with proximity to the green hills and peaceful waterways which grace the eastern sector of Kyoto. Women in Kimono and monks from nearby temples chanting for alms are still common sights in the narrow lanes of Higashiyama. We have tried to make the house a part of this serene and traditional area and hope to share its unique beauty with our guests.
What makes this House unique
After many years living in the Higashiyama district, Yoshiko and I were very fortunate to find this beautiful house, just around the corner from us. The restoration was done by local traditional craftsmen, temple carpenters and an architect experienced in seamlessly and discreetly blending traditional style with modern amenities. Yoshiko and I have decorated the house with the best from our over 20 years of collecting at Kyoto's temple antiques markets. As we are living just one minute away, one or both of us is always available should you have any questions or requests. A comprehensive and updated guide to restaurants in the area is provided in the house and we are happy to make reservations for you. This house is our only rental property, so all our attention and care are reserved for the house and our guests. The unique and serene beauty of the house and its location, combined with personal attention when requested, make this classic house, the ideal choice for your visit to this lovely city.

The real Kyoto
What a beautiful house located in a neighborhood you see in travel magazines. David was helpful with our reservation from the time we booked and through our stay. The location is away from other tourists but still convenient to the subway and Heian shrine. We ate at a restaurant located a minute away based on a handmade guide in the Koto Inn and were treated to delicious food and wonderful service.
Thank you for taking care of our family!
Excellent location on narrow traditional pedestrian street
For Americans it took some getting used to the Japanese style accommodation, but it was good training for our hike on the Nakasendo trail. The restoration was very well done and everything works well.. There is a gas stove in the kitchen that does not work which would make preparing elaborate meals difficult, but there are so many good restaurants that it is better to eat out anyway. There is a very functional small refrigerator for breakfast things.
Great Machiya .great hosts. Great local experience. It is a real Kyoto lifestyle. would get back.
We had a great local stayat Koto In. Everything eas perfect. I already miss the Machiya and the local atmosphere. It really f
made us feel locals. Highly recommended
A lovely house in a great location
Our fantastic stay in Kyoto was helped by the excellent weather and gorgeous sakura, but it was make comfortable, easy and very memorable by the facilities, atmosphere and convenient location of Koto Inn. From being met at the subway to being wished well on our journey we had a great experience.
Our new favorite place to stay in Kyoto
Over the years we've staying in a number of iconic Kyoto inns and hotels, but Koto Inn is, by far, our favorite. Would almost prefer to keep it a secret (though clearly it's too late for that now anyway ;-), as we were able to snag only two nights several months in advance. Highly recommended if you can get a reservation.
Koto Inn a great choice for a couple, two couples or four friends
We just spent 10 days at the Koto Inn. It is a lovely restored historical Japanese townhouse. It is beautifully furnished and the futons are great. I think that this is a perfect accommodation for a couple. If you have good friends, then this would also work. We traveled with another couple. The master bedroom is a nice size, but the second bedroom is much smaller. If you are traveling with friends or another couple, you might want to discuss or flip a coin for who gets the larger room.
There is a well appointed kitchen and a fridge. The toilet is amazing and the bath is really wonderful. After a day of hiking, it is so nice to come back to a bath! They also have a washer/dryer which is such a nice perk.
David checks in on you and helps with any questions you might have. I thought the service was exceptional.
As far as location goes, I don't think you could ask for a better placed house. It is right in the middle of the Higashiyama district and super close to so many of the places you want to be. It is also very close to the subway and some great temples and gardens.
We were all very happy about our stay. If there was one thing we could change, it would be the check out time, which is at 10 am. Most places have it at 11 am. But that is a very minor item for a lovely townhouse with great service and a wonderful location. I highly recommend staying there. And the day we were leaving was also a very busy day for them with travels of their own. So, it may usually be at 11, but for that day it needed to be at 10.
