Far Far Away is a Canada Select 4 Star guesthouse located directly between Chester and Mahone Bay; a ten minute drive in either direction and 25 minutes to the UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenburg. The guesthouse shares a driveway with an early 1900s home and has oodles of privacy in the backyard.
The guesthouse is quaint and suited ideally for a couple but can sleep three with a day bed in the spare room off the kitchen that serves as an office or second bedroom (this room has no closing door). The space is open concept with dark wood floors throughout and a contemporary colour palette of greys and white. The bathroom is modern and clean offering a stand up shower and complimentary bath products. Off the kitchen is a french door that leads to the backyard and large patio complete with outside furniture and BBQ. With the help of foliage and fencing the backyard offers a lot of privacy and gets all the morning and early afternoon sun — perfect for enjoying a first cup of coffee or morning yoga.
The guesthouse is furnished with original artwork by Barbara McLean.
Wifi is available on site as well as cable TV and DVD player. The kitchen is complete with fridge, stove, microwave, toaster, kettle, coffee maker, stove top espresso maker (locally roasted Fair Trade coffee is provided) and all the necessities for making a meal. Bedding, linens, beach towels, hair dryer, toilet tissue, hand soap, iron and ironing board are all available. If you are wondering about specific items, it’s best to ask when booking. Laundry services are available on the property.
Far Far Away is no mansion but sure to win you over.
The property directly connects to the provincial Rails to Trails hiking/cycling trail — two mountain bikes are provided.
The surrounding areas offer, live theatre, sailing, flea markets, whale watching tours, sea kayaking tours, white sand beaches, various farmers markets, horse and carriage rides, cafes, pubs, art galleries, golfing, spas (just 30 seconds to Oak Island Resort), and even on-site private wine tastings.

I'm self-employed and highly motivated. With various business ventures on the go, there are too many things in life yet to try that sitting idle doesn't make sense to me. That being said I do know how to relax! As much as I love exploring, I love retreating to country living and I'm determined to make it work. It just so happens that the South Shore (my home) is one of the most beautiful areas in Nova Scotia. Opening a guesthouse has been an item on my Life's To Do List for awhile and 2010 seemed like a natural progression for it. So here we go...
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2006
This property once belonged to my Great Grandparents who moved from the West coast in the early 1900s. There is a rich history and connectedness here and as often as I try to leave it always calls me home.
It is quiet. The rural community of Martin's Point is peaceful and usually a few degrees warmer than our neighbouring towns. Living between Mahone Bay and Chester make it easy and fast to visit either depending on what you are in the mood for. Chester offers a live theater festival all summer long, several cafes and unique boutiques — even an organic market. Mahone Bay has art galleries, a cheesecake gallery (wide selection of art and cheesecakes), flea markets, antiques and once you're there it's only a few more minutes to Lunenburg. Each town offers amazing dinning options and there is usually live music to be found somewhere. Lunenburg also offers whale watching, chartered sailing tours, museums, shopping etc. This area seriously is the place to be in the summer!
We had such a great weekend at Far Far Away! It's so close to everything in the area and yet when you are there, it's like a little oasis "far far away" from everything! The place was very tastefully decorated and had everything we needed. The welcome package was full of wine, espresso and other treats.
We highly recommend booking your vacation here, we're planning to come back in September!
Far Far Away Guesthouse is comfortable, cozy and uniquely styled- we enjoyed the decor and artwork. Jay was sweet to leave us a card and bottle of wine as I mentioned it was our anniversary. He was easy to communicate with, very laid back, and overall the perfect host.
The cottage is well stocked with extras and some basic food supplies- coffee, sugar, etc, so there is very little one would need to run to the store to get. Close to Mahone Bay (Mug & Anchor restaurant, Jennifer's Bakery are MUSTS) and Chester Basin, (The Galley was wonderful/romantic). The Chester Connector trail goes over the Gold River and along the old train route- we found the area breathtaking. The beauty of this spot is it's out-of-the-way location, while being close to everything one comes to Nova Scotia to see.
Caveats: The bathroom is quite cramped, but we managed. The water pump was so loud I didn't wish to flush the toilet or take an early morning shower because I didn't wish to awaken my partner. But I wouldn't hestitate to come back to visit again- I'd just bring earplugs for my honey.
It fit with our style of traveling- a base camp for our explorations. It's less than an hour from Ross Farm Museum up Route 12, Martock (OnTree Park) up route 14 and Halifax, up highway 103.
Our stay at the Far Far Away Guesthouse was fantastic! It was home for four nights and we were quite happy with every minute. The listing description was extremely accurate, including the photos. It's as cute and cozy as it looks and very convenient for location. My dad golfed to his heart's content while I hit the beach and nearby Lunenburg. The amenities were exceptional and helped to make our stay even more comfortable! I hadn't ridden a bike for a very long time, but being close to the Confederation Bike Trail made it (relatively) painless! ;) The owner is super friendly, helpful, and eager to please. I would (and will) highly recommend this property to friends and family... especially if you plan on 'hanging around' for more than a few days!
Planned on staying Friday and Saturday nights. Jay double booked by mistake but was very apologetic about it. He arranged a room for us at the Marina close by which was great. He was very nice and came by to meet us, we even got to meet his sweet dog Lulu. The place was comfortable and great temperature. Air conditioning in the bedroom made for a great sleep. About 8 mins to Mahone Bay or Chester where there are great places to eat. He has thought of everything you could need for a home away from home. Love the decor. Overall, had a great stay.
We stayed at Far Far Away for 2 weeks in August. It was so peaceful and beautiful. The house is very comfortable. We enjoyed the deck where we could watch the hummingbirds in the morning. The stars are magnificent from the deck as well. The bike trails are fun and Jay has provided very nice bicycles for use. It was a great base to explore the Mahone Bay and St. Margaret's Bay areas. The markets in Chester, Lunenberg and Mahone Bay are fun places for fresh vegetables, fish and baked goods.
The house is very clean. The kitchen is well equipped for simple meals however the propane gas grill provided made meal prep easy for us.
Jay was very knowledgeable of the area and very responsive to questions we had. I would recommend Far Far Away to anyone who is interested in exploring the area by car, by foot or by bicycle.
After a 4-day very social conference in Halifax I was looking to escape somewhere quiet before work took me to Quebec. This guesthouse was the perfect choice for my two day getaway. The amenities were perfect in this well maintained quaint guesthouse - everything you need or want to feel at home, tucked away in Chester.
The trails nearby were lovely and it was close proximity to Mahone Bay, Chester and Lunenburg if you wanted to escape for some great food (Salt Shaker Deli and Mateus Bistro) and a quaint seaside experience.
Owner was friendly and helpful - with discounts and recommendations on nearby haunts.
Would definitely return!
I liked the privacy of our own cabin. Main bedroom spacious and comfortable, second bedroom small but functional. We liked accessing the trail right behind the property leading to Mahone Bay.
white sand beaches, 2 minutes from Oak Island, 25 minutes from UNESCO World Heritage Town of Lunenburg, Ovens Provincial Park, cafes, pubs, farmers markets, bakeries
