Secluded Ohana (1/1 Cottage) with Superb Ocean Views on Gorgeous Hamakua Coast Estate – The Garden House Hideaway
Constructed of Indonesian hardwoods, this fully furnished Studio Ohana sits on the beautifully landscaped grounds of an estate overlooking the beautiful Hamakua Coast. Just 25 minutes from Hilo, the property enjoys sweeping views across fields and trees down to the ocean with spectacular sunrises. A variety of organic fruits, vegetables and exotic plantings fill this 3-½ acre property, and a small flock of sheep resides, picturesquely, in the pasture. A relaxing, aesthetic & truly Hawaiian experience, perfect for anyone seeking privacy & nature.
This is a rare opportunity to enjoy the splendor of one of the Big Islands premier – and most sought after – locations. . The estate is completely off-grid but with all amenities available for a luxurious ‘living green’ experience.
Windy and her twin six year olds stayed for two weeks at the end of summer.. The children loved the animals, the swing in the old mango tree, and the many plants. They even got to do a bit of gardening of their own. One of the twins suggested the name "Garden House" for this cottage. Windy commented that she and the twins had the best time. They had great fun at the Big Island beaches and the Garden House Hideaway was the perfect spot to spend their vacation. She and the twins are planning to return in the Fall for another extended stay.
Let me just say, Mary and her hideaway was easily one of my favorite places I've ever stayed. Her property has an incredible view with some of the sweetest animals to greet you and make you feel right at home. She's very accommodating and makes sure you have everything you need. The outdoor bathroom is really cool and well put together. The beds are comfortable as well. The entire stay was a dream. I will certainly be returning to see Mary and this place someday soon!
This cottage was clean and had everything we needed to live simply. Due to solar power we were careful to conserve, but were able to plug in our mifi hotspot and use our Verizon for phone & internet. 2-minute shower is encouraged. We are accustomed to marine showers, so this was not a problem. Coqui frogs sang us to sleep at night. Mary was very friendly and made sure we had what ww needed.
GARDEN HIDEAWAY WAS THE PERFECT SPOT FOR MY WIFE AND I TO GET AWAY AND DECOMPRESS...OFF THE GRID, BUT CLOSE ENOUGH TO ALLOW US TO EXPLORE THE BIG ISLAND. MARY COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A NICER, MORE CONSIDERATE HOST AND WE THANK HER FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEARTS FOR ALLOWING US TO EXPERIENCE HER COTTAGE...AND ALL HER LITTLE HELPERS...MISS THEM ALL. I fell in love with Garden House Hideaway and Hawaii. Mary's cottage is the perfect place from which to explore the Island. The cottage is lovely, private and unique. While it is on solar and totally off the grid, it felt just like home, but gave us the opportunity to experience a relaxing living-green situation. The bathroom is a garden wonder! It is completely private but with a fresh outdoor feel. Ocean breezes kept the cottage cool and comfortable. The grounds are immaculately tended and beautiful with a great ocean view. Garden House Hideaway is a true paradise get-away.
Mary's Garden House Hideaway is one of the best, quiet and peaceful hideaways that you will enjoy in the Big Island. It is located in the off-the-grid area of the rural north, 20-25 minutes from Hilo. At first getting there was a trek, but once you get there you will see a beautiful vista, lovely facility, exotic plant life, fun animals and a wonderful host.
One key points into making your stay special is to make sure to have enough time to see whatever you need to see (which you really need time for. You can drive the entire island in 4 or so hours. We did not have this luxury because there's many stops to see, which will take your time); feel the beauty of the area (which is no doubt amazing and spectacular everywhere. Mary's hideaway is a jewel!); and be in the presence of something beautiful (which is really ineffable. You will know and realize it once you are there).
+First, if you want to enjoy your stay in the Big Island, relinquish your urban city perspective. It's more beautiful this way.
+When planing to decide on where to to stay, consider Mary's facility...beautiful, peaceful and homey.
+After you decide to stay with Mary's facility, plan an itinerary. She has many information about the island in her cottage.
+In your initial itinerary, before you head to the island - first, we would suggest to rent an SUV or off road vehicle, just in case. The hideaway is off-grid and out in the rural areas of the upper north. Smaller vehicles is ok, but has less engine power and traction to go up hill and off the beaten path (you will go through unpaved stretch road. The road is new)
+Second, make sure to spend some time getting to know your host. This was a missed opportunity for us since we only stayed there a very short time. She's a very nice and beautiful host. Also, enjoy her pets: Bonnie (she looks like a polar bear), Copper (he may look like Koojo, but is friendly and energetic young dog) and little Trouble (such an adorable cat!) Also, there's one cow and few sheep.
+Last tip... JUST enjoy your stay!
Unfortunately, we did not have a good experience during our stay at this property and left after just 10 hours. While clean and cozy, there were some aspects that we found to be badly misrepresented:
There is no air conditioning, but only a single ceiling fan, and all doors and windows need to be open for there to be any air circulation.
In addition to the shower, the toilet and sink are also located outside and are alternately surrounded by bamboo stalks and a shower curtain.
Given that the property is solar powered and derives water from rainfall, there are significant restrictions on both electricity and water usage - the house rules limit showers and microwave use to 2-3 minutes, for instance.
The property is not private and is directly adjacent to the owners home.
There is no Internet or cell phone reception.
This property is aptly described as off the grid and refers not to just a secluded getaway, but one where you need to be comfortable with an experience lacking modern conveniences.
A few miscellaneous items to note: there are two large dogs and a cat that roam free and enter the property. The dogs are not trained. The road leading up to the property is unpaved and its use may be prohibited by the car rental agreement.
Finally, it's worth noting that our attempts to reach a resolution with the property manager did not go well and we were forced into protracted conversations with the Home Away complaints department to obtain any sort of relief. Buyer beware...
Nearby: Akaka Falls; Tropical Gardens; swimming, surfing & snorkeling. Hilo, 19 miles away, offers golfing, museums, theaters, shopping, a variety of fine cuisines, kayaking, Japanese gardens, beaches, university, the Macadamia nut factory, a rainforest zoo, and a coffee mill. Kilauea volcano is close-by & well worth a tour - especially at night when the red-hot lava flows into the ocean.
Other Activities: shopping, kayaking, boating, wildlife viewing
