One of the finest views in America. At an elevation of 1,500 feet you are generally above the coastal fog. One mile from Highway One. Sunrise over your meadow, sunsets over the ocean. Wildlife, in addition to your own: deer, bobcats, coyotes, wild turkeys, fox and condors! Very private: Electronic locked steel gate, clothing optional 24/7. I Pod dock, XM satellite radio, three LED HDDVR's, two speakers in every room. WiFi and internet service. Best for one or two couples - you'll flip a coin to see who gets the upstairs bedroom, with views to Japan and pop-up LED HDDVR TV. Clear glass skylights over every bed, for the stars. Air bed on the deck. Very green: double paned, tinted Pella windows and doors, radiant in- floor heating, seven layers of insulation.
WE LOVE DOGS AND HORSES, so if you have either and want to bring them, they would love it here. (Extra charge for horses.) No cats, please.
Soporific deep cushion deck furniture: 12 chairs and 2 chaise's, plus a large coffee table, and a tile- topped dining seating six. Large lower deck and another deck in back that seats four and sleeps one. All cushions are 4' deep Sunbrella, web bottoms. Large bottom cushion for slouching and napping. In silence. Or with music.
We have a great sound system, but sometimes it is better to just sit on the deck and listen: the wind in the trees, the zoom of humming birds, the distant gobble of wild turkeys, the occasional screech of a hawk or falcom, the flutter of the wings of a startled owl ...
We meet most of Forbe's Standards for a 5 Star Resort. Sorry, no room service.
If creativity is your thing, if you thrive on originality and the unusual, this is your place. Finished building in April, 2010. We have lots of whimsy mixed in with fine art and sculpture; a kind of a whacky elegance. 'Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife....' (Thomas Gray)
We call it Moose Lodge as a play on words, for our lovable hound, Moose. But this is deinitely not a men's fraternal organization.
Please note that the words 'stunning', 'breathtaking' 'awesome' and 'spectacular' were never used in the narrative above. Those words have been co-opted by the realtors.
'On this majestic set of battlements - watched over by eagles, suspended so far above the ocean that even the barks of sea lions are muted- who wouldn't feel safe? At this height, almost the only sound is the wind in the redwoods and Big Sur looks rugged and unscalable. I have never seen another place in the world like it. Its ridges and promontories inspire mingled feelings of peace and power and health... simply to exist here is to feel purified.' Paul Theroux, Bon Appetit, March, 1994

About Bill and Anne Burleigh
My wife and I are in our seventies, going on fifties. Bill is a retired judge, and Anne still teaches people how to sing. We live here eight months a year, then rent it during the summer. We enjoy sharing this remarkable place. We have two dogs, two horses, and eight chickens - the latter at Anne's home in Carmel Valley. I guess we just like all living things, including people.
Bill and Anne Burleigh purchased this Lodge in 1973
Why Bill and Anne Burleigh chose Big Sur
It seems unlikely that one could fall in love with an inanimate object, but 40 years ago I fell in love with one that is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide: Big Sur, California. Unlike most love affairs, this one has never dimmed or disappointed me. Big Sur is my passion. It might be yours. (The original home here burned in 2008; rebuilt in 2010)
What makes this Lodge unique
Sensuality. Music. Laughter. Reading. Privacy. Whimsy. Art and sculpture. Freedom to sing loud, dance 'til you drop. Bang the big gongs at the entrance. Get naked. Just plain let loose. Leave the frantic world behind. Drop out. These are unique things in our normal, hectic busy lives. Life here is not normal. We have something precious here, something you can't find in the finest, most exclusive and expensive resorts: TOTAL PRIVACY. Think about it.

The Best of Big Sur!
We were most fortunate to stay at the Moose Lodge in June. Words cannot describe the lodge and its surroundings. If they could, they would all be superlatives ! Our family has been traveling to Big Sur for over twenty years. Accommodations have included tents, cabins, houses, and 5 star resorts. Although any trip to Big Sur is tremendous, our recent vacation week at the Moose Lodge was by far our best. Bill and Anne make the lodge so accommodating we felt as if we were staying at our own home. The love for Big Sur that fills the lodge is indescribable. The home is beautiful, serene, and restful. The views from the lodge are sublime. They will forever be imprinted in our minds. As other reviewers have similarly stated, this was our best vacation ever. I would most strongly encourage anyone visiting Big Sur to consider staying at the Moose Lodge. We will again. As soon as we got home to Pennsylvania we reserved the Moose Lodge for a week next year. Bill and Anne, you have our most sincere thanks for making your home our home .
THE GREATEST WEEK OF OUR LIVES
"The Greatest Week of Our Lives"- enough said.
For those of you who require more than this one sentence (no matter how impactful) I will add this: the adults who stayed at Moose Lodge have also visited, in some degree of comfort, the following locations: the Greek Islands, all of Scandinavia, Hawaii, Singapore, China, Taiwan, Tokyo, virtually all the countries of Western Europe, Prague, Gdansk, Krakow and several countries in Eastern Europe, the shores of Newfoundland, British Columbia, Mexico, Brazil and.......well, you get the picture. I forgot to mention any locale in the Caribbean or Mediterranean or place elsewhere lapped by equatorial waters. Each of us has also driven, quite leisurely, across the expanse of the United States and saw a lot of beauty while doing so. Personally, I love everything about the Atlantic Ocean- the villages that dot its coastline, the people, the food, the history- you name it.
None of those travel experiences came close to what we experienced while at Moose Lodge. Each of us was stunned by how powerfully it transformed our feelings about the pieces of the world we'd already seen- and there are several strong cynics among us.
It was the greatest week of our lives.
Give yourself a tremendous favor: stay there. And invite me when you do?
We are in love with Moose Lodge, just spent the most glorious week here for our anniversary get-away and this place went beyond our expectations on all levels! The location is so perfect, minutes from all the fun places to dine, listen to music, hikes and the best dog-friendly beach (Pfeiffer). But, that’s if you can pry yourself away from the lodge…the sunsets are crazy gorgeous from this place above the clouds, the hikes right off the property are most enjoyable, loooove the deck, relaxing on the very comfortable outdoor furniture while reading and sipping wine, watching the humming birds, taking in the amazing view and fresh air, throwing fish on the grill, and star gazing while soaking in the Jacuzzi. Ahhhh, and sleep is amazing –peace, quiet and fresh air make for a great night’s sleep. Also, what a great outdoor shower, especially for a quick doggie wash after the beach! Bill and Anne are wonderful; we haven’t met them but we love them. Thank you again for the best romantic get-away!
Exceeded the hype
We stayed for one glorious week with our 2 teenaged girls and 2 german shepherds. The property was magnificent. The views were heady and sitting on the deck was heavenly. The dogs LOVED the long, unleashed hikes and I loved the peace, tranquility and beauty. I wrote 2 short stories in record time there perched upstairs next to the window. I have to say, would not bring the girls again, not enough action for teenagers who are city slickers. However, as a getaway for Larry and me, sublime. Bill was a fantastic host who would make a wonderful product manager, such was his ability to think ahead for our comfort's sake. Thumbs up, thumbs up, thumbs up!!!

This listing is very accurate. The only thing it doesn't include is how marvelous the night sky looks when sitting in the hot tub, or how beautiful are the sunsets or peaceful the early morning dawns. The inside of the lodge is clever, artistic and functional. You will be entertained and pleased with the art work and architecture. It is really hard to capture the beauty of this property in a picture but this site has done a good job of showing future guests what to expect. What it doesn't show is the cozy interior and the gorgeous views from the deck. It is very clean and well-maintained and the owner even left us some wine, a cool book he authored and Moose Lodge t-shirts. We have rented here for years and were sad when we heard that High Pacific had burned to the ground in the last Big Sur fire. It was hard to imagine any place that we'd enjoy as much but we are delighted to say Moose Lodge is just as delightful a retreat and we enjoyed the outdoor shower, hot tub and new deck even more. I would for sure recommend this property to anyone and if fact we are hoping for a return visit this spring. Our favorite acitvity would be hiking. You can walk out the door of the lodge and head down the road through the Redwoods and up the hill for miles. Beautiful vistas and easy hike. Come back to the lodge, jump in the hot tub for a bit and then head out to one of many fun Big Sur dining spots. You won't be disappointed with any meal they serve. We found the Burleigh's very helpful with suggestions and attentive to our questions. Moose Lodge for us is a magical retreat that is hard to discribe. It is our touchstone. A place to get away from the demands of our busy lives. I have to say we listen to music a lot but not the TV. We ponder for hours the fog and watch for shooting stars on the deck till we fall asleep. There is nothing I could say that would be a negative. Maybe that there never seems to be a long enought stay! Go and enjoy if you can. It will be a joy and when it comes time to bid goodbye to the wildlife, the wind in the redwoods and the views you will be relaxed , refreshed and renewed. We spend most our time at the Lodge. Bring in your food and wine from town. Except for the beach, to dine and hike we rarely leave. There is no better place to go.
Twice as Nice
I wrote a review for this wonderful mountain retreat after a stay last year. Obviously we enjoyed it so much that we had to come back.
Living in a city with all kinds of lights to interfere, I had forgotten how magnificent the night sky is-the view from the hot tub at Moose Lodge is truly inspiring. Last time we watched hummingbirds and even had a bobcat at our front door. This time there were deer munching Bill's plants, Quail families running everywhere, and fog covering the hills below. I look forward to the views in different seasons.
Bill is such a gracious host-even furnishing beds and bowls for our ferocious Maltese dogs. The property is well maintained and even improved from our last visit. I recommend Moose Lodge to anyone wanting to stay in a beautiful house with magnificent views, great hiking, and abundant wildlife.
Count the dewdrops on a blade of grass. Or, watch the breeze blow your list of things-to-do away.. (Thanks, Greg Brown) This is where you leave the craziness behind. You can get lost in a book, music, TV or each other, with no distractions or demands. If you have to get out, there are elegant, modest and funky restaurants within a few miles. Or you can drive to Pebble Beach for golf, or Carmel for shopping. But, really, why did you come here? Isn't this your escape? This can be your sanctuary; safe, quiet and sensual. And often fun. You are not likely to ever forget your visit here. Many guests never drive their car while they are visiting. Read our reviews. SEVEN NIGHT MINIMUM, SAT. TO SAT., FOUR ADULTS OR ONE FAMILY OVER AGE 16, MAXIMUM. Best for a single couple in love. No events permitted by zoning regulations.
