Overview

About the property

Cabin, 4 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

You may have to speak a little louder at the "Old Fisherman's Cottage," as the sound of waterfalls abound at this unique vacation rental. The main cabin was built on 6 acres and only 50 feet from Beech Creek, where only the creek does the rushing.

The cabin's interior features native ash flooring, white pine paneling, and lodge decor. There are 4 bedrooms in the main cabin, two queens, one full, one full/twin bunk. The main cabin has a single bath. A large screened porch with table and chairs, a porch swing and other seating opens onto a sun deck then a short ramp to the pavillion, then to a rock patio and streamside hot tub. This cabin has all the comforts of home in a private wilderness setting.

A second cabin is available if needed. It features a queen bed, full bath with antique claw foot soaking tub, kitchenette and covered porch with rhododendron railing overlooking the waterfall. This charming, romantic getaway is elevated and has the feel of a tree house. It is finished with all native wood and cathedral ceiling. It has its on TV with Direct TV's full movie package. It is located only 50 feet from the main cabin yet retains its on privacy. Open the French doors and let the sound of the waterfall soothe you to sleep. The "Treehouse" does not rent separately to assure the privacy of our main cabin guest.

A streamside 6 person hot tub is set in a tanquil location just a few feet from the waters edge.

An old, abandoned, narrow gauge, rail bed provides a wonderful hiking trail up the creek. Great pool fishing on designated trout waters for miles upstream of the cabin. If you prefer to use a guide Foscoe Fishing Co's Orvis endorsed guides often frequent Beech Creek and can meet you on site, or book a float trip down the Watauga for world class trophy trout or smallmouth fishing.

Boating and lake fishing are six miles away on beautiful Watauga Lake. Skiing on Beech Mountain is seven miles away, along with world class restaurants and many other activities. Boone is 12 miles away with a multitude of amenities and activities.

We had an amazing week at this cabin. We were

delighted when we arrived to find everything as

described and then some. Its a beautiful cabin,

beautiful property, and beautiful area. We had a blast!

Can't wait to do it again.

Loved the Cottage and Tree House

  • 5 of 5

The location and view for anyone who loves nature is amazing. The roar of the rolling creek is right in the back yard. I highly recommend adding the treehouse as it very cozy with beautiful views of it's own, while offering some privacy and seclusion from your group.

Not What We Expected!

  • 3 of 5

The best feature this cabin has is the outdoors. If you plan to spend most of your time outside you will love it. It does have a beautiful scenery and the creek is very relaxing. The outside pavilion was really nice and a great place to sit and relax.

However, we went in December and it was very cold so we were limited as to the time we could spend outside. The cabin itself I would not give such great reviews. It definitely needs some updating and some remodeling. First thing we did when we arrived was wash all the sheets and comforters because they had a musty smell. The kitchen was also very old and outdated.

Also I do want to mention that the housekeeper, Patsy, was very nice, helpful and honest in returning some personal items we had left behind. That was very much appreciated! As to our dealing with the owner, Steve, the same can not be said.

Owner's Response: These guest booked for a group of 4. They doubled their group size and brought unauthorized pets. When I asked them about it they got defensive and angry. I deducted the pet fee from their damage deposit and feel certain that is the motive of their review. The sheets are washed after every rental and comforters are washed regularly. It seems odd they could wash 5 sets of sheets and comforters during a 2 night visit. The kitchen was remodeled 3 years ago with new cabinets and counters. Steve Nelson

BEST CABIN IN THE WEST!

  • 5 of 5

This was our THIRD stay at Old Fisherman's Cabin and each time is WONDERFUL! The river sounds are so peaceful and the swing under the porch is the best place to nap! Evenings around the firepit are so relaxing! YOU SHOULD STAY HERE! Yes, the dogs bark, but that is natural and nature is the whole point of being there!!!!

Cabin w/ backyard river and waterfalls

  • 4 of 5

My #1 Tip - Don't rely solely on GPS and be sure you follow written directions to cabin.

We truly enjoyed our family trip to stay at this rental. The cabin itself is basic and simple- one bathroom, one shower, old school décor and functional furniture. The kitchen has the fundamental essentials needed to prepare a meal, so if you’re a cook, bring your own equipment (my cast iron skillet came in very handy on more than one occasion). The separate treehouse is a cool feature for the lucky couple that gets to stay there (very cozy and private with a nice porch to sit and watch the river). The property this cabin sits on is lovely. The river and waterfalls in the back yard just made our day and provided us with some excellent photo ops. The kids loved fishing and caught two nice-sized trout. There were lots of wildlife encounters to enjoy (from a large snake to a pileated woodpecker). Our two German Shepherd brothers had the time of their lives at this place! In my opinion, the back yard “pavilion” is what makes this rental above average. You can tell it was built with lots of forethought and love and we spent a lot of time out there, socializing and staying out of the non-stop rain. Factor in the hot tub, fire pit and other amenities and this rental is a great selection if you need to have lots of options for staying put while on vacation. (Boone is 23+ minutes of winding roads, but it's a very pretty drive).

The Pros: Comfortable, cozy cabin with an awesome backyard river and waterfalls. You can see and hear the waterfalls from pretty much anywhere you are on the property, even while in the house. Covered “pavilion” deck with various swings and its own kitchen is absolutely awesome, especially if the weather is bad. The wifi worked fine.

The Cons: Neighbors in mobile home just across the river are always in your line-of-sight. They have a large dog that barks continuously when he’s outside. The cabin is not isolated or private and there were random people walking through the yard (to fish upstream) on two separate occasions. Beds in the cabin are very soft and fluffy, which wreaked havoc on us older people with back issues. (The kids were fine with them). No Verizon cell phone coverage – at all – until you’re about half-way down the mountain (although this actually could be a "pro" as well)

GREAT PLACE!!

  • 5 of 5

My family loved the house, and exploring the creek. We made a lot of memories here and will be back. We spent most of our time on the outside deck cooking, playing games and just having a relaxing time. Thank you for sharing your home Steve! You have a beautiful place!

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a great month, I can't believe it is over. Of all our summers in the "highlands" this has been the best. I couldn't keep the kids out of the creek - swimming and catching critters. Perfect place for the extended family-lots of relaxing for everyone! Thank You! See you again
