There’s no need for a pool with the healing waters of the Laguna de Apoyo in your front yard.
To stay at Quinta Lee is to experience the richness of nature and the feel of Nicaragua.
Nicaragua's weather invites outdoor living. The open aired living space and and large covered terrace make this home a unique getaway. The beachfront patio will allow you to relax and dine in the shade as you take in the view of Volcan Mombacho. You can enjoy a hammock and nap to your heart’s content, or simply step into the warm waters of the Laguna for a swim. This beautiful paradise is surrounded by the lush Laguna de Apoyo Ecological Reserve. Don’t be surprised to hear the roar of a howler monkey or the sweet singing of a mot-mot.
This 4 bedroom and 5.5 bathroom home is made up of two separate buildings, both facing the pristine waters of the Laguna. Quinta Lee is constructed with local hardwoods and the locally hand made furniture gives it a true Nicaraguan flavour. The spacious main house has a fully equipped kitchen which looks upon the huge palm roof patio. This open concept kitchen is decorated with hand painted tiles, hardwood cabinets, and a large rustic wooden island. There is an outdoor barbecue, two dining areas, powder room, and a bedroom with private bath, all of which are equipped with fans to keep you cool and comfortable.
In the second house there are three bright bedrooms each with private tiled baths. All of the bedrooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans. The front two rooms open onto the stunning front garden and Laguna, and the rear room opens onto the back garden.
The well tended gardens are bursting with bouganvilla, gardenia and hibiscus flowers. Palm trees sway in the breeze, dappling the shade over the lake front patio. The large back yard is complete with organic mango, papaya, lime, orange and banana trees along with a small herb garden.
Everyone who stays at Quinta Lee falls in love with Wilmer & Estella, our delightful caretakers. Spanish speaking, they have a vast knowledge of the area and Nicaraguan culture. They are willing and very happy to help with anything you need. Wilmer and Estella live in their home at the rear of the property, out of sight of the main house. They are always close at hand, and always respectful of our guests’ privacy.
The Laguna de Apoyo is a perfect jumping off point for all sorts of activities. Granada is only a 25 minute drive away so it is easy to head into town for some fine dining or market shopping. Alternatively, there are some lovely local restaurants that surround the Laguna, or simply ask Estela to cook you up one of her deliciously authentic Nicaraguan meals.
You can also take a day trip to the Pacific coastal beaches, which are a 2-3 hour drive from the Laguna, go for nature walks up the Mombacho Volcano, or rent kayaks to explore the Laguna.
A note to the wise... as in much of Nicaragua, the last half km of road into Quinta Lee is a bit rough. Although a normal car is sufficient (a taxi will take you there), we prefer a 4WD vehicle.

About Lee Richmond (Ms.)
We are a family from Vancouver, Canada who fell in love with Nicaragua in 2005. We were fortunate to have found our property with one of the buildings having been recently constructed. We completely rebuilt the main house and have loved every minute of adding to our beautiful Quinta Lee
Lee Richmond (Ms.) purchased this House in 2005
Why Lee Richmond (Ms.) chose Masaya
We knew that the Laguna was the place for us after our first visit. It is located in the crater of an ancient volcano. The word Apoyo in Spanish means ‘support’. It’s meaning is clear as it is integral to the survival of the multitude of different species of plants and animals that thrive in and around it. The Laguna is an irresistible natural gem, unmatched in its beauty and serenity. With the breezes and the pristine warm water, that is ideal for swimming, we could not resist making the Laguna our home away from home.
What makes this House unique
The location is unbeatable, placing you close to the amenities of city life yet retaining the tranquility and peacefulness of a private beach get away. The open concept design is perfect for gatherings of family and friends. The daily maid service and 24 hour guard creates a safe and comfortable environment in which to fully enjoy your holiday. There truly is no other home in Nicaragua that captures the beauty and essence of this unbelievable country in such a relaxing and comfortable manner.

A gorgeous home with incredible views, lots of space and the sweetest most attentive staff.
We had an incredible visit to the laguna. The house was absolutely breathtaking. We loved being right on the water and being able to swim whenever we wanted. The open concept allowed us to enjoy the beauty and nature that the laguna offers. There was plenty of space for all 8 of us and we couldn't have been more comfortable. The caretaker was extremely sweet and helpful and took really good care of us. 😍😍😍
Best part of our trip!!!!
The house was absolutely amazing. You can tell all of the love and care that goes into the house. Wilmer and his wife were incredibly gracious, always cleaning and there if we needed anything. The food they cooked was delicious. The driver that they hooked us up with was also absolutely the best, use Pablo!! We are already talking about how we can get back to this slice of paradise!
Quinta Lee was such an incredible oasis! Our entire family met up in Nicaragua (two 30-year olds and our parents- both mid 60's) and we had an amazing time! We stayed at the house for 5 nights and would have stayed for 15 more! Seriously-- so relaxing, so peaceful.....great way to re-group and re-charge our batteries. The house is absolutely beautiful; it is tucked away down a secluded dirt road (yes it is bumpy and rocky so I would definitely suggest a 4-wheel drive car) and you are literally ON the lake.
The gardens and the set-up of the house is stunning- Wilmer has quite the green thumb. The open-living arrangement of the house is also nice, it makes you really feel as though you are one with nature. As others noted, there is always a breeze coming off of the lake so very few times were we uncomfortable (and locals were telling us that this week was incredibly hot for them). To note, the AC's in the sleeping rooms worked great and we slept VERY well.
As for the lake- its AMAZING! Best lake I have been to, hands-down (and I am from Colorado and spend summers up on a lake in Minnesota). Crystal blue, clean, and great temperature. We brought floaties/rafts that we blew up and literally spent hours floating and playing around on those, and the dock! We stopped at the local grocery store in Granada and stocked-up on food. We were happy to have done this, seeing as every time we even contemplated leaving the house, we were sad! Estela and Wilmer were around when we needed them and to check-in. We had Estela cook for us 2 nights and it was incredible. She is quite the cook and all of us agreed that we should have had her cook every meal! They are very nice and helpful!!!!!!
STAY AT THIS HOUSE! We cannot wait to book again and return! All you need is sunscreen, a swim suit, a book, and the mindset to just relax. (* To note- if you are looking for a 5 star hotel- this is not for you! You cannot drink the water and you cannot flush toilet paper down the toilets-- however, my parents who usually travel very comfortably found this to be just that, comfortable and quite nice).
Thank you for your thoughtful comments!
Just a note....2 wheel drive vehicles do come quite frequently. The road is 'mostly' paved. Also, the water is from our well. We provide bottled water for our guests, but the local folks drink the tap water.
Beautiful, stunning location and house!
This was such a beautiful spot on the volcanic lake. Waking up to the serenity and view was just breathtaking. The place was well equipped with everything you needed and more! We loved it so much that we spent less time touring the nearby areas (as anticipates) and more time enjoying this home. The lake being a made from a volcanic crater was warm and clean - wonderful to swim without many people around and calm waters. The kids loved the house and location. There were many well thought spots to chill out and just relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Wilmer and his wife were also very kind and helpful. They had the best hairdryer I have ever used (and that is very important to us ladies!).
I would suggest a 4 by 4 to be safe as the roads leading to the house can be bumpy. It is hard to find, so use google maps offline, which worked wonders. Also recommend grocery shopping before you get here as the restaurant nearby is great, but a tad expensive. We shopped in Granada, A which was great to visit, but there are stops a long the way that we missed. A great place though, which was a local restaurant located on the right hand side of the roundabout toward Masaya just about 30 minutes from the airport was very delicious and super inexpensive. You might recognize it by the furniture, which is all made from the tree trunks and branches.
For touring: The location is very close to the active volcano, best to view in the evening.
Also, bring earplugs as you may get woken up by the nearby howler monkeys and roosters.
We would definitely return to this place on our next visit to Nicaragua and thank Lee for sharing with us.
Lovely Lakefront Home
Stayed at Qunita Lee for 3 nights and wished it were more. The house is well designed with open kitchen, dining and relaxing areas. The garden is beautiful and has several places to sit and relax. We had breakfast and lunch at home and ate at local restaurants we could walk to for dinner. I will plan better next time and shop for dinner as well. We didn't want to leave. Thank you Lee for sharing your home.
Amazing stay at Quinta Lee!
We spent a total of 6 days at Quinta Lee and loved it! It is so serene and relaxing, you could spend all day starting out at the lagoon. There is always a lovely breeze so even though the temperatures were high it never felt oppressive. The evenings were always cool and quiet. Wilmer was very sweet and accommodating. My kids loved swimming out to the dock and lounging in the hammocks. They also loved the animals that would come around like dogs, cats and chickens. In fact, they named them all including the geckos! The only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the location. It is quite a drive up from the highway, 20 minutes each way. This made for an inconvenience when we needed to run out for something we forgot. Next time I would definitely buy more supplies so we didn't have to leave at all. The other suggestion I would make is stocking up the kitchen a bit more. We didn't seem to have enough cups to go around sometimes and just a few spices to work with would have been nice when cooking. Otherwise I would definitely stay again, just plan a little better on our end.
The Laguna is well known for world class bird watching. There is a Spanish school a 20 minute walk along the Laguna road.
