Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 5.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

There’s no need for a pool with the healing waters of the Laguna de Apoyo in your front yard.

To stay at Quinta Lee is to experience the richness of nature and the feel of Nicaragua.

Nicaragua's weather invites outdoor living. The open aired living space and and large covered terrace make this home a unique getaway. The beachfront patio will allow you to relax and dine in the shade as you take in the view of Volcan Mombacho. You can enjoy a hammock and nap to your heart’s content, or simply step into the warm waters of the Laguna for a swim. This beautiful paradise is surrounded by the lush Laguna de Apoyo Ecological Reserve. Don’t be surprised to hear the roar of a howler monkey or the sweet singing of a mot-mot.

This 4 bedroom and 5.5 bathroom home is made up of two separate buildings, both facing the pristine waters of the Laguna. Quinta Lee is constructed with local hardwoods and the locally hand made furniture gives it a true Nicaraguan flavour. The spacious main house has a fully equipped kitchen which looks upon the huge palm roof patio. This open concept kitchen is decorated with hand painted tiles, hardwood cabinets, and a large rustic wooden island. There is an outdoor barbecue, two dining areas, powder room, and a bedroom with private bath, all of which are equipped with fans to keep you cool and comfortable.

In the second house there are three bright bedrooms each with private tiled baths. All of the bedrooms have air conditioning and ceiling fans. The front two rooms open onto the stunning front garden and Laguna, and the rear room opens onto the back garden.

The well tended gardens are bursting with bouganvilla, gardenia and hibiscus flowers. Palm trees sway in the breeze, dappling the shade over the lake front patio. The large back yard is complete with organic mango, papaya, lime, orange and banana trees along with a small herb garden.

Everyone who stays at Quinta Lee falls in love with Wilmer & Estella, our delightful caretakers. Spanish speaking, they have a vast knowledge of the area and Nicaraguan culture. They are willing and very happy to help with anything you need. Wilmer and Estella live in their home at the rear of the property, out of sight of the main house. They are always close at hand, and always respectful of our guests’ privacy.

The Laguna de Apoyo is a perfect jumping off point for all sorts of activities. Granada is only a 25 minute drive away so it is easy to head into town for some fine dining or market shopping. Alternatively, there are some lovely local restaurants that surround the Laguna, or simply ask Estela to cook you up one of her deliciously authentic Nicaraguan meals.

You can also take a day trip to the Pacific coastal beaches, which are a 2-3 hour drive from the Laguna, go for nature walks up the Mombacho Volcano, or rent kayaks to explore the Laguna.

A note to the wise... as in much of Nicaragua, the last half km of road into Quinta Lee is a bit rough. Although a normal car is sufficient (a taxi will take you there), we prefer a 4WD vehicle.

About Lee Richmond

We are a family from Vancouver, Canada who fell in love with Nicaragua in 2005. We were fortunate to have found our property with one of the buildings having been recently constructed. We completely rebuilt the main house and have loved every minute of adding to our beautiful Quinta Lee

Lee Richmond purchased this house in 2005

Why Lee Richmond chose Nicaragua

We knew that the Laguna was the place for us after our first visit. It is located in the crater of an ancient volcano. The word Apoyo in Spanish means ‘support’. It’s meaning is clear as it is integral to the survival of the multitude of different species of plants and animals that thrive in and around it. The Laguna is an irresistible natural gem, unmatched in its beauty and serenity. With the breezes and the pristine warm water, that is ideal for swimming, we could not resist making the Laguna our home away from home.

What makes this house unique

The location is unbeatable, placing you close to the amenities of city life yet retaining the tranquility and peacefulness of a private beach get away. The open concept design is perfect for gatherings of family and friends. The daily maid service and 24 hour guard creates a safe and comfortable environment in which to fully enjoy your holiday. There truly is no other home in Nicaragua that captures the beauty and essence of this unbelievable country in such a relaxing and comfortable manner.

A letter from Nov. 2008 tenants

I don't know where to begin. These last few days at Casa Apoyo have to be at the top of my best vacations ever! I have copied this email to my family that stayed with us there in case they want to add something I missed. First of all, the property was absolutely gorgeous and extremely clean. What a gorgeous view to wake up to and go to bed to each day. I cannot describe to you how wonderful Wilmer and Estella were to us. They were extremely patient and accommodating with all our demands and requests - especially when it came to food! We really want the property owners to know how lucky they are to have them managing their home. It felt like we were leaving family when we had to say goodbye. We definitely plan on returning and could not see ourselves staying anywhere else. Of all the things I miss from Nicaragua, I would have to say Estella's cooking is at the top! .....we look forward to seeing Wilmer and his family during our next vacation rental.

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Quintalee. This was not our first visit to Nicaragua but previous stays were at the beach in Tola. This was a completely different experience but just as enjoyable. Wilmer and Estelle, the home caretakers, were terrific. They were friendly but not intrusive. We had three evening meals cooked by the staff and they were wonderful. We requested typical Nicaraguan cuisine and were not disappointed. The house and the grounds are beautiful - pictures do not do it justice. If you love plants and flowers, this place is for you. The water in the Laguna was amazing - cool without being cold. You can feel the warm currents and the water is crystal clear. We lost power of a couple of times but not inconvenienced at all. Power outages are short lived and part of the experience. The house is a bit off the beaten track which was part of the appeal for my group but be aware that trips to "town" are not quick. The roads were fine, just a little bumpy and curvy. Suggest using the Waze app as gps -worked great. If you take your time and watch out for pedestrians and rogue taxis, all is good. We would most definitely recommend this house to others.

Beautiful gardens and view

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed most things about this home. First off the positive: the view is amazing and just like the photos. The terraced gardens are beautiful. Although we were on a lagoon in a tropical climate we didn't get bit by mosquitos or other bugs which was a worry with the outdoor living. The lagoon water is the perfect temperature and has mineral qualities. My feet were so soft after swimming in the lagoon. The water felt very pure and clean. We enjoyed the lawn and the hammocks and the night time breeze off the lagoon. The wifi worked great and we also received cell service (Claro). The power went out one night but the generator kicked in so we had uninterrupted power...a luxury in Nicaragua. Now the areas that could be better: the A/C units in the two bedrooms in the separate building need to be replaced. I told my husband it felt like I was sleeping under a 747 airplane. I couldn't sleep with the noise. It was actually cool enough to have it off and open the windows up with the breeze but that was really loud too with the howler monkeys going at it all night long along with the barking dogs and birds and the wind hitting the blinds (the sun rises very early). So I really had trouble sleeping in either of those two rooms. The best bedroom is the one in the main house that has a quiet A/C unit and is darker in the morning. But we have two kids who took that bedroom as it made sense for them to have it since it had two beds and it was in the main building. You have to lock up the iron gates of the main building at night so if you are in the other building you are locked out, so to speak, if you don't have the keys to the locks and this seemed a bit much for our two kids to handle. Also the safe didn't work for us and when Wilmer finally got it open we put our passports inside but then the safe didn't work again. We didn't know how we were going to get them out and finally after days of trying everything Wilmer had a locksmith come to break open the safe. We were thankful to get them but it was a bit stressful in the meantime. Finally the couches aren't that comfy. They have floor rugs on top of the cushions which I think are worn out. The floor rugs (woven door mats) are not that comfy to sit on. All and all it was nice and we still enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others. I think that with a little updating of the A/C units, couch cushions, and safe it would be a 5 star property.

Everything One Could Ask For

  • 5 of 5

The property location worth the 'rough' route to it! The yard/gardens are exquisite. Lakeview glorious. Home comfortable. Great use of the out of doors spaces for seating/lounging. Location provides for total privacy with peace & quiet. In our particular situation, we didn't necessarily use the caretakers' services; but, the morning our rental car did not start, Wilmer most certainly "saved the day" in being on site! I have no doubt whatever we might have asked of the caretakers, they would have been of service. I would absolutely return to QuintaLee!

Relax in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

If you want solitude and relaxation and if you want to be able to hear yourself breathe, this is the place for you. From the booking to the stay, everything went very smoothly. Thank you Lee. The place is very clean and the view is unbelievable and the laguna is warm and wonderful to swim in. We had rough waters most of our stay so only got in there twice but was amazing! If I had to add anything it is that you really need to get groceries in Granada before coming here or in Managua. Outside of roadside produce, there was not enough to sustain for a week at the little shops at the top of the crater. Waze App is also something we used for directions that was very helpful. We ate lunch at El Cacique one day which was good - they close early so cooked dinners at the house mostly. You have what you need for utensils etc but need to purchase all spices, coffee, paper towel - anything you absolutely need (always good to know this I find). We wouldn't hesitate to stay at this little piece of paradise again. Sunrises unbelievable! Wilbur dropped in to see us every morning to see if we needed anything and then left us alone because that is what we wanted so appreciated that he respected our privacy.
