Great home on a beautiful island
We had an absolute blast staying at the Pelican. Fishing dock, kayak, appointed kitchen and a grill all made for a wonderful stay (not to mention sunsets on the observatory deck).
This house is perfectly located on the beach. We will definitely be looking to stay here again on our next trip to the island!
Thanks James for the great house!
We look forward to their return
Our family of five (3 kids under 11) recently spent a week at Pelican Brief. It was absolutely heavenly - a REAL vacation. No rushing around AT ALL. The only places to go were any one of the stunning beaches, Barnacles (an easy, outdoor restaurant with seafood and standard pub fare), or the ice cream shop upstairs with Queenies ice cream (SO GOOD).
Pelican Brief faces East and treats you to gorgeous sunrises daily. If sunset is more your thing, you can watch the it from your perch on the roof deck. There is a lovely wrap around deck and a lower, shaded outdoor area under the house with a hammock to kick back and relax in. In front of the house, the beach has oodles of shells and dock was perfect for the kids to alternate fishing and playing. There are plenty of lounge chairs to relax in with a good book, as well as a table and grill if you prefer to eat al fresco.
Inside, Pelican Brief has an open concept layout on the main level with the kitchen, two bedrooms, bathrooms (one en-suite) and two seating/dining areas which overlook a zen-inducing panoroma to sit, drink your beverage of choice, and watch the dolphins swim by. The second floor holds a spacious master-suite with a king-sized bed, seating area, and large bathroom/walk in shower. No need to pack towels - plenty of bath AND beach towels.
If you think you might get tired of the beach, there is a boat/kayak/water toy rental company on North Captiva (Boats and Fun). We did not take advantage of any fishing charters this trip, but those options are available. Driving around on the golf cart looking for gopher tortoises and watching the prop planes land and take off from the landing strip (usually one or two a day) was fun for the kids.
Jim was extremely responsive to any questions we had and very helpful in giving us tips to coordinate our arrival/departure/food arrangements. I can't speak highly enough of this experience. It's a little off the beaten path....but that's the point.
We are so happy that we were able to assist this nice family in giving them a nice deserved and memorable vacation that gave them a family lifetime of memories, and we hope to see them again, and again.
Pelican Brief is a great bay house with awesome sunrises every day!
Pelican Brief was a fun house to watch daily sunrises, dine breakfast lunch and dinner to dolphins and rays and observe countless shore birds every minute. Jim was hospitable and very polite. On warmer days we used the AC but mostly enjoyed the sea breezes by opening the bay facing sliding doors. Getting around North Captiva was fun using the home's lifted golf cart! North Captiva is a wonderful place to kick back and relax and Pelican Brief was the perfect spot to do just that! Thank you Jim for sharing your island home with us!
Nice home and great hosts
My wife and I stayed at Pelican Brief for 3 weeks recently. Jim and his wife could not have been nicer and more attentive about our visit to their home. The house has a great location and North Captiva is a wonderful place for a relaxing time. I wish I would have known about North Captiva and Jim's home when I was working since it is a perfect place to decompress. We enjoyed our stay and we appreciate Jim sharing his home with us.
Fishing Swimming Fun !
We recently celebated our wedding anniversary with some of our children and grandkids while stayng at Pelican Brief, and we couldnt have fonder memories. The owner, Jim, greeted us at the ferry dock and helped shuttle our crew of 7 promptly to the beach home. The house was clean and tastefully decorated with a fully equiped kitchen and more. Being on the sound side of the island, the home offered beautiful views of the morning sunrise. Dolphins, manatees and all kinds of birds made their way by just about each morning. At night, the fishing action was outstanding all along the beach, walking/casting in between the many docks. Speaking of dock, the property has a terrific dock equipped with fish lights as well as a cleaning station with fresh water! We swam daily and the kids enjoyed snorkeling for shells and treasure. August brings the warmest water temps, as well as your typical late day t-storm, which gave us dramatic sunset pictures with double rainbows over our shoulders! The family all had a great time and want to go back!
Thank you Jim!
You nice folks are most welcome😎😎
Heavenly. Best spot on the island.
After a long drive down with 3 small kiddos, I think my whole body just sighed with relief & relaxed as soon as Jim picked us up from Barnacle Phil's and I walked into the door at the Pelican Brief.
The house is beautiful. It is immaculate. AND! it has the perfect layout (especially for families with small kids) as there are multiple dining and seating areas-- in case you ever need to ring the bell & send your battling kids to their respective corners :) The kids room, in particular, was decorated beautifully & whimsically for little bittys. They loved their room and we appreciated the extra wonder it gave them.
I can't say enough about this spot. Jim is a pleasure to talk to & do business with, the house is stunning. It is well-appointed with a hammock, kayak, beach chairs, games.
The private beach & dock make you feel like you are the only ones on the island. We saw manatees, dolphins, every kind of sea bird (brown pelicans, ospreys, anhingas), snakes, snook. We were able to grill out & have a private beach party every night.
I cannot recommend Pelican Brief enough. It is a magical place.
We are so glad you and your family had a great time and we hope to see you again :)
We are right on the beach with an incredible sundeck on the roof. If you like relaxation we have just what the doctor ordered :)
