Welcome! Adams House Mariposa is a stunning, friendly gracious, and quiet 4 bedroom historic custom home in downtown Mariposa. Mariposa is a charming gold rush town near Yosemite. The custom Craftsman house was built in the 1930s, is just one block from restaurants. The stairs and front porch, with its own bench for watching the world go by, are painted in lovely Craftsman colors. Step into the simple elegant high ceiling cathedral living room with Stickley craftsman furniture, numerous books for readers, and a new 49 inch LG Ultra High Resolution 4K TV— and feel the charm. Original artwork and designer furniture throughout. In this home you can relax and read and get to really know and enjoy your family and friends. In the back yard are two picnic tables with four chairs each, and a BBQ.
Built by the Judge Andrew Robert Schottky. Judge Lauritzen was Superior Court Judge from 1967-19887 and came to Mariposa as the District Attorney in the late 1950s. When he retired sold only once again to the next Mariposa County Judge Lauritzen with seven children, Adams House Mariposa has its own history, too. Jeanne and Michael Adams have continually renovated and updated the house since they purchased it as the third owners in 2007. All the carpeting has been removed and the beautiful oak hardwood floors are accented with area rugs. The window coverings and drapes have been replaced. The four bedrooms can accommodate one or up to six or eight people. The house can be divided into two independent units, the main house and the garden apartment. However, we prefer to rent it as one. Sleeping accommodations are: one king bed, one queen, and two trundle beds each can be used one or two singles or made into one king. The sunny breakfast nook looks out into trees and a pleasant view of the surrounding foothills, as do most of the windows. Two bathrooms, a kitchen, and utility room are useful. Mature blue oaks grace the property, because there was an earlier two story house on the property since the mid 19th century. There is off street parking in the rear of the property.
ADAMS FAMILY YOSEMITE/ MARIPOSA HISTORY:
The Adams family Yosemite / Mariposa connection goes back to 1901 when Harry Cassie Best (landscape painter) and Sarah Anne Rippey took out their wedding license in Mariposa and were married near the base of Bridal Veil Fall in Yosemite, sharing champagne with passengers from a stage coach journeying to Yosemite. They returned in 1902 and established Best’s Studio, now known as The Ansel Adams Gallery. The Best’s only daughter Virginia and Ansel Adams took out their wedding license in Mariposa and were married in the upper gallery of Best’s Studio in Yosemite in 1928. Their son Michael and Jeanne Falk took out their wedding license in Mariposa and were married in the Yosemite chapel in 1962. Their son Matthew and MingZhu Hu followed the tradition and got their wedding license in Mariposa and were married in the Yosemite chapel in 2007 The family has continuously owned and operated The Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite since 1902 — first Harry Best, then Virginia and Ansel Adams, then Jeanne Adams, and now Matthew Adams. The Adams family are great readers, have thousands of books and somehow keep acquiring more. So, if you are so inclined, you can dip into classics from the 19th and 20th centuries, with 1851 the earliest publication date. Virginia would tell Jeanne that she hoped that someday many of the family books would be in in Mariposa in a white house with a picket fence. The garden does not have a picket fence, but books are in a white house in Mariposa, for your enjoyment as well.

Mariposa is a sweet, peaceful town with interesting restaurants, museums and shops. The home is historic and close to Yosemite. The mature oaks and hillside views are quite beautiful..
Adams House is the perfect place to rest and relax after a good day of seeing the sites in Yosemite. The front porch view and art-filled interior inspires my creativity.
Thanks, Eve, for the opportunity to review the Adams House. We had a terrific family get-together and were completely satisfied with the arrangements and our stay. The house was cool, spacious, well-equipped, and just a block away from downtown. There was plenty of room for the eight of us to dine together, and then sit around and talk. The coffee nook was a perfect place to hook up to the house WIFI and get some work done. Mariposa is a delightful town. We particularly enjoyed coming back from an excursion to Yosemite to enjoy a concert in the park just 2 blocks away. We also enjoyed the easy access to both the west and south entrance to the Park. Even at the height of summer, we were able to get into the Park early enough to avoid most of the crowds.
The layout of the Adams House worked well for our group of three adult couples. Kitchen, breakfast room and dining room worked very efficiently for our group breakfasts. Beds were comfortable. Living room is spacious. The house itself had many interesting architectural details and we enjoyed the library. Nice to find several guidebooks to the Yosemite area on the shelves, since we mislaid ours on the way out to California. This is an older house, which was far more interesting to us than a bland, cookie cutter modern room. It was clean, although as expected in a house this age, we found the usual dings and wear and tear of a century of life.
The town of Mariposa is charming and we enjoyed some nice meals at good restaurants. In particular, the Savoury was good.
Our main activity was touring Yosemite. You can expect a 40 min. car ride to the park over a good, scenic highway.
Overall, an excellent experience and a good place to stay.
This was a great place for our group of 7 (5 adults and 2 children) to stay for 2 nights while visiting Yosemite. It is a 45 minute drive to the park entrance, but we were able to be in the park during non-peak hours (after 5:00 and early morning). The Adams House was roomy and comfortable, with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Kitchen is well-equipped but we only had breakfast and one dinner and snacks while at the house. It is in a quiet neighborhood and there is a grocery market and plenty of restaurants nearby. Air conditioned, clean, big flat-screen TV, and plenty of room to relax in.
The property was clean and tidy. Everything we needed was left for us. The house is one block away from the bus line to Yosemite.
Really enjoyed this home. Very clean and all the linens were freshly washed. The house is very charming and maintained very well. Fridge and Washer/Dryer were new. Air conditioning worked great. The house was bigger than expected and the beds were very comfortable. Wifi worked great and all the teens in our group were happy. Easy check in and check out.
I would recommend this house and would LOVE to stay here again. Walking distance to Mariposa town. The host Eve was wonderful and very nice. This was a GREAT first experience with VRBO and renting a house.
The stay was comfortable. The rooms were clean and the house was overall in very good shape. There were board games and a nice backyard. I do have to say that the owner should make some comfortable additions to living room furniture. The current ones are great and have that vintage feel but definitely are a notch less comfortable. Maybe add a couple of comfy crunches or live seats to sink in and enjoy the TV. The living room also needs a set of lights to optionally brighten up house if required. He current set of lights is not at all good enough. They give a vintage glow to the room but sometimes what you need is a well lit room. The DVD player was missing even though we inquired before hand and were told that it was there. We carried some DVDs do kids and others but could not use them. It was not a big thing but a bummer nonetheless. The location is right in the mariposa downtown and that is really great. Overall comfortable stay.
Place is quite nice and about an hour away from Yosemite. It is quite charming and comfortable. You can walk to restaurants and bakery. the italian restaurant and the mexican restaurant nearby had good vegetarian options.
