The Owner purchased this house in 2006
We built this second home in West Point to enjoy classic Maine living on the ocean.
We enjoy walking to Cat's Cove to look for flotsam and jetsam and to splash in the waves. It is a relaxing place to just sit and read or just look out over the ocean.
My husband and I spent a week in August here and absolutely loved it. The house is as bright, immaculate, and beautifully decorated as in the pictures, and the views really are that good. The neighborhood is very walkable and charming and the neighbors are friendly. We rented kayaks for the week from someone just down the street and were able to beach them in the cove at the end of the neighborhood, about a 5 minute walk from the house-- very convenient. We bought some art from another neighbor who has a stunning studio in her home.
The only caveat is that the water is not drinkable and you must bring your own-- they provided a gallon which for us was not enough but we didn't re-stock early enough so go ahead and bring more than you think you need! Also, if you are a person who wants long showers or baths, this is not the place for you. Only a stand-up shower that isn't designed to run for a long period of time (water well).
Our hosts were helpful, responsive, and hospitable. They even shared some of their fresh-caught Maine lobsters and showed us how to prepare them! This was one of our best vacations and we hope to return.
After staying in a number of "rustic" (code word for run down) camps in Maine over the years, we really appreciated staying in this lovely new cottage. Robin and Keith thought of everything to make our stay comfortable - paper goods, soap and linens. All we had to bring was our clothes and some groceries. It's even baby-proofed for families with little ones.
Downstairs is the well-equipped kitchen, large dining area, spacious screened porch, half bath and a bedroom. Upstairs is the comfortable living room with flat-screen TV and DVD player with a selection of DVDs, a larger bedroom with walk-in closet, bathroom with shower and a deck. The DR, LR, porch and deck have amazing views of the water and islands. The cottage has lovely tile and maple floors. It is tastefully decorated.
The cottage is in the active fishing village of West Point which located about 15 miles from Bath (groceries, shops, gas) - at the end of the Phippsburg peninsula. You can watch the lobster boats come and go. Keith is somehow related to William Wallace (Braveheart) and is a lobster fisherman. The cottage has interesting photos of the fishing village in years gone by as well as four generations of Keith's family - his grandfather with a prize tuna catch in the '30s, his father with his boat brimming with tuna, Keith with an unbelievably large shark tail, and his daughter with a blue lobster. We bought lobsters from Keith and Robin at a great price. They even delivered them right to the cottage!
There are walking trails. Just down the hill from the cottage is Cat's Cove where you can swim, scramble on the rocks and look for treasures in the sand. The cottage is near Head Beach and Popham Beach State Park and not too far from Reid State Park. It's just down the road from Sebasco Resort where there is a golf course and a spa. It's less than an hour from Freeport, the home of L.L. Bean (open 24 hours/day, 365 days/year) and many other brand name shops.
The only down side was the water situation which is the same for all of the residents of the village. Water from the well was OK to drink but was high in iron and had an odd odor. Robin and Keith provided bottled water to drink and cook with, so it was not a problem.
All in all, it's a great cottage in a great location. It was just what we were looking for. We hope to return some day.
