Our renovated, turn-of-the-century home is accessible by car with no need for a ferry or boat. We sit on a spectacular, multi-acre, oceanfront site, just 30-feet from the water. Bordered by woods on three sides, we overlook a picturesque, rocky cove and wide bay beyond. The front deck facing the water is huge and breathtaking… The only house you can see from our front deck is a mile across the bay! Guests have called the 180-degree view of the ocean and islands beyond one of the most amazing they’ve ever seen. Included is a brand new dock where you can tie up a boat, swim off of, lounge on, and view sea life.
Our kitchen has just been renovated (pics coming soon!) It has new cabinets, beautiful Brazilian soapstone counters, new stainless appliances (including a glass-top stove, french door fridge with icemaker, dishwasher, farmhouse sink, and new dimmable, 3-color temperature lighting under the counters. Also comes with a microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, and quality china and flatware. We wish you happy cooking!
The LaHave Islands: a Unique Destination
From the minute you approach Crescent Beach, a popular 1.2-mile long beach which leads from the mainland out to the LaHave Islands, you know you’ve come to a special place. After driving down the wide beach (or taking the road behind it), you follow a winding road and cross two bridges. You encounter postcard views along every turn -- colorful houses, old fishing wharves, and fishing and pleasure boats passing by. At the end of the road, you’ll find the Fennel Old House.
We are a seven-minute drive from the Lighthouse Route, which runs the mainland between Halifax and Yarmouth. We’re a half-hour’s drive from Bridgewater, which is the area’s main shopping/restaurant area. We’re a 40-minute drive from the historic seaport of Lunenburg and tourist destination of Mahone Bay, and an hour-and a half's drive southwest of Halifax and the airport (YHZ).
Our property offers charm and privacy, yet is located in a vibrant island community, on the most populated of the two dozen islands which make up the LaHave Islands. We’re also and in an area of the South Shore which has much to offer tourists.
Enjoy the outdoors from our sprawling, nicely landscaped yard with flower gardens, 4 sundecks (including a roof deck and deck by the water), floating dock, screen house and screened gazebo perched right on the shore. You can swim off the dock, catch crabs, pick wild blueberries and raspberries, play croquet and badminton, and swing on our tree swing. Or just relax, listening to the seagulls, watching fishing boats in the bay, and viewing deer, seals, otter and blue heron. In the evening, barbecue in the back yard, enjoy spectacular sunsets over the cove, and light a fire in our outdoor fire pit to roast marshmallows.
The Fennel Old House can comfortably sleep seven adults in four bedrooms. The master bedroom has a large, attached changing room, which can also accommodate a crib. The other two upstairs bedrooms have three twin beds. A downstairs bedroom has a double bed and adjoins the bathroom.
Our home features large-window views, wood floors, period-moldings, wainscoting, and tongue-in-groove walls throughout the upstairs. Come home from a day at the beach or touring to warm in front of one of two wood stoves. The first floor also has baseboard electric heating with thermostats in each room, and portable, safe, high-powered heaters on the second floor.
Eat your meals at the dining room table while enjoying a wide open view of the cove and bay through a large picture window. The kitchen is fully equipped with an electric stove, microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, food processor, quality china and flatware, and much more (we love to cook!). The living room has a 27' TV with limited satellite service, DVD & VCR players, a stereo/CD/tape deck, and mini pool table, and a large book collection of Nova Scotian culture. We provide bedding and towels, other supplies such as toilet paper, and a washer/dryer. Yes, we have WIRELESS internet, and the cell service is good. We do not allow smoking of any kind inside our home.
Locally, there are many attractions. Half a dozen beaches are within a 10-minute drive, including Risser's Beach Provincial Park, with a fine-sand beach with lifeguards, winding boardwalk along a back marsh, visitor’s center, a snack bar and shower facility. On our island are many quaint paths and roads to walk or bike, a marine museum, community hall, government wharf, a church, and a cemetery. On nearby Crescent Beach, people love to park their cars on the beach, walk their dogs, surf, kite-board, stroll the beach at sunrise and sunset, and of course, swim!
Several fishermen and their families still live on the islands, some who will take visitors out fishing or on island tours (ask us). Locals also love to share their community's history through casual encounters along the road and at events like the Monday morning coffee hour, serving the best home-made scones and sticky buns you’ve ever tasted – really. The community hall also hosts guest lectures and other events.
Along the Lighthouse Route on the mainland are lots of craft and antique shops, artist studios, restaurants, museums, and historical sites (like Fort Point Museum in LaHave, where the French first landed in Canada in 1604). You can take in musical events, county fairs, farmers’ markets, art shows, ox pulls, movies, theater and more. For sporting activities, you can rent kayaks, golf at several courses, go horseback riding, rock climb, wind surf, para-sail, and enjoy the resort at White Point Beach, where you can get a day pass to use the pools, yard games, and boats.
Don't miss the most famous bakery in Nova Scotia, the LaHave Bakery (15 minutes away), where you can sit down in its quaint dining area and enjoy an amazing breakfast or lunch. Another guest favorite is 'The Ovens,' which is a series of ocean caves accessible by wooded walkways, where the waves pound in and out. At Ross Farm, children will love to see a “working” farm where they still raise animals and grow crops. And bake sales and lobster suppers in community halls all over the area are delicious!
A Quality Rental Experience
We've been renting our homes for 20 years to people from places as far away as Germany and Hong Kong. We strive to make our guests' stays completely enjoyable. After you reserve, we will mail you driving instructions, information about the house, and things to do in the area. The house will be thoroughly cleaned before your arrival and if something should occur during your stay, we have a handyman on standby and a variety of service specialists who should be able to fix any problems quickly. We also provide excellent communication by phone and email prior to and during your stay.
Our rental rates are priced similarly to other higher-end Nova Scotia oceanfront homes. The cost and the minimum nights we require vary depending on the time of year and the duration of your stay. Click on "show additional rate details" (which is a link just below our calendar on the main page) to see how costs and minimum nights compare at various times of the year. The total rent we charge is in US dollars and includes all taxes. We recently reduced our rates by 20% to help compensate Canadians, who are the majority of our guests, cope with the rising US dollar. Like most Nova Scotia rentals, we rent from Saturday to Saturday. If staying for two weeks or more, the rate is US$100 less for each additional week. Pets are welcome for a non-refundable $100 fee.

About Mont Fennel
The Fennel Old House is owned by Mont and Mitzi Fennel, who have been coming to the islands every summer of their lives.

Why Mont Fennel chose Lunenburg
In 1956, our father stumbled upon the Fennel Old House on a boat tour of the islands, while visiting a friend. He bought it from a fishing family. Back then, it came with a large wharf, smokehouse, outhouse, one electric outlet and no running water! Over the years Dad fixed it up to become a wonderful second home for us. 10 years ago, my sister and I took over the property and fully renovated it. We have furnished it nicely, and have beautifully landscaped the large yard. The house, community, and area have become a fundamental part of our lives.
What makes this House unique
1) Beauty -- Unparalleled views of the ocean… Awesome picture-taking, both on our property and of the surrounding islands. Photograph or paint vistas, fishing boats, wharves, and colorful houses. 2) Romance -- Total privacy and relaxation. Enjoy the ambiance of 2 wood stoves, lounging on multiple decks, dinners in the gazebo or screen porch, walks on island paths, and more. 3) Children – We are a kid's paradise, with a large yard to play badminton, croquet, football, frisbee, wiffle ball, darts, and use our outdoor swing. Youngsters love to play and swim off our dock, climb around our waterfront, and explore the adjacent woods. We have books, board games, and some toys for tots. Also a mini-pool table and TV/VCR with a video library. 4) Adventure – Dozens of things to do on the popular South Shore mainland area (within 5 to 40 minutes), and quick access to beaches (5 to10 minutes). We provide guests with a guide with directions. 5) Community -- An unusually close group of families, both fishermen and summer residents, who live nearby and welcome visitors. 6) Boating – Our floating dock, attached to land-based ramp, is large enough for a low-drafting, 18-foot boat, or a couple of kayaks. Explore our cove and other island inlets or venture further around all of the LaHave Islands. Kayaks can be rented 10 minutes away. 7) Pets – We gladly accept them and have a huge yard for dogs to play in.

Beautiful, very private, loved the quiet, peaceful feel of the place
My sisters and I loved the spot, the pages of instructions were a little intimidating, but once you got there the beauty of the home and area made you completely relaxed, the check in time of 4 pm we found a little late but there was some leeway with that if you let Mont know ahead of time, also the checkout of 10 am a little early. Our only complaint with the decor was that there were no cozy chairs or a couch to snuggle in, other than that we loved the quaint, homey feel of the place and the compost toilet was not an issue, which we were leery of, it worked great, Thanks again to Mont for sharing his lovely home.
Great property but some unfortunate drawbacks.
The two major positive aspects of the Fennel Old House are the view and the location. From the back deck – where we thoroughly enjoyed the ritual of our morning coffee – there is an incredible, unobstructed view of a tranquil cove in which the colours change with the tide due to the underwater vegetation. The location is at the end of the road on Bell Island, and, while you can see another home tucked further back in the cove when you walk down to the dock, the setting is exceedingly private and quiet.
I enjoyed cycling from the house on Bell Island to Petite Riviere, Green Bay and over the mountain to Penz and La Havre where the local bakery must have a large magnet because my bicycle was always pulled to a stop out front! One evening, we took in a fine concert of folk music at The Old Confidence House at Riverport where a huge but gentle Newfoundland dog meandered through the audience obtaining affection. The La Have Islands Maritime Museum just down the road is a gem.
There are two negative aspects, however, to the Fennel Old House. The first is that none of the four bedrooms have adequate curtains. There are no blinds. The concern is not a lack of privacy but rather an absence of protection from the early morning light. It is fine if you are an early riser and wish to be awakened at dawn; however, after 6:00 A.M. each morning, the light can be bright and annoying.
The second is that after we booked the Fennel Old House, we were deluged with no less than 30 pages of detailed instructions with respect to the proper care of the house and its equipment from the beginning to the end of our stay. These instructions include: “Important Information about the House” (Over 60 do’s, don’ts and requests), “Care and Use of the Refrigerator” (2 do’s and don’ts), “Care and Use of the Dishwasher” (6 bullet points of do’s and don’ts), “Care, Use & Cleaning of the Electric Stove” (53 bullet points of do’s and don’ts), “Toilet/Composting System Instructions” (8 warnings in bold) and “Use & Care of the Soapstone Counters” (15 bullet points of do’s and don’ts). These meticulous instructions were accompanied by a total of 9 warnings that failure to follow them could result in the loss of all or some of our security deposit.
The kitchen renovations this spring – especially the new Brazilian soapstone counters and state-of-the-art electric stove and dishwasher - have possibly made the owner especially apprehensive about potential damage.
We’re glad our guests enjoyed our home. They wrote us “We’re delighted with the way you have restored and preserved this house, and it’s the most well-equipped kitchen that we’ve ever rented!”
However, we'll soon install shades so future guests aren’t woken by the sun.
We're sorry the information provided seemed a bit overwhelming. But after 20 years of sharing our home, we’ve heard from many guests who actually appreciate having thorough info. It helps them prepare, learning what we provide (for example, beach towels and life preservers), and answers typical questions which come up, helping eliminate the need to contact us after they’ve arrived.
What we provide is not a list of endless instructions. Much of the info includes things like the contact info for the local hospital, where to rent kayaks, or web links to the weather. Another document is 6 pages of “Things to Do in the Area,” which includes driving directions to each place. We do give detailed do’s, don’ts and instructions for certain things. Guests tell us it’s helpful to know where to find the iron and ironing board, have clear steps of how to use the satellite TV or the wood stoves. Having the vents in the wrong position could result in a smoky room or a fire that doesn’t burn well. Many previous guests have thanked us for this info.
We did just have the kitchen renovated with soapstone counters and brand new, high-end appliances. Both soapstone and the glass-top stove are prone to scratching, so we offer tips how to avoid that. We provide instructions how to use the digital appliances, which are not necessarily intuitive to someone using them for the first time. The dishwasher, for example, has buttons for Smart Auto, Sanitize, and Storm Wash and we explain what each means.
We’ve also had a few bad experiences renting to groups who’ve treated our home poorly, resulting in damage, and we want to avoid that. The house is not simply a cheap rental cottage we use for income. It’s a lovely home which we enjoy, too, and want treated with care. We take pride in the way we’ve furnished, decorated and equipped it, and have it kept clean for guests. Several people have told us that they welcome the clear notes about what could result in the loss of their deposit (such as bringing pets without letting us know, or smoking inside). The vast majority of guests do treat our home with respect, and partially because we set clear expectations, we’ve rarely kept anyone’s deposit.

Beautiful Cottage on the South Shore
I recently stayed at the Fennel house with my sister and mom for a south shore girls weekend. We loved the seclusion of the home, yet it was relatively central to many South Shore points of interest.
The cottage truly has an oceanfront cottage feel, from the decor to the age of the house and antique wood stoves. The house was more spacious than anticipated and the value was well worth it. The old family photo albums showing the upgrades to the house over the years was really neat.
The views are spectacular from inside the house and from the many decks /docks located on the exterior. We were there during the recent lunar eclipse and had some of the best views.
The cottage is very well stocked with cooking wares and your basic spices and everyday items. Far more stocked than any other vacation property.
I was a little nervous about the compost toilet, but none of us had any issues when we were there, and thought it was quite neat.
We strolled to Crescent beach and saw many deer along the way. The local inhabitants of the island are very friendly and welcoming. The Lahave Bakery does not disappoint and is a must!
The rental process was extremely smooth and Mont called to check in upon our arrival and departure to make sure everything was alright and that we enjoyed our stay. His response time to emails was within an hour or two. I would highly recommend this vacation rental for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and who are looking for a true cottage feel.
Beautiful view, quiet spot, charming house...
The house is old and still a bit rustic...yet charming, well maintained and immaculately clean. If you want to experience the sounds and smells of the ocean in a place where that;s all you can see from the kitchen window...this is the spot.
Home Away From Home
The Fennel House or I would prefer to call it the Fennel Home because that is what it is, a home.
I was looking for a place to bring my family where I could relax and enjoy them and reflect a bit and I found it in this home. This well maintained home is charming, inviting, with personnel touches throughout which reflect the Fennel family. It has everything you need right done to books to read and board games to play. The house itself gives you a feel of maritime past and the view and area is picture perfect.
I would suggest if you have access to a kayak it would be well worth bringing it along, the bay was very quiet when we were there and we saw a number of kayakers. If you don't have access to one you can rent one in the area although it is a little costly.
If you feel the need to wander this is the area to do it, there are many little hidden gems to discover wineries, beaches, ,marinas, as well as shopping, are all within 30 minutes. We visited several different areas Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, Crescent Beach, Halifax and more I only wish we had more time. If you don't know what to do or where to go Mont has an information binder that has a number of suggestions and he is only a phone call or email away if you should need help. He's very prompt in calling you back.
As you can tell I was very taken with the home and area and wouldn't hesitate to go back.
