The REAL DEAL

  • 5 of 5

My 11 yr. old daughter and I came for a 2 day getaway to the beautiful North Shore. Cab is everything a gracious host should be: warm, friendly, Helpful, accommodating and especially someone you can feel instantly comfortable talking with about anything.

It was a memorable and fun adventure and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to hang out within the Local community. Cab is all about community living and isn't that exactly what it is all about?? Living with 1 hand down (helping others up), and 1 hand up (others helping us up).

Wonderful experience all would grow by-

Hope you are able to take advantage of such a rare opportunity...

Like home...or maybe how you'd like home to be!

  • 5 of 5

We so much enjoyed our stay! We had our choice of 3 rooms in his comfy home, which is a single-level house raised up a floor, so you access it via outdoor stairs. On ground level is a spacious room, separate from the main house, accessed from outside and next to a neat outdoor shower and a composting toilet. We opted to stay inside the house, partly because we wanted to enjoy interacting with our host—and partly because we thought it might be cooler, as these rooms have ceiling fans. The 2 rooms inside are similar in size. We preferred the corner room for the airflow and the light, but opted for the room with the larger bed.

For those who may be unclear: This is Cab’s home and he shares it with others. He lives in the house and has his own bathroom, so you share the other bath with any other guests who may be staying there at the same time. He offers breakfast (and perhaps other meals) for an additional fee—something worth doing for at least one day of your stay for the unique experience of it. He’s cool with you putting things in the fridge and using the kitchen. For those who prefer the boring, sterile predictability of a Best Western, I urge you to expand your experience and stay here anyway.

The house has fun tile work on the floors and warm colors on the walls, piles of interesting books that Cab welcomes you to enjoy, and a lovely lanai that looks over his wonderful wild rambling jungle of a yard. The bed is comfortable, the shower is hot, the host is great. The location is walking distance to the natural foods market, a great café and nice wine shop, and TheBus stop—and with Cab’s loaner bikes you can get just about anywhere else you need or want to go. If we didn’t already have a rental car, we could easily have gotten by without it. We dug our experience here for so many reasons. Loved Haleiwa and neighboring Waialua, loved the vibe from Cab and the wonderful space he has created. Loved the bikeability of it all. I highly recommend enjoying Cab’s hospitality, making the time to hang out and chat and share a meal. He seems to truly enjoy sharing the bounty of his yard in a lovingly created meal (ours involved local fruit and a scramble with breadfruit and “Mexican spinach” and some other things I can’t recall), and has an abundance of local knowledge and suggestions about where to go and what to do. Engage him on local issues if it interests you. We had a great time and wish we could stay…thanks Cab!

Serenity, Beauty and Love

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Cab's place when I went to meet someone for surfing and to see if we hit it off. The place was so full of light and love. It was a perfect place to land and blossom in my new relationship! Yay! It was a home away from home with a full fridge of delicious, nutritious food. There was a stereo I could play CDs I had with me (nice). There was beautiful art on the walls and the outdoor porch was soooooo lovely to have my morning tea and paper out there. I sat out there and wrote in my journal. So good. I wanted to surf and Cab was encouraging. My partner is also a surfer and we all three hung out and just chatted at times. I didn't realize that Cab had been professional till I read other reviews - I guess he's humble that way. Also I didn't realize that Cab would have made me food! I was so intent on getting to the waves, I totally missed out! The only thing he made me was a little piece of heaven in a glass - a wonderful smoothie which started that day off on a good foot. I'm definitely keeping this address when I'm yearning for some North Shore surf.

Family adventure - pleasant surprise! :-)

  • 5 of 5

Off the beaten path in Haleiwa, Hawaii lies “Relax @ The Eco- B& Yoga/Foodie Retreat w/spa or Complete Healing Experience.” The owner and operator of this bed and breakfast is Cab Spates a former professional surfer raised in Virginia Beach area. Our family had never stay at a bed and breakfast before and both my wife and daughter had some apprehension about staying overnight, however that apprehension turned out to become a pleasant surprise. Cab delivers a unique sense of

serenity with all his guest. Personally coming from a high stress and fast pace way of life in the Midwest (United States), I was able to sense calmness from my entire family just being able to spend 6-8 hours of having general conversation (that is chilling) with Cab. Cab also is a substitute teacher and enjoys spending time with youths from K-12 grades. He respects all cultures and encourages his students to embrace (that is be proud of) the cultures that they are from. He has studied philosophies of the East (that is Japanese and Chinese) and Native American culture and has embraced their “Oneness” of coexisting with nature. He understands the value of harvesting and nurturing his garden and planet. He is an excellent chef and had us sampling sour sop, apple

bananas, ice cream bananas, and many more exotic fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Before bed he had us making our own shampoo. For breakfast he made smoothies, an omelette, and baked coconut. Both of my children Cassandra (17) and Joshua (20) loved their brief time spent with Cab.

Joshua would love to live with Cab. Cab has many friends so he is well connected to many outfitters (such as surfing lessons etc.) and has a wealth of information about the North Shore. Cab is a gem on the North Shore waiting to be discovered for those that are willing to leave the beaten path. My only regret is not being able to spend a few more days with my family at Relax @ The Eco- B& Yoga/Foodie Retreat w/spa.

Didn't actually stay but got bit up by mosquitos in the 20 minutes we spent there.

  • 2 of 5

Maybe it's great, maybe it's safe but my friends and I opted out of staying there after we visited and didn't feel safe in that neighborhood and we got eaten alive by mosquitos. The studio which was very cute was located under the house but there were no locks. I didn't notice any light or electricty in that part either. There was free access to a bathroom, kitchen, living room and balcony upstairs. There was also an outdoor shower with huge gaping holes for the not so shy. The place was surrounded by plants of all sorts. The driveway was a little sketchy as there is only one way in and then you have to back out up a hill. Allow at least 5 minutes for that process!
