Why Tom & Theresa Gordy chose Bentonville

Like most log cabins, River Woods was a realization of childhood dreams. After all, who hasn't at one time in their life wanted to live in a log cabin?

The dream, long slumbering underneath years of stress and "priorities", came alive in October 2004 when we first drove across the Shenandoah River to view the hardwood and pine-covered 5.88 acres that is now home to River Woods. Driving up to the property was like in the 1988 movie Funny Farm, starring Chevy Chase - deer, turkeys, and pileated woodpeckers appearing as if cued by some hidden director. Fall leaves were in full display of color, and no noise could be heard except for the rustling of drying leaves driven by cool gentle breezes. However, this was no choreographed production, only nature greeting its soon-to-be new neighbors. That day, that moment, began a four-year journey of planning, designing and building - making a dream come true.

What makes this cabin unique

In Nature, Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "In the woods, we return to reason and faith." And that has become the mission of River Woods - to help people find the quietness in which to reflect on the things that matter most in life.

Since its completion in the summer of 2008, River Woods has become a place to relax and reflect upon God's wonderful creation. It has served as a romantic getaway for many couples as well as the base camp for adventure vacations of hiking, canoeing and tubing, mountain biking, horseback riding and marathon running. It has become a second home for families who need an escape from the rat race of our nation's capital.

It has served as a place for rest and recuperation for war-weary service members visiting their families while on leave from operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. And it has been a place of solace for families grieving the loss of a loved one.

Music groups and writers have used River Woods and the beautiful natural surroundings as a place of inspiration for their songs, prose and poetry.

River Woods has served to reunite geopraphically-dispersed high school and college friends and as a place of celebration for engagements, weddings and birthdays.

As owners of River Woods, we have greatly enjoyed knowing that our second home has brought joy to so many and look forward to hearing from future guests on what River Woods has meant to them.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We're home again, after a great few days. You really have created something very special out there. Everything was clean and in perfect order. Thanks again. All the arrangements worked great, and a few peaceful days in the woods were just what I needed.

Excellent Getaway

  • 5 of 5

There were 6 of us - 3 adults and 3 kids. We loved the house, the outside woods, the firepit we used for smores every night and a very easy drive to a variety of attractions. Looking forward to returning at some point in the future. Fully recommend.

Great home, Nice escape

  • 5 of 5

Well maintained, clean and fun. It is a bit of a trek to find, but the peace and quiet once you arrive are worth the effort! We based out of this home for four days of visits to wineries, Front Royal and Winchester.

Beautiful house & property

  • 5 of 5

This house was exactly what we were looking for -- beautifully maintained and very comfortable, yet in a rustic setting far from the bustle of normal life. We spent our days hiking in Shenandoah National Park, exploring the property and playing in the "discovery house" in the backyard with our 3 year old, and going to Luray Caverns. We ate every meal in the house (stocked up on food near DC... doesn't appear to be much in the area) and got lucky with a couple of warm days that allowed us to eat outside on the deck overlooking the foliage. We are planning to return next year!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

Great long weekend with the family. House is beautiful, clean, organized (and labeled!), rustic with luxury, and comfortable. The owners left nothing untouched. The master suite with see through fireplace is a great feature. We visited Luray Caverns, Cooter's Place (Dukes of Hazzard was my childhood), apple picking, pumpkin patch and lots of good restaurants. Kids loved the open spaces to run and we roasted marshmallows in the fire pit. Thanks for a great getaway!

Lovely retreat

  • 4 of 5

The house is lovely and quite secluded. Our party of three couples really enjoyed the location and the amenities. The kitchen is great to cook in, very well provisioned. The hammock on the deck was utilized as well. The entire house clean and lovely. The road in was a bit difficult to navigate at night during a major thunderstorm. A lot of water on the road with areas that were washed over with rocks. Well worth the trip. Kayaked with the Downriver canoe company which is very close by.
