Your own secluded beach awaits on the lush East end of Moloka'i.
Here, on the most Hawaiian island, the stress and worries of the modern world seem to wash away with each new tide.
Here is Hawai'i as it once was. Peaceful, relaxed and beautiful. The Hawai'i of 50 years ago.
Come! Let the magic of the warm Pacific and this wonderful island soothe your soul.
Come! Enjoy the serenity of Kainalu.
Our vacation home is situated right at the water's edge and has its own secluded beach. The 2 bedroom, one bath designs provide panoramic vistas of the islands of Maui, Lana'i and Kaho'olawe. Perfect vantage points for whale watching from December through April.
The Pauwalu house is at beach level and is probably the better choice for families with small children or those with special access needs. Sleeps four comfortably with queen bed in the master bedroom and 2 twin beds in the second bedroom.
Safe swimming and snorkeling can be enjoyed year-round here or at other locations within a mile of the cottages.

We loved the dunbar beachfront cottages on the east side of Molokai - it had everything we needed for this trip; we loved staying right on the ocean - a unique place on the Hawaiian Islands
This place is amazing! Leslie thank you so much for the perfect stay on Molokai! We truly enjoyed every minute, mahalo
So glad you enjoyed yourselves. Thanks for writing.
We had fun!
We rented this cottage and my parents did the other. We enjoyed the view...wonderful! The cottages were simple, and yet comfortable and calming. I would say that in both cottages we had so many ants, and in my parents cottage it looked like a lot of termites. Maybe it is was time for the exterminator. However, again, the view was lovely in both and they were both clean.
We enjoyed Molokai and had a great time. However, having been to Molokai many years ago, it was a bit sad to see it in the state is is now. Many of the buildings are run down and that is not the way it was before.
From the various properties that we saw on Molokai at the same price, the Dunbar Cottages are the best value, to be sure.
Hi Karrie, I am so sorry for your ant issue. I wish you had called us right away. The guests who came after you did and we had the exterminator the next day. He said the ants were a result of our unusually rainy weather. They were coming from outside, attracted by the cottage lights. I hope the rest of your stay was enjoyable and really apologize for any inconvenience the ants caused. Kip and I do try to be active owners/managers and take care of problems as soon as we can.
Aloha, Leslie Dunbar
We stayed in the Pauwalu cottage for 3 nights. The sunrise from the private beach is breathtaking. The little crabs are entertaining and we were the only two people in sight. The afternoons on the private beach were very relaxing.
I had a minor accident on a hike and called the owner for advice on a doctor. She called me back immediately with some recommendations. Even though it was in the evening, she didn't seem bothered and was eager to help and make my stay a good one.
The cottage was a good size and had plenty of amenities. The bed was a little uncomfortable and we had to use the two pillows from the spare bedroom. Luckily, there were just two of us. It would have been nice to have some extra pillows, as there were only 4 total and they were a little flat.
I would definitely stay at this cottage again (and request extra pillows next time).
Hi Cassie, I was wondering about you and how your injury was. I hope it all worked out okay. I apologize for the bed. It is a relatively new queen purchased in 2014. Did you find it too soft or too hard? Thanks for the tip about the pillows. I will replace them today.
Our stay for over a week at the Pauwalu Cottage was fantastic. The cottage was a perfect size for two, isolated, private, and furnishing its own beach. The views from the balcony were spectacular. We ate in every night and had no trouble finding the necessary pots, pans, utensils, and dishes - the house was well stocked. Of course, the beauty of Molokai and the charming people we met added immensely to the experience. We would highly recommend this property for adults. It was a most memorable time, and we can't wait to return.
Treat yourself to a Home in Paradise
We just finished a relatively short (4-night) visit to Molokai, staying only at the Pauwalu Cottage. It was remarkable and lovely; we will definitely stay again next time we visit.
The house itself was very clean, looked just like the pictures, and was well stocked with necessities (utensils and kitchen gadgets, briquet bbq, towels, paper towels, etc.). We followed the advice and did some shopping on the way from the airport -- although mostly we ate out. (This is Molokai, so that means plate lunch or choosing from a very few, very casual restaurants "in town" (Kaunakakai); so have realistic expectations.) There is no AC but the breeze and the fans were consistent and the screens worked great (no mosquitos got in -- but take a little mosquito repellant for the island; it would have been nice for the outdoor restaurants), so it was not missed. Booking was really easy and communication was prompt and friendly.
The house is out towards the east end of the island and it's very comfortable (and 25 minutes from any dinner place), so grab stuff for one or more dinners at the house. Each morning and evening we spent at least an hour watching the waves and the ocean and reading on the lanai, and we would have stayed even more if we had planned groceries better. The deck and sunsets were my favorite things (and there was a lot to love from the house and the island).
A note about the island: we loved Molokai and found folks to be very friendly when we took the time to chat but it is a somewhat different kind of vacation: slower, less posh, less convenient, more independent, etc. If that appeals, you will LOVE it and this cottage (and the other which is 2 minutes away and looked lovely too) is a perfect place. Enjoy.
The Dunbar Beachfront Cottages are located in Kainalu, Molokai on the east end of the island. They are about 18 miles and a half hour's drive east of the main town of Kaunakakai. The cottages are a quarter of a mile apart with nothing between them but ocean and shoreline.
