About Maren Orion

Aloha! My husband, Mose, and I have lived on Kaua`i since 2003. We moved here from Paonia, Colorado. We had been visiting here since the early 80`s.

We love the island, the diversity of people and the culture. We have created this vacation home to offer visitors the opportunity to experience the magic of Kaua`i.

Mose and I are volunteers at KKCR, Kaua`i's Community Radio Station. You can tune in at 90.9 FM or catch us streaming on the web at kkcr.org.. Hope you'll listen in while on the island. It's also a great place to catch Hawai`ian Music in the mornings between 7-11 AM.

We are at your service while you stay at Hale Ho`opio, don't hesitate to call us with any questions or concerns...

Maren Orion purchased this house in 2005

Why Maren Orion chose North Shore

We looked at many properties to buy for our vacation rental, but this one stood out because of the wonderful views of Namolokama Mountain and the beautiful waterfalls. Truly, the view is so spectacular, you could sit and watch it all day long as it changes with the shifting light and clouds! Princeville is a lovely town, designed with walking and biking trails, so no need to drive everywhere. Many fabulous adventures are within walking distance. Princeville, unlike many other locations, is an area that is approved by the county for vacation rentals on Kaua'i.

What makes this house unique

Besides the amazing views, the house is well located in a quiet area of Princeville. You are able to walk to many beautiful spots, enjoy the bars and restaurants and spas of the nearby resorts...and it is just a short drive to the Princeville Shopping Center...you could walk there if you wanted to. Within a 10 minute drive, there are more beautiful sights than it is possible to mention in the space allowed. We are more than happy to share some of our favorites with you when you make your booking or during your stay.

A "Nani" place - couldn't ask for anything more.

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Hale Ho'opio in February 2017 with my two young adult children. The house is situated in a neighbourhood like setting but you would never know it given all the lush vegetation surrounding it. We felt like we had our own private piece of paradise. Our favourite parts of the home (1) the view from the deck. Having breakfast on the deck viewing the mountain was an amazing - almost spiritual - way to start each day. (2) the "day" bed in the Lanai. We would flip a coin every night to see who had the privilege of sleeping outside. Hearing the surf soothe you to sleep at night was a joy (it also has an alarm clock that will wake you at dawn each morning!). (3) the large selection of books - several guide books helped us immensely during our stay. There were also a number of interesting books that give you a good sense of Hawai'ian culture and a particular book that I was drawn to that really spoke to me (4) avocado and orange tree! We were fortunate to stay when both trees were bearing their fruit - ono! (5) the large counter in the kitchen made it enjoyable to prepare meals and socialize all at the same time. (6) the washer and dryer in the garage allowed us to pack light and still be socially presentable as we did a load of laundry half way through the trip (7) the extras - snorkels, boogie board, and beach chairs for your use at the beach during your stay.

We couldn't have asked for anything more - for us it was perfect.

I can't finish my review without saying a few words about Kaua'i. This is by far the most beautiful place on earth I have ever laid eyes on. Not only is the scenery amazing but Kaua'i still has its quaint, friendly and laid back culture. Such a beautiful island.

We wouldn't hesitate for a second to come back to Kaua'i and stay at Hale Ho'opio again in the future.

Shangri-La!

  • 5 of 5

We fear staying in Princeville because we might end up in a residential area with views of the neighbors. We prefer private settings. Though this place has a caretaker on site we never saw him and we were there 2 1/2 weeks (he works locally and was not home much). It is in a residential neighborhood but you'd never know it. It's at the back of a culdesac at the edge of development with a tunnel of jungle as the driveway entrance. The whole house is upstairs which sticks up out of the jungle with fantastic views of the mountains of Bali Hai with several waterfalls and an old world feeling of ancient Hawai'i. Seriously, you'd have no idea that all the convenience of Princeville's upper crust persona of golf courses, good stores and hotel dining was within minutes of your perch in Paradise. Maren, the owner, is gracious and bends over backwards to accommodate guests. Geckos, an occasional mosquito, orange tree, avocado and lemon add to the charm. And this place is very reasonable considering how nice Princeville is. We've stayed in Princeville houses that are overlooking fairways and ocean views but this pretty much took the cake for killer views. It had everything you could imagine in the kitchen appliances plus spices, coffee , tea, BOOZE!, And everything imaginable that folks had left behind that was non-perishable. So check that out before you go to the store which is well stocked but not cheap. There was even real maple syrup! The owners love this place and you can tell. We would not hesitate to recommend it to all.

Best location on island

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I and my parents stayed at Maren's place for 2 weeks while visiting Kauai. We couldn't have picked a better location. The lush surroundings where a joy to wake up to every morning and come home to in the evenings. Perfect location for all the north shore activities with Hanalei Bay within 10-15 min drive and a handful of other beaches close by. Princeville itself was fun to walk through as well and we enjoyed relaxing at Princeville Center over coffee/snacks.

The south shore is ~1h away (with Waimea Canyon state park a 1.5 drive away), so basically reachable even for day trips. If your preference is to have a home in a good location as a base for all activities and you don't mind travelling a bit this place is definitely for you.

The house itself inside had everything we needed. The kitchen could use some updating (more specifically the pots/pans, utensils etc) but we were still able to make do when cooking meals in.

A few suggestions on activities:

- Napali Coast and Waimea Canyon are great to see from various vantage points. Do some hiking as nothing will immerse you in this beauty as well as being in such close contact to the land. The most enjoyable hikes were: Canyon Trail and Kalalau Trail (to Hanakapiai Falls only).

- The helicopter tour is well worth the money! We went with the Blue Hawaiian company and greatly enjoyed the ride. The specialized helicopters with extra windows gave a great panoramic view. Visit Costco as at the time they had $80 for $100 vouchers for sale.

- Great coffee at Small Town Coffee truck near Kapaa.

- Best dinner was The Bistro in Kilauea

- Waves at the beach on south shore near Kekaha (across Waimea Canyon park road entrance) are worth visiting once to see!

Wow...typing this out got me thinking. Maybe I should book again! Do it and I know you'll enjoy as much as we did.

Don't Hesitate.........

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely home for 1 full week and were married on the island the following week on the south shore. Our first morning we were lucky enough to wake up to a double rainbow! That set the tone for our wonderful week on the north shore. I must say that the reviews I read on this house lured me in. Everything I read was true and then some. Every morning at 4:50 am we would hear the roosters crow followed by the beautiful sound of this unique bird(not sure of its name) and usually the sound of a light rain falling on the leaves....after a day of rain, the waterfalls suddenly appeared cascading down the mountains....so very beautiful. The house is very beautiful, tastefully decorated, comfortable beds, beamed ceilings, ceiling fans, and a lovely cross breeze at night to fall asleep to....great kitchen to prepare meals and that amazing porch with the daybed to relax on....and of course that beautiful view of the mountains!!.....don't hesitate to book this beautiful rental home! Maren was very professional, personable and warm. She answered all my emails right away and made me feel comfortable asking her anything. Robert was helpful and friendly as well. "Mahalo" to both of you for your hospitality that also included beautiful tropical flowers on the kitchen counter, fresh organic greens and mangoes upon our arrival! We loved our stay!

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

Hale Ho'opio is an amazing place of extraordinary beauty, serenity, and comfort, providing great relaxation and sanctuary for body and soul. It is elegantly appointed with wide open spaces and stunning panoramic views of the mountains. The views from the living room, screen porch, and lanai are so jawdroppingly beautiful that you could just sit all day and be bathed in the glory of nature without even going outside. The layout is very conveniently designed, so that there is easy access to everything you need. There is plenty of ventilation from ceiling fans in almost every room and screen doors to the spacious lanai and the delightful screen porch.

I have stayed here every year for the past four summers and wish I could live here year round. It is truly my home away from home. Maren is an absolute pleasure to deal with, very responsive and caring to her repeat clientele, always welcoming me back with fresh bouquets of flowers and special treats from the garden. The property manager is terrific, incredibly kind, helpful, and always willing to be of service, and the home and grounds are maintained in pristine condition.

This is truly a heavenly place situated in its own private corner of paradise, the north shore of Kauai, one of the most beautiful and sacred sites in the world. The breathtaking splendor of Na Pali, Ke'e Beach, Hanalei Bay, and Anini is just literally minutes away.
