not quite as advertised

  • 3 of 5

My definition of secluded must not be the same as the owner's. The property is surrounded by other houses, 3 directly across the small lane. From inside the house you can hear people talking in their driveways. There actually was a lot of noise - from neighbors and the house itself. The house is rustic and quaint. It also is in serious disrepair and was not particularly clean. The ceilings are obviously water damaged, moldy and look like they are going to fall in. There were cobwebs inside the dish cupboard and the lampshades and mold in and around the shower. We questioned what the $50 cleaning fee covered. We arrived in the dark & rain and the front steps were quite hazardous, broken & slippery and not well lit. The other concern was the bathroom being downstairs and the bedrooms upstairs, the very narrow stairway was a challenge in the middle of the night. We also were not able to locate any smoke alarms on the premise which was a concern because of the age of the house and the need to use space heaters to heat the downstairs. We say all this to help others be more informed about what the place is really like. In general, once we got past the afore mentioned issues, we enjoyed ourselves and appreciated the charm of the cabin.

Not as advertised. Moisture content made health concern.

  • 1 of 5

With no ill will towards Kate, we have a duty to be honest in our review towards encouraging trust and understanding in the VRBO community. There were enough issues that we chose not to occupy the unit.

We arrived after dark, to find the house across the street from the river, not on the river. The stone stairway to get to the main door was narrow and steep, with uneven (one near 1.5 to 2 feet high by estimate) and irregular steps, and one of those broken, creating scary potential for a fall with a rough landing.

The first floor, to include the bathroom and kitchen, were mostly clean and acceptable.

The second floor, where the bedroom, and access to the sleeping loft, and the main living space all are, was a different situation. There were multiple specimens of outdoor plants growing into the house through the walls, there were spider webs with live arachnids in the bedroom and at the top of the ladder to get to the loft. The humidity was tangibly thick. There was an odor of mildew. We found mold on a leather chair. The spiders grossed us out, but the mold and mildew gave us cause for respiratory health concern.

Someone had been there earlier to put some fresh flowers in the house, yet the air conditioner was left off - when it could have been running to help dehumidify the place.

We would not recommend this rental to others.

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I truly enjoyed my stay in the little cabin. It was so peaceful and the owner worked to meet all my needs. It is a very quiet area not to far away from town. I was in Lexington for the three day event and it seemed that anywhere I wanted to go was 20 minute or less drive. I found that very good. The evenings were so peaceful to sit in the log sitting room with a glass of wine. I would consider staying there again on my next visit.
