About Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager
I grew up in New Zealand, I lived in Vail Colorado for over 20 years teaching skiing and developing a unique program Dynamic Skiing for Life. My husband and I started coming to Maui to windsurf, surf and scuba dive in the 80s as a perfect way to continue our love of the outdoors but this time we were playing in the ocean instead of on the mountains. We fell in love with Maui and the north shore and we bought our property in the early 90s. With a lot of love and family help we created the Menehune Cottage for vacation rental from the original Hawaiian home on this property. We love the location which is close to everything we love to do and we have enjoyed sharing this with our guests. Maui is a special place with its mountains, ocean, rainbows, soft air, music and the people. We have made this our home and now instead we visit the mountains for a little skiing, but we always return home.
Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager purchased this Cottage in 1993
Why Anne Barber - Property/Reservation Manager chose Paia
3 mins walk to the beach, we can rig on the lawn and windsurf at the Kuau channel, close to everything we love and need - Paia is less than 5 mins away, also Baldwin beach for early morning runs and a couple of minutes from Hookipa beach - it is convenient and delightful

Charming cottage in such a cool area!
We had a great time staying at this Paia cottage! It was conveniently located for all of our adventures at the beginning of our trip including the sunrise bike ride down Haleakala, beach and snorkel day, and the Road to Hana! All of the local recommendations were very helpful as well. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
My friend and I LOVED it here
The place is tres cute and comfortable, private, quiet, clean, and well-stocked with the things you'll need. The fruit and chips on the table were a nice touch. Communication with the property manager was clear and timely. We met the owner who also lives on the property; she was personable -- warm and welcoming. We encountered the requisite wildlife in the place -- geckos in the shower, some insects that found their way in -- but nothing out of the ordinary for the tropics, and nothing to suggest we should question the cleanliness of the place. The fans kept the place comfortable during our stay. We enjoyed the graveyard across the fence. We also frequented Hookipa Beach and found literally dozens of sea turtles sunning themselves there - mid to late August, they aren't there all year. The Turtle Keepers were there, too, protecting and explaining. We also frequented Mama's Fish House, which is very close by -- no table reservations for weeks, but we enjoyed exquisite food and drinks, service to write home about, and the most beautiful view during the day at the back bar. This location also enabled us to spend pent 3 days traveling and perusing the Road to Hana, which starts just south of Pa'ia, getting acquainted with its nooks and crannies, taking turns being a passenger so we could immerse ourselves in the beauty. This home base was perfect for the trip we wanted to take.
Great place in a great location
We really enjoyed our experience staying in this cottage. It was conveniently located, clean, quiet, and peaceful. Instructions were clear and having laundry on site was great. We really appreciated the beach towels and supplies! It does get hot during the day so be sure to use the fan (it was hotter inside than outside). Would stay again!
Perfect getaway spot!
We found the Menehune Cottage on VRBO when looking for a small place for a long weekend in Maui. Anne who is the property manager was great to work with and kept up communication until we landed. Margaret and her husband, who own the property, were around and great to chat with about the history of the house and cottage. The spot was perfect and we couldn't have been happier. The cottage was clean and comfy and even though there wasn't any A/C we were never there during the day and found the house cooled off nicely at night for sleeping. We headed towards Hana easily one day and over to Makena Beach for snorkeling the next. Pa'ia is a great little town with good eats and cute beachy shopping. The general store on the corner by the house had the BEST smoothies and breakfast items. Best of all Mama's and the beach were a very short walk from the cottage. We were already talking about our next stay before we even got to the airport. Thanks for a great weekend stay and we will definitely be back!!
Sweetest spot in Maui
We stayed in this cottage for just a weekend before heading over to West Maui, but I wish we had stayed longer! It was a lovely little spot, off the beaten path for sure but still close to the things to which you'd want to be close. "Mama's Beach" was less than a 5-minute stroll away, through a cute little neighborhood, and it was a lovely spot for playing in the waves or just watching the ocean do its thing. Mama's Fish House is right there too, for lovers of fine seafood, though we do the vegetarian thing and went into Paia for great veg food at Flatbread (amazing pizzas) and Cafe des Amis (awesome crepes and Indian food). As for the cottage itself? Totally adorable, very comfortable, and you really feel like you're in your own little paradise. The secluded lanai was wonderful for morning tea to the sounds of birds of all kinds (including chickens). Best gem of all is the outdoor shower - if you've never tried one you don't know what you're missing and this one even has heated water! A very charming and relaxing spot; we were sad to go, and will love to come back again one day soon!
Lovely quiet cottage
My wife and I stayed here for a week and loved it. We prefer to be away from the typical tourist crowds and this was perfect. Short walk to a beach - we had to step around a green turtle who wanted to use the beach access path one day! Owner is nearby and eager to help, while not hovering or intruding. Pa'ia is a little eclectic but a great little town with great food and shopping. We felt the easy drives to Kahului or Kihei or Maalea were far enough but not too far. You are right on the Road to Hana so it is easy to get an early start. Other beaches are nearby. Loved hearing the surf from the cottage, and the beds were quite comfortable. Everything we needed was there.
Other Activities: water sports, windsurfing, kiting, surfing, snorkeling, beaches, scenic drives, cycling, hiking, Haleakala National Park, luaus, Hawaiian culture, art galleries
