About Patricia Ward

We live in Virginia but come to Maine whenever we can.

Patricia Ward purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Patricia Ward chose Maine

The property has been in the family for years. Full of memories and memorabilia. The house is large and the spaces flexible to accomodate all ages. The downstairs master suite is large enough for a family. And one family put a crib in the walk-in closet and made it the nursery. The master suite is also very comfortable for older guests with mobility issues.

What makes this cottage unique

On the ocean. Perennial garden for cutting flowers. Enlarged front porch with a swing. Five acres of meadow and woods behind the house. Great birding and walking trail. Front lawn for children's games.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Weather: A few nice days and a few cool rainy days.

Favorite adventures: Whale Watch! We saw many Minke whales, seals, porpoises and even a young white tipped shark! We loved kayaking in the harbor in the evening. We even had a seal pop up and check us out. That was really amazing. Day trips to Bath, Wiscasset, & Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. A few of us dropped quite a few dollars at Abacus in Boothbay Harbor and Showcase Antiques Gallery in Wiscasset.

Favorite restaurants: We didn't eat out much. The ice cream at the ice cream factory was yummy. The candy shop was good, too.

Other thoughts: Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. The view is amazing. Very, very, very wonderful sunset 8/13

August 2015 family vacation and celebration

  • 5 of 5

This is an outstanding Maine cottage in beautiful Boothbay Harbor. It is spacious, very well equipped and appointed, has a fantastic view of the outer harbor and all of the boating activity, clean and well maintained, has a large lawn areas in both the front and back, beautiful gardens, and a front porch that is a focal point for family gathering and relaxation. The location is idea as it is in a quiet area away from touristy area, yet convenient for everyone's interests.

We are a couple in our early 70's who shared the cottage with two or our married sons and their families (10 of us in total). Staying in a nearby cottage were two other sons and their families (8 in total), so for many afternoons and evening we had 18 of us gathered at this wonderful cottage.

The kitchen is very large (4 or 5 cooks could work here without being in the way of each other) with a spacious center island, 2 sinks, 2 ovens, and every small appliance and piece of kitchen equipment a large family would need.

The great room is just that, "GREAT". Two long sofas and several chairs at one end gathered around a beautiful fireplace and entertainment center and the other end had two dining tables (we put these together so that we could accommodate all 18 of our family), a desk, sideboard, and a beautiful old church pew that would seat 10 people! One evening we hired a caterer who turned this space into a wonderful place for our 50th wedding anniversary celebration!

The owners of this property are wonderful and very accommodating -- they love this place and want their quests to love it as well.

While there is little reason to leave this property when visiting, it should be noted that there is a lot to do in and around the immediate area: Boothbay Harbor village is a 5 minute drive from the cottage and offers many restaurants, shops, boat tours, rental kayaks, and entertainment; within a 10 - 15 minute drive you can visit a wonderful aquarium, a narrow gauge railroad & antique auto museum (kids love the train ride!), beautiful Southport Island, the Botanical Gardens (a real gem -- don't overlook this first class attraction for all ages!) and more coastal scenery at Ocean Point.

Relaxing and uncomplicated getaway cottage

  • 5 of 5

Staying at the cottage with friends was serene. There is plenty of space for privacy, as well as areas for gathering. The porch is perfect, surrounded by a wonderful garden and ideal view of the bay. The road and surroundings are quiet yet the house is within a comfortable walking distance into town. The interior fireplace is cozy with a wonderful view. The bedrooms, baths and common areas are clean, smartly decorated and practical. The kitchen is enormous - it's the real deal for guests who plan to stay inside for some meals.

Favorite outings and events included the breathtaking botanical gardens, homemade ice cream shop (we drove to it, not located in town), the Windjammer boat race with parade, exploring the local artisan shops, sitting on the large rocks at the foot of the cottage sipping wine and talking with my friend.

This is truly a special place, the cottage and the area. The cottage owner make us feel very welcome and cared for during our stay. I would highly recommend staying in the large blue cottage on the waterfront during your time in Maine.

Lobster!

  • 5 of 5

Return stay at Big Blue. Delightful weather, friends and food - lobster three times! Relaxing time spent reading, figuring out jigsaw puzzles, exploring area, and eating. Well stocked kitchen, large living rooms, great front porch for viewing water activities, cocktails, and general idling. Trip to Rockland to Farnsworth Museum. Very comfortable home and cottage. Hope to come again.

Wonderful charming home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at this home. It was so relaxing to put together puzzles and build a fairy house. The home is very large so there is lots of space for the family to spread out. We all enjoyed cooking together in the large homey kitchen which was very well stocked. We sat out on the front porch and watched the stars at night. It was so pretty to just sit in any of the rooms and watch the sail boats go by and hear the lobster boats go out in the morning.

Authentic Maine Vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful place. My wife and I have been there twice: Once as part of a reunion with old friends, and this summer, our two grown children, their significant others and our two grandchildren joined us for a delightful week.. The house (and the location) were perfect for both. The house is roomy and comfortable. A large kitchen where everybody can gather and cook and kibitz. Two fireplaces for those cool Maine nights. Big ol' front porch for afternoon cocktails and views of the sailboats and ferries on the bay. A large front lawn for playing catch and bocce ball. Large picture windows in the bedrooms allow you to wake up early in the morning with a panoramic view of lobstermen pulling up their traps. Or close the drapes and sleep til noon. Boothbay Harbor is a delightful town Lots of restaurants and bakeries and ice cream parlors and coffee shops. Tour boats leave from the piers for all sorts of scenic voyages and adventures. This summer, we went to a clambake on Cabbage Island. Don't miss it. Last summer we took the boat ride to Monhegan Island, ten miles off the coast -- a beautiful summer artists colony. There are so many things left that we didn't do, we want to go back and stay in that same wonderful house to enjoy more of the attractions and venues that provide for a memorable Maine vacation.
