Property description

Our Amelia Island cottage was constructed more than 100 years ago. Modernization has not diminished it"s charm. Perched on a corner lot in the middle of a welcoming neighborhood, our much loved cottage offers a fenced yard, hot water outdoor shower, front 'visiting porch' with rockers and a secluded back deck offering privacy for introspective calm (or an opportunity to turn on the party lights and giggle).
Inside is cozy and comfortable and easy to simply "Be".
* 12 foot ceilings
* huge soaking bathtub
* vintage decor mixed with island antiques
* shelves of books, games and puzzles complete with a story time or daydreaming nook with western light.
* completely furnished kitchen with shrimp pot and plenty of chef's accessories
* split bedrooms which offer privacy and quiet
* efficient ceiling fans in every room
* a small fireplace for the cooler months.
Carriage horses pass the cottage daily on their way to and from work. Each horse has his own distinctive personality and if you Hurry! you might get to put a peppermint or carrot into Boomer's big soft muzzle on his way Home from town. ( On his way to work, Cindy prefers that he not stop.)

Owner info

Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I fell in love with Amelia Island's 'old Florida' feel and ambiance many years ago. So many of our friends and family have enjoyed their yearly 'island breaks' here. The large painting in the front bedroom is from John; the stained glass window in the back hallway was made by Lisa; special framed drawings by Oman and by Lee and by Summer and various seashell and sharks teeth collections are scattered about. Our friends, family and neighbors have married here, celebrated yearly anniversary dates, planted special native plantings and added much to the cottage in so many many ways. Our VRBO renters often return yearly as well and become somewhat like family. It is....magical. You just have to Go to Know.

Why the Owner Chose Fernandina Beach, FL, USA:
I inherited this sweet cottage from a dear friend who lived on and loved Amelia Island for many years. She was a passionate and strong advocate for much of the Greenway Development as well as a champion for shelter animals, wildlife and native species habitat protection. Her name is Susan Laird. There is a billboard constructed in her honor near the coastal access to Eagan's Creek Greenway. Susan taught me how to Love an Island.

The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
The Saturday morning Farmer's Market is a Must...as are daily visits to the absolute BEST Dog Park ever. The Amelia Island Museum of History is around the corner with it's wealth of interesting island artifacts (and just plain facts). Pajama Dave's boat trip from the marina over to Cumberland Island is always a treat. Amazingly, there are three well established Community Theatre Groups on this little island as well. Side streets are filled with art galleries, locally owned restaurants, book shops, bakeries and antique dealers. Any style of 'loafering' you like is available. Miles of beaches line the island...some are provided with public services like restrooms and restaurants while other sandy stretches are quite isolated and wild. Vehicle travel is allowed on some. Main Beach is just across the island from our cottage, about one and a half miles (with a bike lane available). My favorite bit of shoreline is the northern end bordering Fort Clinch (pssst...that is where the most shark's teeth are to be found.) The island has an active wildlife preservation group and there are many activities sponsored both on the island as well as at nearby state parks. Sea turtles nest here and those who had need of rehabilitation are released here from the Georgia Turtle Rescue group. We all line up and watch as their handlers place them gently back into the ocean. Right whales use the waters off the island for calving during the spring months. Keep an eye peeled as 2 of my friends have seen them breech quite close in to shore. Sunsets at the marina are a stroll away. We have peeked in on fancy sailing ships from all around the world there. The same marina houses an excellent fresh fish shop--buy fresh local catch just off the boat. T Ray's gas station on 8th St has once again won a national award for it's fare. T Ray now just has the restaurant (breakfast and lunch only) as he shut down the working gas pumps 2 years ago.
