About the property

Step away from the pressures of everyday life and connect with the rhythm of the sea!

Casita de Lunes is located on the stretch of beach known as 'roosterfish alley' in a new, sparsely populated gated community. Once standing alone with no other homes in sight, there are now homes flanking either side of our casita but the uninterrupted beach remains the same. The village of La Ribera is 10 minutes away by car and Los Barriles, with it's many shops and restaurants, is 30 minutes away.

Baja California Sur is a peninsula separated from mainland Mexico by the Sea of Cortez. This gives it a distinctive 'island' feel. Baja is often called 'the other Mexico'. Our home is located near the tip of the peninsula, on the Sea of Cortez side (also known as the east cape). We are a one hour drive north from the Los Cabos International Airport and far removed from the hussle and glitz of Cabo San Lucas.

This is where the white sand desert meets the unbelievable aqua-marine blue of the ocean. John Stienbeck wrote about the teaming marine life here in his famous work 'Log From The Sea Of Cortez'. Imagine miles of sandy beach where turtles nest. Imagine an endless sea perfect for swimming. Imagine fish jumping, frigit birds soaring, pelicans feeding. Walk the beach fly fishing or casting for rooster fish, sierra and dorado. Use the kyaks provided or hire a local guide and ponga from nearby La Ribera for a day on the sea. In winter, this coast is internationally acclaimed for it's windsurfing. The coral reef of nearby Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park offers some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling to be found anywhere in the world. This is a place where you could pass days marveling at nature and never stray more than a few steps from the house... or have grand adventures you'll never forget!

Designed by renowned Mexican architect Carlos Montero, Casita de Lunes is the perfect space for indoor/outdoor living. The livingroom, diningroom and master bedroom/bath open directly onto the huge flagstone patio which is steps away from the sandy beach of the Sea of Cortez. The king size bed of the master bedroom looks directly to the sea. The two guest rooms open to a protected courtyard sanctuary. Each guest room contains a queen and a twin bed and share a spacious jack 'n jill bath with 2 sinks and a shower. There is also a courtyard powder room and 2 outdoor showers for rinsing off after a swim.

Maybe you've wondered about those funny domes on the roof of the house? They are designed to increase the ventilation in the house by drawing the warm air up and out through a clever chimney-type system. The cross ventilation is excellent and generally there is an ocean breeze which keeps the house cool and comfortable in all but the hottest summer days. We also have several fans in the house which may be arranged to best advantage when needed but please note: we do NOT have air conditioning.

The house deliberately lacks a television and visitors never seem to miss it one bit! Cell phone and internet are provided as is bottled water for drinking (we don't recommend drinking the tap water). Our caretaker and amigo, Manolo, will be at your service for anything you need and our housekeeper, Lorena, is available to cook for you when you want a real 'night off'! The house is fully equipped with linens, towels, utensils, cookware, etc.

Why Teri and Rick chose Baja California Sur

Rick traveled the Baja peninsula from California to Cabo San Lucas via motorcycle for the first time in 1968, before the highway was completed. Teri traveled by car and express bus to Los Cabos in 1974 when San Lucas was just a tiny fishing village. Rick bought a lot in 1999 after camping on the very spot and risked building before any other homes existed in the area. We enjoyed many solitary years being the only house for miles around and now appreciate the opportunity to share our bit of paradise with the rest of the world.

What makes this house unique

Casita de Lunes is the ultimate place to unplug. We almost literally roll out of bed in the morning and into the sea for a swim, then a long walk on the beach. Our days are spent swimming, walking, kayaking, reading, marveling at the wonders of nature and feasting on fresh fish, orange juice and avocados, then winding down with fresh lime margaritas while watching the sunset. This is our version of paradise and we think you'll agree.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a great time at your place. The construction work was not really bothersome. The guys were very polite and friendly. Loved watching them play soccer in the road on thier lunch break. You don't see that in the states!!! They left no trash about and had a very tidy workspace. Wish I could go back and stay for about 100 years!

Beautiful =)

  • 5 of 5

This home is beautiful! As some of the reviewers pointed out, the beach is amazing and when we were there we only saw maybe a couple people at a time on the beach. For the most part, you have the beach to yourself. The views are amazing, you can watch the stingrays jumping out of the ocean, and the first day we were here we saw a whale swim by. Unfortunately, even though this is in a turtle sanctuary, I never had the opportunity to see a turtle, found some empty turtle nests but no turtles. Hopefully I will get a chance next time! If you would like a place that is away from it all, where you can truly relax, this is the place. We were there during the construction, but because Teri notified us in advance we were prepared to not allow it to ruin our vacation and it didn't. Some days were fine and on the other days when it was more noisy we headed out for the day. They are usually wrapping up at 4:30 and then you have the rest of the evening to enjoy in silence =) Anyone who really loves the ocean will love this place, the views from inside the house are amazing and the courtyard is great to sit in if its too windy to sit on the porch facing the ocean. Didn't have any problems with bugs which was nice and the house is nicely stocked with extras. The kayaks were great as well. La Ribera is a great little town which feels more like Mexico than Los Barriles, and its not far away from Cabo Pulmo which is amazing. We would stay again! Our family loved it!

Great beach getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Views of the sunrise and sunset were great from the beach, which is right outside the door from this place. Sliding glass doors that face the sea from the master suite and from living and dining areas make you feel like you are outside even when you are not. Though there is no A/C, the breezes keep the interior very comfortable. The temps were in the 80s during the day and cool at night, and we lived in swimming trunks and bathing suits to take advantage of the beach. Spent our days walking the beach, swimming, kayaking when the sea was calm, and reading on the patio. We mostly ate at the house, as the kitchen is well equipped and local fish, avocados and limes were plentiful. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

There aren't many places in the world like this.

  • 5 of 5

It is on a mostly unspoiled beach, just steps from your door into the water. When we there (early Oct.), the water temperature was in the low to mid 80s, perfect to just fall into a few times a day.

Also, there were almost no bugs. A very few non biting flies in the afternoon, but zero at any other time. I can't think of another beach that is so perfect to sit with your drink and watch the stars come out.

The house is very nicely laid out and has everything you need. We loved the 2 outdoor showers. (It has indoor showers too.) It is very safe and we never worried about leaving anything in the house. The snorkeling right off the beach in front of the house doesn't have much to recommend it, but the rocks, about 3/4 of a mile west, are filled with fish -- some schools in the hundreds. This place is hard to beat.

Awesome experience

  • 5 of 5

Where can we start? This house is set in a wonderful, secluded location on a beautiful, peaceful beach. Teri and Rick are helpful, communicative hosts.

We have rented multiple beach houses in Mex, and this was by far the best shore fishing, felt the most safe, and was the best stocked house we've experienced. Things we appreciated include the gated community, friendly and prompt security patrolling the beach, going full days without seeing anyone else on the entire beach, and helpful owners and groundskeeper. The house is well stocked with towels, water, linens, furniture, books and working wifi. The kitchen had an amazing pantry with lots of basics, along with a great array of small appliances including a blender, juicer and, our favorite, a crock pot (good for cooking without heating up the house), as well as a dishwasher, washer and dryer. Cool beach breezes filtered through the many doors and windows in the house, even in late June, and fishing from the shore and kayaks were always successful - daily catches from the beach! The closet was stocked with water gear, beach towels and a beach umbrella. We never once missed having a TV, instead, we watched seals, roosters, dolphins and rays swimming in the ocean from the patio, and the desert behind the house held fox, bobcats and cactus in bloom. The stars at night are something to get lost in, and the full moon rising over the beach is an unforgettable sight.

Town was very quiet and down a dusty road, so don't go if you're looking for a resort experience and a new restaurant to try every day; do go if you're looking for a true getaway with great home owners, friendly locals, great fishing, and a beautiful beach! Truly a great destination!

Baja Happiness

  • 5 of 5

After arriving at Casita De Lunas we never wanted to leave, it is that wonderful!! There is swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding just steps from the front door with miles of beach where you rarely see another person. It's the perfect place to relax, refresh and regroup, life is simple and wonderful here. We especially enjoyed our long walks on the beach and topping off our day with margaritas on the porch and witnessing the magnificent sunsets. There is plenty to do if you want to venture out, Cabo Pulmo, La Ribera and Los Barriles are not far and make for a good days outing. Rick and Teri are great and we can't wait to return to their beautiful home!
