Donner Lake area is very quite a wonderful place to bring the bikes for riding. Golfer's are 15 to 20 minutes from some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in the Tahoe area.
Streets are plowed in the winter and accessible year round. Cabin is within 15-30 minutes of major ski resorts. There are other smaller less expensive ski hills close if you are a beginner or teaching children to ski/snowboard.

About Carolyn Riolo
We raised our 3 daughters with summer and winter trips to the cabin at Donner, they loved the beach in summer, swimming, boating, fishing. Riding their bikes in the quite neighborhoods and hiking. Winters were always about skiing and snowboarding, we hit all the major ski areas, Squaw Valley, Alpine, Northstar and Sugar Bowl each resort less than 30 minutes from the cabin. Now my grandchildren are repeating the experiences and loving every minute of their time at the cabin.
Carolyn Riolo purchased this Cabin in 1981
Why Carolyn Riolo chose Truckee
My husband and I fell in love with Donner Lake in 1976 while camping in the area. We searched diligently for a cabin to purchase and in the fall of 1976 bought our first cabin with partners. In 1980 we purchased another lot and built a cabin, our 3 children were young and loved mountains, swimming in the lake, riding their bikes, sledding on the little snow hill, skiing in the winter. The area has not changed dramatically in the last 34 years, it remains a quite, beautiful retreat, without throngs of tourists clogging the streets.
What makes this Cabin unique
We enjoy fishing in Donner or one of the nearby lakes. Many trips are pure relaxing times to kick back with a good book away from all the chores and worries of home and office. It is always fun to return to the Cabin after a day on the slopes, enjoy good company, a warm fire and relax without the long drive home.

Great location with a couple of issues
We have been going to Donner Lake for about 40 years, since childhood. Where we once owned we now typically rent over the July 4th holiday and have never rented this cabin before. This cabin has a great location on the west end! It's a really wonderful area. It's one block from the private beach which you cannot use. So it's a longer walk to the public beach entrance which you can use.
The main points I want to make is that wi-fi is not good and the king sized bed is ridiculously bad.
The wi-fi is completely unreliable most of the day. It works early in the morning for about 45 minutes and then is intermittent at best. I had work to do and had to go elsewhere to do it which was a pain. The owners leave a number and account info for you, as guest, to call and try to fix it but that isn't really why you pay a good sum of money when you get a rental. I mean we all hate calling cable companies at our own homes let alone someone else's.
Finally the king size bed is not really useable for a couple unless you are a couple who sleeps intertwined all night. But like most people we like our space or we would sleep in a twin or double bed. The bed has a very deep crater in the center and so my husband abandoned ship at about midnight - our first night - to the room next to it. For the rest of our visit we slept in the very comfortable queen sized bed in that next room. If I owned this cabin I would never consider asking paying guests to sleep in such a bed. So be aware that if you bring enough people to fill all the beds they say are available, one couple will be stuck in an extremely uncomfortable bed that you quite literally have to climb out of. Otherwise, it's a comfortable and clean cabin in a beautiful and fun area.
We have rented a lot and have NEVER complained before, ever. We felt these two situations should be made clear to future renters.
The king size bed has been replaced. A renter had put raisers on the exterior legs of the bed and not on center support causing center to collapse. Private beach is always unavailable to renters on holiday weeks this is a decision the board of directors made 20 plus years ago.
Best location in Donner!
I love this cabin! It has plenty of room for me and my family and a great deck to bbq in the summer. It is one block from the beach so the kids could easily walk to and from all day long. The kitchen and bathrooms are old, but all functional and served us well. The beds were comfortable and the evening breeze through the windows kept the cabin cool even when it was 110 in the valley. I will rent this cabin over and over again!
Dark and dreary cabin. Owner poor communicator.
We were disappointed with the cabin. The panoramic pictures misrepresent the cabin in that they make the space look much more light than it is. Even during daytime you cannot be in any room and see anything without the lights on. It's a very dark , unwelcoming and rather depressing atmosphere. All the walls, wallpaper and furniture are dark colors. The photos also show the house as secluded when in fact it's very close to other buildings. There are rather offensive signs like, " hey you, close up by the book!" The owner did not get the contract to us in time, there are no instructions about anything having to do with the house and we were not told the check out time. We found out check out was 10 in the morning only by the cleaning people who rang the door bell at 10:30. The owner responded slowly to our emails and only did so after we wrote her twice. We felt our vacation was negatively effected by the dreariness of the cabin.
Guests made reservation less than 2 weeks prior to occupancy. Somehow they forgot to mail payment and notified me of such. I was also leaving town so directed the guests to send payment to my office and my administrative assistant would send the contract out as soon as check was received. Check was not written until 4 days before date of rental and not received until 2 days prior to occupancy. Contract was sent immediately upon receipt of check, however due to delay in payment not received by guests prior to occupancy. Contract has all instructions, therefore guests contacted owner for directions etc. One email query, during their stay, was sent after 10PM and 2nd in the AM complaining of lack of response. I responded at 8AM the following day within 10 hours.
The contract clearly states security deposit will be sent within 14 days, allowing owner time to correspond with cleaning crew. Guests were emailing while driving home that I could send the deposit. My phone was blowing up with requests for same. I explained to the guests that I had been out of town and would be in my office on Monday where my checks were in a locked desk and I would send the deposit refund. They were actually mailed their deposit within 1 week of departure.
If the blinds are opened the cabin has ample light. Usually guests familiar with Donner Lake realize it is a small resort community with very small lots.
It is disappointing to have a negative review, when I made accommodations for late reservation request and worked with guests when payment was not timely.
Just got back from 9 days at the cabin. This is the 2nd year we have stayed at this cabin. We just love it!! I'd recommend this cabin to anyone asking. The location is the best part, close to the beach. We also love the outside patio. We have several families staying there at the same time and the patio always full with guest.
Perfect spacious cabin close to the beach!
We rented this cozy but spacious corner lot cabin for three nights as myself and family were in Donner for the triathlon. Very clean, well stocked, lacked nothing in the kitchen. Great layout..nice deck, with gas bbq..loved grilling and enjoying the perfect evenings after spending the day at the beach which is walkable, easily. Carolyn always emailed back timely and made the experience very easy. We had three vehicles and had no problem with parking. I would recommend this cabin and plan to use it again in the future. Thanks Carolyn!
We do not rent to pets no dogs, cats or other pets allowed. Many residents are full time and object to barking dogs.
