About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Culebra is the essence of the 'manana' lifestyle. Nothing happens quickly here, unless it is falling in love with being in the moment. You can dress way down in Culebra: shorts and flip flops are de rigueur nearly everywhere.

There are unrivaled ocean views from this brand new, custom designed home 250 yards above and just a few minute walk to the justifiably famous Zoni Beach. You can consider this mile long, white sand beach crowded if you share it with 20 other beach goers. Villa Solano is ideally located for a full day at the beach, a quick dip anytime or just relaxing and enjoying the views.

Sunrise over St. Thomas is breathtaking. During the day you will see islands of every size and may even spot sea turtles or humpback whales from our deck. At night the lights of St. Thomas and passing cruise ships are trumped only by the twinkling of stars and the Caribbean Sea made silver by the moon.

The open design of the house features 18' tall ceilings, large door openings and louvered windows to take advantage of the cooling trade winds. Two large and private bedrooms, at opposite ends of the house, have queen beds. Two full baths have custom mahogany and granite vanities and spacious showers surrounded by glass. The living area has comfortable furniture and good lighting. You can eat in the dining area, belly up to the mahogany eating counter or dine al fresco at the terrace dining table. The well equipped gourmet kitchen has custom mahogany cabinets, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. Of course there is a blender! The inside living space flows seamlessly through large doors onto wide, tiled and covered terraces on three sides of the main house. Here you will find lounge chairs for napping and rockers for reading, admiring the view or doing exactly nothing.

You will need to leave Villa Solano eventually, even if it is just to replenish your pina colada supplies. Town is six miles away. There you will find several small but amazingly well stocked grocery stores, great Puerto Rican food, a few bars, conga music on Saturday night and surprisingly good pizza. You will find that English is spoken nearly everywhere on the island.

About The Owner

We are New Englanders who fell in love with Culebra 25 years ago. She is a gourmet cook and loves the beach. He is a fly fisherman and loves the size of the bone fish and tarpon.

The Owner purchased this house in 2010

Why The Owner chose Culebra

We rented houses all over Culebra for many years before we decided to build our own home. When we designed our home, our goal was to use all the good ideas we had enjoyed but to avoid all the problems we experienced in other rental homes. We think we have done exactly that.

What makes this house unique

The views are spectacular, the beach is incredible and right here, it's quiet, you can wear shorts and a T-shirt day and night. The kitchen is very well equipped.

Excellent Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My daughter and I had a wonderful time on Culebra and having this beautiful property as our home base. It is in a great location and beautifully appointed. I love to cook and found the kitchen exceptionally well stocked and delightful. The beds are comfortable with nice pillows and linens. The island is very laid back, the people are friendly and the beaches are beautiful. A vehicle is necessary...Jerry's Jeeps is fantastic! Jerry is so kind and helpful. We were met at the airport by Jim, who gave us a tour through town before leading us to the house. Cheryl assisted me in the booking process and she was wonderful. All in all, a splendid stay!

Owner's Response: We are so happy you had a great stay at Villa Solano! It sounds like you loved it for all the reasons we do: location, laid back island and a fun house. And Jerry, of course! We hope you will come back again in the future.

Just about perfect

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful two week visit to Culebra in April, made even more enjoyable by Villa Solano. What a perfect location! The house is close enough to Zoni Beach to make it very easy to pop down for a sunrise walk, a morning dip and another afternoon swim. And what a beach! Gorgeous sand, clear water and NOBODY (well OK, maybe a couple of other people). Between trips to the beach, we spent most of our time on the ocean facing deck, jockeying between the rockers and the loungers. The view out over Culebrita and St Thomas is so mesmerizing we really didn't even bother to get our anticipated reading done! And, I can't imagine a nicer place for a little snooze. The inside of the house is very tastefully decorated and frankly, does not feel like any other house we have ever rented. No cheap "good enough for renters" furniture, linens or kitchen gear here. While the house is not air conditioned, there was such a nice breeze we never wished we had it. Both bathrooms were lovely, but the shower in the master bedroom is the shower of my dreams! We did eat out a good deal (make sure you get to Zaco's Tacos and The Dinghy Dock), but the beautiful kitchen is totally geared up for cooking, from salad spinner and good knives to solid glassware and plates. My kitchen at home should be so well equipped! We did have a little glitch with a dead coffee maker, but it was taken care of (a new one) within 24 hours. Check in and check out were seamless. Overall, we felt so comfortable and at home at Villa Solano, it was hard to believe we weren't visiting friends rather than staying at a rental. We hope to return to Culebra soon and will plan ahead so that we can stay at Villa Solano once again!

New Year on Culebra

  • 5 of 5

We wanted a place for a week after a cruise out of San Juan. I stumbled across Culebra, read up a little and was hooked. We usually have a place with a pool but I was a little late and Villa Solano was available and near the beach so I was happy to give it a try. We flew from the small airport right next to the cruise port. It's a small plane and the 30 minute trip was an experience in itself with wonderful views over Puerto Rico. The lady who met us at the airport took my husband on a quick trip to show him the town while I did the paperwork with Jerry's Jeeps. Then we followed her to the house. It is difficult to imagine a more beautiful view from a kitchen sink. The house is beautifully decorated and very well equipped. A pool soon became a distant memory as we went straight down to the beach and swam in the warm water. There are many beaches - all of which offer something different. So, do you want to swim with turtles today, jump the waves or snorkel around a reef? The owners have left an island guide which must be the most comprehensive one on the island. My husband and elder daughter went scuba diving with the outfit in town near the ferry on 2 days which they enjoyed. We had thought food might be a problem but the island has several supermarkets which have everything you need for a week. If it's not available in one you can get it in another. We cooked in and ate out. Dinghy dock restaurant is great. Culebra has beaches that are not only incredible but also empty. We were there at the busiest time and still managed to find complete privacy. We also felt completely safe on Culebra - not hassled in town or on the beaches, everyone was just very nice. The New Year's eve party had some great bands in the town center with a lovely family atmosphere. In short it's like another planet! On our last day we got the 8 am flight with plenty of time for our midday flight out of San Juan.

Perfect home base, or just home!

  • 5 of 5

Villa Solano is absolutely THE best place to anchor a Culebra vacation. Luxurious accommodations for 4, with lots of privacy - a bedroom and bath at each end of the house. One could quite happily spend the whole time on the porch, watching the cruise ships come in and out of St Thomas, the kite surfers on nearby Zoni Beach, the breaching whales off to the westward, lots of boats in and out of Culebrita to the east, and all sorts of birds and waves and clouds and stars and changing light. But the rest of the island is so worth exploring too! Nothing is lacking in this excellently-appointed home, including the cooling breezes. And Jerry's Jeeps is the place to go for a car. Culebra has great beaches, good food, challenging hikes, wonderful snorkeling, and plenty of rum and coconut. What more could you want?

Best Vacation in Thirty Years

  • 5 of 5

We had been to Culebra before, but this was our first stay at Villa Solana. We were 2 couples, each with a bedroom at an end of the house - great privacy. We found lovely restaurants, but preferred eating in, as shopping was easy, and why waste a really nice gourmet kitchen. There are four choices of eating locations in the house, two of them on the incredible covered porch that looks over Culebrita to St. Thomas. Sleeping was a new experience - the only noises were the surf, and the lovely wind pouring through the louvres and across the bed. You might hear a dog bark, or an airplane engine, or a motorboat - once a day. We visited five great different beaches in a week, but most often settled on Zoni, a 2 minute drive or 8 minute walk. One more thing - in seven days, we didn't meet a single person, Puerto Rican, ex-pat or tourist, who wasn't incredibly friendly and helpful. The lack of fancy resorts has kept the Ugly American from ruining this paradise. Tip - Jerry of Jerry's Jeeps is a GREAT guy to rent from. Ask for one of his older Suzukis, which come in stick shift and automatic. The newer Jeeps are too wide and too garish.
