Artist Bungalow, Historic Downtown St. Marys
JUST BRING YOUR CLOTHES!
Whether you are vacationing, road tripping, working, or relocating, this bungalow will be a welcoming “temporary headquarters”. Clean, well appointed, with basic start up supplies ( herbs, spices, coffee and teas) to make your transition smooth....and a taste of true Southern hospitality.
The house itself is cheerful and sunny. Recently, I furnished it with a few of my “favorite things”. Antiques and artwork “eclected” through the years delight and surprise you along with the mix of modern creature comforts.
The entrance deck opens onto a cozy glassed and screened sun porch and then into an office area and spacious living room. Your master king sized bedroom awaits you at the end of the hallway. Your guests can enjoy the four poster double bedroom across the hall. Off the kitchen and living room is a pleasant dining room that looks out into the back yard where you can enjoy the birds at the feeder. The kitchen’s been updated with laundry center, dishwasher and microwave and of course, the fun, functional Hoosiers. If the weather is nice, move outside with your favorite beverage and talk about the day’s adventures while you grill your supper.
Explore our friendly downtown on our new beach cruisers. You can pedal around and enjoy our waterfront activities, meet your neighbors and make new friends.
For those of you traveling with your pets, you will enjoy the fact that you can let them out the back door into your own private fenced yard. Along with a charcoal grill, there is a patio table and chairs and a small garden planting, bird bath, and water feature.
You are one reservation shy and one short block from a Main St. USA parade in our friendly little town. Let us welcome you to the 'Second Oldest City in the United States'. ( St. Augustine claims they're first because their paperwork was in order!)

Hi, I’m Elizabeth Gray. I grew up in St. Marys. My family and friends are here and so has been my career as an artist. When I finished school, I started my own business, Gray’s Gallery and Custom Frame Shop. It’s been a place where I have framed lots of artwork for other people, and where I have displayed and sold my watercolors. It has been fun to furnish this space with my work and other local talent for you to enjoy.
Elizabeth Gray purchased this bungalow in 1983
When my father’s family moved down here, there was a little Scottish enclave that occupied four homes on the end of this block. Gilman Paper Company was just setting up, and from New York came my grandfather to head the power plant. His wife’s sister, Aunt Laura & her husband lived in this sweet little house and my grandfather lived next door. Eventually, both of his sons, my uncle and my father, found the loves of their lives, married and built & bought homes next door. And so began all of our lives in this sleepy little town, St. Marys by the sea. I remember stopping by Aunt Laura’s house in the morning to pick up treats lovingly wrapped in wax paper for recess, and by my grandfather’s house to pick posies for my teachers. To this day, I can still smell the sweet peas. What a gorgeous array of colors! Deep purples, fuchsias, lavenders, pinks, periwinkles, reds, whites, and blues. When I returned from college, I bought my grandfather’s house and started my art gallery and framing business there. When Aunt Laura’s house became available, I was able to keep it in our family. Now it is time to share it with you.
Comfort, efficiency, and fun were the themes as we furnished this house. There was lots of laughter as my friends and I pulled together and scrubbed and painted and bounced decorating ideas off of each other. Some of my original artwork is hanging here and my entire collection of St. Marys watercolors. It is fitting that Aunt Laura, the original owner, did the crochet hanging in the dining room. Art and antiques harmonize with modern conveniences. Privately nestled in a quiet neighborhood, this home is five blocks from both the Meeting St. Boat Dock and the St. Marys waterfront. You are one block away from watching boat traffic on North River or a small town parade on Main St. On a morning walk, you can see boaters headed out for a day on the water, shrimp boats trawling with their outriggers ready, an occasional dolphin, and every once in a while, a couple of little marsh bunnies. Laughing gulls, pelicans, cormorants, ibises, herons, mourning doves and red-winged blackbirds welcome you to the water. Every day you can visit with the river kitties that faithfully wait for a rub and a scratch as you round the corner. Golfers are 15 minutes away from two public courses. Ferry rides to Cumberland Island & Fernandina Beach are five minutes away, along with our beautiful waterfront park, restaurants, kayak rentals, and shopping. For those of you on temporary duty at Kings Bay, you are five minutes from the base gate. Life in the slow lane is but 30 minutes to the Jacksonville International Airport.
The bungalow remains a work in progress as I continue to upgrade with stained glass, nautical charts, gardens, wind chimes, patio furniture, and privacy fencing in the immediate back yard.
Now you can strike out on some new beach cruisers as you explore your new downtown and waterfront areas.
I'm in the middle of moving to St. Marys, and I wanted a place to get to know the area. This bungalow is simply wonderful. When the ad says, just bring clothes - it is spot on. Obviosly I brought groceries, but such items as tin foil, laundry detergent, and spices were available. There were bikes to use! I've been for an am and pm bike ride every day. This bungalow instilled great habits in me. I sat on thr porch during a storm and wrote... It's so cozy! You are welcomed with thoughtful "starters" like snacks, bath gels, and pet treats. Location is perfect. Provides info about the area. I'm moving here and I will certainly use this as a go to for my visitors. Just fabulous!!!!
We stayed for a month at the Artists Bungalow. It was comfortable, cozy, beautifully furnished, and the owner has thought of everything! We could not have asked for more. The cottage is in a great location, close to everything in Historic St. Mary's. Our dogs loved it too! This is by far the best VRBO experience we have had, and we highly recommend this one.
This was our second stay and we couldn't wait to come back to our little"homeplace" in St Marys. First of all...everything was CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!!! Extremely comfortable cottage with internet, TVs and Cable, well supplied kitchen and bathroom with little extra luxuries. I cooked some while we were there and lacked for nothing in utensils, pots, pans, appliances and even seasonings! Beds were dreamy and comfortable as well. If you enjoy bicycle riding or walking, this is the place for you. Hometown friendly with georgeous ancient oaks streaming with hanging moss floating in the gentle breezes line the quiet picturesque streets.Cumberland Island is a historic landmark and the tours very complete and enjoyable. A 5 star place to stay with all the comforts of a cozy little home. We will be returning on a regular basis to enjoy this place.
You, as we did, will immediately sense the wonderful charm of this home when you open the door and walk in. Paintings are in every room on every wall and you will notice something new and interesting each time you pass by. We just finished a ten week stay, escaping the cold of a northern winter, and the warmth of this home exceeded our expectations. You will not find a better rental value anywhere. Quality prevails throughout, from the bed and bath linens to the dishes and utensils in the kitchen. Whatever meal I wanted to cook, all of the equipment I needed was right behind a cabinet door. My husband is a technical guy, and he was impressed that everything in this house "works" perfectly. A binder filled with helpful information about the house plus an abundance of maps, restaurant menus, and area things to do was a fantastic help to us, just another example of Elizabeth's expertise. She was always prompt in answering any questions or helping us in any way.
I have stayed here several times on my business trips into the Saint Mary's area. The owner is a pleasure to work with and very accommodating. I always travel with my golden retriever and have never had any trouble. The house is beautiful and has a nice fenced in back yard (wonderful for the dog). I would highly recommend this place to anyone on extended stay in the area!
We have family in the area and wanted a place to stay that was close by, and that would accommodate all of us for dinner, etc. This listing from beginning to end was wonderful. The property is decorated with a collection of beautiful art (many by Elizabeth herself), and period pieces that were functional and charming. The master bedroom was the best as the mattress did wonders for my otherwise chronic back pain. Elizabeth had thought of everything from the welcome basket to toiletries, books, bikes, and a myriad of amenities. We traveled a lot while there, but I could see being holed up for an escape weekend as well. Loved it, and would recommend it unequivocally!!!
