Cortes Beachfront Home w/Hot Tub & Kayak on 5 Wooded Acres

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

The Wilcox Lodge is a serene retreat nestled on 5 wooded acres on the shore of Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island, considered by many to be the best of the Evergreen Islands. These islands are located on the famed 'inside passage' used by ships going to and from Alaska and are sheltered from winter Pacific storms by Vancouver Island, one of the largest and most interesting islands in the Northern Hemisphere. Cortes Island is served by regular scheduled ferry service from Campbell River. Campbell River on the east side of Vancouver Island has scheduled airline service from Vancouver (host city to the 2010 Winter Olympics), and charter service direct to Gorge Harbour is available from Seattle, Victoria, Vancouver and Campbell River.

Cortes Island is in the 'rain shadow' of Vancouver Island and has far less precipitation than Victoria or Vancouver. Weather is usually warm and sunny with cool evenings May thru October.

The Lodge is situated just above the beach with a panoramic view of the harbour and a view thru the harbour entrance of Vancouver Island mountains in the distance. Wildlife abounds. You may see bald eagles and many varieties of birds, deer down by the beach or out the kitchen window, sea lions, seals or an otter playfully swimming by, mink, and perhaps dolphins or a whale on the ferry ride over.

With nearly 1,500 sq. ft of living space, this rustic Lodge has all modern conveniences, a full well-equipped kitchen, comfortable and spacious living/dining area that opens onto a large 750+ sq. ft. L-shaped deck overlooking the beach and harbour. Hot tub on the deck. 2 chaise lounges make for lazy sunbathing/reading afternoons on the deck and the cafe & dining tables are a perfect spot for outdoor dining. Anyone for oysters on the barbeque??? Stairs off the deck provide access to the beach over a short but bumpy path. Kayak available for guest use. The Lodge sleeps 6: 2 in the lower loft (California King sleigh bed with McCroskey firm mattress & box spring), 4 in the upper loft (double bed and trundle bed with 2 twin mattresses). The Lodge is an 'A' frame with an open floor plan, the upper loft is accessed thru the lower loft and both lofts are partially open to the main living area (so no bedroom privacy). The bathroom has a sink, toilet, shower and a clothes washer (dry your clothes outside on the clothes line, they will smell so fresh and good); there is also an outhouse. There is ample parking for several cars. There is a land line phone for local calls & limited long distance, 32' Sony flat screen TV w/DVD player in the lower loft (no TV channels, cable or satellite, just for DVDs), CD player and record player w/record collection just for old times sake. We also have a collection of books, some by local authors, and some board games for the chance rainy day. Feel free to add a shell or two to our display case coffee table in the upper loft or a beach combing find to our entry way beach combers wall. You'll also find a kayak under the house which you can use during your stay... Main thing is to unwind, have fun, enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings...

Note this is a rustic beach house......not a modern city home transported to water's edge....we are continually upgrading the property but not everything is 'all perfect'...although we keep making improvements each year.

Also note that the private driveway is a bit rough and bumpy in places. You need to drive very slowly and carefully to avoid scraping the bottom of the car on the driveway.

The Lodge is not as remote as it sounds, one neighbor's cottage is very close by and can be seen from the deck & from the lower loft bedroom bay window, there is a small cabin in the woods up the road not visible from the main house, others are within walking distance as is the Gorge Marina with restaurant, small grocery, laundromat, gasoline, and a new beautiful outdoor swimming pool & hot tub overlooking the harbour/marina and open to the public. The Lodge is 2 1/2 miles from downtown Whaletown with government dock, post office, church and mini-library. Internet access is available at the Gorge Marina.

When you tire of hanging out around the Lodge, numerous outdoor recreational opportunities abound: fishing, boating, sailing, kayaking, hiking, biking, swimming at the Marina pool or Hague Lake, Hollyhock retreat center courses, other beaches to explore, skate board park...

Call now to reserve for summer 2017, availability in June, July, August, Sept and Oct. All are great vacation months!

About Sue Vican

My parents left this fabulous summer beachfront home to me and my sister Gina. I first came here when my eldest son was 5 years old and had great fun boating, beach combing, swimming, collecting clams and oysters off the beach (and eating them), fishing (my son started fishing for 'coddies' in the harbour and later caught his first salmon here). I remember the year my dear old dad won the local 'salmon derby' for biggest catch of the day, another fishing expedition when he hooked a bird that was fishing too (ever try to get a live bird off your fish hook?), also the time my son boiled his baby shark to try and extract the shark's teeth only to find they had boiled away into nothing, many potluck dinners and parties with the locals, dinners at Hollyhock and visiting their beautiful organic garden, hikes, picking apples out of abandoned orchards and blackberries for delicious pie making (and eating, you're catching on to a key theme here I hope!). Have come back to Cortes many summers, the natural beauty here is stunning, gorgeous beach, water and mountain views from every part of the island, I could go on and on.... The ferry rides are fun, last time we saw a pod of dolphins right in front of us... I've also traveled by sea plane which is a great adventure itself...I live in Northern California with Sparkie the killer toy poodle (pictured here), my husband Ivan and two sons.

Why Sue Vican chose Comox-Strathcona I

My parents discovered the 'hidden gem' called Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island in one of their long summer sailing expeditions in this region. They fell in love at first site, got off the sailboat, found a realtor, the rest is history. The Lodge had been built by a glazier who used some interesting old windows in the Lodge that he salvaged from other houses where he was replacing the old w/the new; his most interesting glass work is some 'L' shaped windows where the two pieces of glass are glazed together w/o frames between to maximize the Gorgeous views... The Lodge still needed a lot of work and my parents spent the next several summers laboring away to make it the beautiful serene retreat that we now invite you to come enjoy. My Dad loved the locals, the great salmon fishing, the plentiful oysters and clams on the beachfront, gardening and partying. My mom loves the view of the Gorge Harbour entrance with boats coming and going, beach combing to find interesting artsy driftwood pieces (some decorate the lodge still), sunbathing on the deck and waking up to more of the Gorgeous views.

What makes this house unique

My absolute favorite thing about the Wilcox Lodge is THE AIR SMELLS SWEET, do you big city dwellers even know what I'm talking about??? I myself forget how great air can smell when I'm stuck in the big city pollution...on Cortes the pace is slower, the people friendly, the natural beauty is stunning, great beach, water, snow-capped mountain and forest views in every direction, hard for me to pick a favorite view they are all so spectacular. The local seafood is great, there are farm stands and a coop store where you can buy organic foods. There are some excellent restaurants for when you don't feel like cooking. You can get internet access if needed, we don't have it at the Lodge because we want to escape from all our electronic addictions and hookups for a while. The Hollyhock retreat offers a variety of interesting workshops and you don't have to stay there to enjoy their fabulous dinners and organic gardens. Other island activities include swimming at Hague Lake, kayaking and sailing excursions, fishing, and more. Google and you will find lots of info. A number of famous people have chosen Cortes Island as a summer retreat and for good reason, yet it is not highly touristy or over-commercialized. Our Lodge has a great big expansive deck, I could be happy just hanging out on the deck all day. I love sleeping in the trundle bed, waking up and looking out at the water one direction and the forest the other direction. Mostly I enjoy spending time with family and friends in our own private little piece of paradise. I hope you will come, enjoy and create your own fabulous Cortes memories.

Relaxing Spring Break with the Kids at the Beach

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time at the cabin. So relaxing and fun and a perfect spring break. Enjoyed beach walks & play, exploring Gorge Harbour in our new inflatable boat, clam digging at Mansons, and doing some maintenance work around the place for my cousin Sue. The kids loved the Easter egg hunt & pancake breakfast with tug of war and other kids games. Coming back again next year. Kristy VN

A hidden gem amongst the island wilderness!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the Wilcox Lodge was nothing short of magical. It's the kind of place where you feel totally one with nature. The huge deck offers amazing views of the surrounding ocean and the opportunity to watch all kinds of wildlife pass by. The sunsets were incredible!! The kayaks were so much fun to take out and to explore the coastline. A definite must if you're visiting. The spacious layout of the cabin allows for a perfect area for gatherings and lots of conversation pieces. We loved looking at all the eclectic decor! The free standing fireplace was a big hit with us as we had some rain one day and it made for a cozy evening curled up with a book and some tea. Sue looked after us so well and was available to answer any questions we had. If you're looking to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and find some serenity, this is the place to do so!! A little slice of heaven that you never want to leave. We feel lucky to have visited. Thanks Sue!!

Having rented many cottages, apartments and homes worldwide, I feel I have a good grip on value for accommodation. This property is overpriced. The place was not particularly clean, cobwebs and dust throughout. The bedding was flannel (strange choice for the summer) and the towels were all mismatched and all we could find were hand towels in a chest. There are personal items in all the drawers, we kept our clothes in our suitcases. The beds were fairly comfortable. This property could be 5 star with just a little effort. The view is lovely.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your candid feedback. Yes, our home is rustic and is advertised as rustic in our HomeAway listing. Regarding pricing, I periodically compare my pricing to other accommodations on the island, none of which are exactly the same, and feel that the pricing is fair. Part of what you are paying for is the fantastic view, the beachfront location, the private hot tub, spacious home and deck, and the time of year. The tourist season on Cortes Island is short and August is the highest demand month. May, June and September are great times to visit Cortes Island and I am happy to extend discounted pricing these times of year. I have reviewed your other concerns with my house cleaner. The sheets you thought were flannel on the beds are actually a stretchy jersey cotton, not flannel, and appropriate for summer use. We have plenty of towels of all sizes and some of them are mismatched; I believe that a clean bath towel was available for each guest. But the towels may be getting a little worn and we are bringing up a new supply in September. Also, there shouldn't be personal items in the bedroom chests of drawers so I have asked my house cleaner to check more frequently that prior guests haven't left personal items behind. Extra blankets are stored in some of the dresser drawers and I have asked my house cleaner to move these to the trunks & cedar storage chests, freeing up all the dresser drawers for guests. Regarding cleaning, note that this is a rustic A-Frame home and is challenging to clean because there is not a square corner in the place & cobwebs do collect quickly in this house on the edge of the forest. Still your comment about cobwebs has prompted me to purchase a telescoping duster to make it easier to clear away cobwebs. Note that all the rental income from this property goes right back into maintenance & improvements so your feedback is valuable to me as I prioritize what to improve next. This year's major improvement was a new septic system. I hope you were able to enjoy the natural beauty of Cortes Island even though you found the accommodations not perfectly suited to your needs. Again, your feedback is most appreciated. Best, Sue

The location and setting couldn't be beat, absolutely beautiful!

It's clear the cottage and island are both loved by the owner, this was reflected through the books both personal and historical that filled the book case. The cottage has all the necessities, kayak was a nice bonus, and the welcome gift of coffee and wine was a great surprise. We really appreciated being able to bring our dog and so did he.

We would stay here again.

Clam digging and oysters can be gathered on selected Cortes Island beaches with fishing licenses. There is a small skate board park on the island. Various markets and festivals also.
