In the heart of Aix en Provence’s ancient quartier of Cathedral Saint Saveur, this extraordinary apartment in a grand home from the beginning of the 18th century will enchant you with its charming elegance. Remarkably calm and private, overlooking the stately courtyard of the Hôtel de Fontvert, which is on the official list of France’s historic buildings, Ambiance d’Aix is a small piece of paradise in the historic center. You will instantly note its distinctive 12 foot high ceilings, tall arched windows, and original hexagonal 'tomette' floor tiles, gleaming with centuries of gentle care. The apartment is beautifully decorated with French antiques and quality furnishings combining the spirit of the period with contemporary comfort and modern conveniences such as microwave oven, cable television, iPod/CD players, and high speed internet.
This extraordinary 58 square meter (600 square feet) apartment on the second floor (first floor European) accommodates up to four people and consists of:
• a welcoming entry hall with interphone entry system to the building
• a spacious living/dining room with its high ceilings and walls adorned with intricate original gypserie – plaster moldings with figures and ribbon designs - with views to a neighbor's large, quiet, and sunny courtyard below. For news and entertainment, there is a Sony flat-screen high definition TV with French, German, English, and other language channels and a CD/iPod/iPhone player with radio. The dining table comfortably seats six people.
• a breath-takingly romantic bedroom with pillow-top queen size bed covered with quality linens and topped with a French Ciel du Lit flowing with sheer draperies. An inviting recamier (chaise longue) beside the tall windows overlooks the neighbor's courtyard below
• a newly-renovated and well-equipped kitchen where you’ll delight in preparing meals from fresh ingredients gathered at the many local markets nearby
• a two-level bathroom with spacious shower on the mezzanine level 8 steps up
• a second bedroom/study with a closet and couch that converts to a very comfortable queen size bed with upgraded mattress
• wireless Internet access throughout the apartment with IPod/iPhone docking stations in both the living room and the main bedroom’s radio alarm clock
Tastefully decorated and distinctively furnished with a combination of both contemporary and antique pieces, the apartment’s spacious rooms and windows open to either a neighbor's private courtyard below or a quiet lane. All the rooms are wonderfully light and sunny.
The apartment has central thermostatically controlled heating for the cooler months, and stays warm in winter with its thick stone walls . For the warm months, there is good ventilation with through drafts as it has double exposure. Although we would not consider living without air conditioning in our Virginia home, we are completely comfortable in our Aix apartment even in the height of summer. In fact, we’re surprised to find how warm it is when we walk outside!

About Anne Woodyard
The best way to describe us (Kirk and Anne Woodyard) is that we're interested in the stories that make the places we visit come alive. We've visited Europe more times than we can count, learned some entertaining stories there, and met some warm and helpful people who also enjoy the wonders of music and life in Europe. Between our music-related travels, we split our time between our homes near Washington DC and in the south of France. In addition to Ambiance d'Aix, we own a village house in the Languedoc near Agde (VRBO listing 34379) which we have enjoyed and rented since 2004. While both of us have experience in organizing travel and music groups Kirk's background is in project management and competitive writing, and Anne is an accomplished pianist with over thirty years of teaching experience, and a travel and food writer specializing in France and Italy.

Why Anne Woodyard chose Centre Ville
We have loved Aix en Provence since our first sight of the city many years ago, and have long dreamed of a place of our own there. We were thrilled to find this unique and special apartment in the very heart of the old town, filled with beauty and history, in the spring of 2010, and we love hearing from guests who enjoy it as much as we do!
What makes this Apartment unique
The location of Ambiance d’Aix is superb for classical concerts, opera, and markets. In the original Roman part of Aix, the pedestrian Cathedral Saint Saveur quartier is only blocks from the colorful market squares of Aix – the flowers on Place de l’Hôtel de Ville and the abundant and delicious produce of Place Richelme. Ten meters down our narrow lane is the beautiful Place des Martyrs de la Resistance, formerly the Place de l’Archeveché – a perfect place to sit by the fountain and enjoy a glass of rosé, and the center of Aix’s Lyric Festival, the former Palais de l’Archveché (Archbishop). On this square is the Museum of Tapisseries, and around the corner is the Museum of Old Aix. Thousands of years of history - from Renaissance to Medieval to Roman and beyond - overflowing with architectural masterpieces, Aix en Provence offers today's visitors the opportunity to explore winding, cobbled streets, visit stunning old buildings, appreciate the museums and galleries, scour the markets, absorb the plentiful musical productions and dine in its many delightful and colorful restaurants and cafes. The surrounding countryside offers the undulating hills of Provence where Paul Cezanne, Emile Zola, Marcel Pagnol and Fredric Mistral lived and drew inspiration. Beautiful views from hilltop medieval villages of the Luberon, acres and acres of vines and olive groves, fruit orchards, and lavender fields, all contribute to tantalizing the senses in every respect. With the Mediterranean’s Cote d'Azur close by, the coastal resorts of Cassis, Marseille (20 minutes), Cannes, St. Tropez, along with many lesser known but equally delightful beaches, are enticing. Throughout the seasons, Ambiance d'Aix is an ideal starting point for discovering the diversity and richness of the South of France - a haven of peace, conducive to dreaming, meditation, and rest welcomes you at the end of a day filled with impressions of Provence.

Charm, location, all the comforts of home
We spent ten days in this apartment over New Year’s and found it a great place to call home while exploring Aix-en-Provence.
The location is amazing: on a quiet little street of historic homes tucked away in the center of the old town and yet just a two minute walk from the daily flower and produce markets - and all the lively café and restaurant terraces where locals meet for coffee or a glass of wine. Everything we needed (grocery stores, coffee roasters, shops selling local products, restaurants of all kinds) and everything we wanted to see (musées, neighborhoods, monuments) seemed to never be more than a ten minute walk away.
The apartment itself says « you’re in Provence now!» from the time you first open the door. Furnishings and appointments are a comfortably curated mix of French vintage & antique pieces. Ceilings are high with lovely moldings, the fireplace is sculptured marble, and floors are tiled with the authentic hexagonal « tommettes » my French friends are always so proud of in their country homes. Everything comes together to create a space that feels elegant and homey all at the same time. I was especially taken with the generous library of Provence themed books - novels by Peter Mayle, art books, coffee table books about the region.
More practically, kitchen and bathroom fixtures and tiling are new, the kitchen is well equipped, the bed is very comfortable, and everything is clean and well maintained. Very calm and quiet in spite of being right in the center of the historic center.
Very pleased with our stay in this apartment
The perfect retreat in the lovely city of Aix
This home in Aix en Provence is the perfect home base to explore the city. I stayed there with my boyfriend for a few days in November, and was delighted to have such a lovely place right in the middle of everything. The apartment is furnished in soothing colors with luxurious fabrics and beautiful French antiques. I love the big windows that overlook the flower filled courtyard below. Both beds are very comfortable with plenty of pillows and blankets.
The bathroom is nicely renovated with sleek modern fixtures and a heated towel rack, a nice touch. The shower is spacious with plenty of hot water, which can be a rarity in Europe! The kitchen has all we needed to prepare meals, and the window overlooking the dining room makes it easy to converse with family while cooking.
You really couldn't ask for a better location in Aix. The home is just a few steps easy from the cathedral, town hall, and lots of pretty shops and restaurants. There's definitely no need for a car when staying here, it's an easy walk to everything city. We can't wait to return!
So glad you enjoyed your stay - we'd love for you to return for a longer visit!
Amazing stay in the heart of Aix
This place is absolutely amazing. A gorgeous apartment in the heart of the old city. You can walk to everything here, and it is relatively convenient to parking if you are driving in (we did). The place itself is beautiful with high ceilings, tall windows, and stylish decor. It is a blend of historic charm and modern convenience. The kitchen and bathroom have clearly been redone fairly recently and are great - really some of the best we have experienced in France.
If you find yourself thinking you want to save a few dollars per night and park yourself outside the city center - don't. It is really worth a little extra to be in the heart of Aix.
Thanks, Gabriel, for taking time to review our place - we're so glad you enjoyed your stay!
eloquent, historical and comfortable
My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Aix. The Ambiance apartment was located on a small quaint little street yet close enough to enjoy all that a small village has to offer as well as a great place to rest and enjoy a step back in time! The home had all that we needed to enjoy our stay as well as experience the uniqueness of staying in a historical part of town. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. It was beautifully decorated to match the historical feeling! We enjoyed strolling through the streets, sitting at a cafe, coming across both interesting people and sights! We enjoyed following the path of many fountains located in the town. The market is full of life, vegetables, fruits, and beautiful flowers! I would highly recommend this home!
In love with Aix
The apartment was all that we hoped it would be from the photos and description--comfortable, clean, well-equipped (though it would be great to have a toaster) and maintained, and in a wonderful location. It was close enough to all the Aix attractions to make it easy to get to them, but far enough away to be a refuge. It was as quiet as living in the city can be. We look forward to returning.
My husband and I stayed at Ambiance D'Aix for a week and we could have easily made it two. The apartment is in the old section of Aix, and easy to locate in the pedestrian district. A wonderful plaza just outside offers a place to sit and relax with a cafe' or a glass of rose', and it is a short distance to the daily markets and many restaurants and cafe's throughout Aix. We also took in a day at the Themes Spa, a short walk from the apartment, which was delightful and very rejuvenating.
The apartment was clean and comfortable, with a very comfy bed and small and handy kitchen. We enjoyed cooking our market finds and relaxing with the open windows over the courtyard. I would highly reccomend this apartment especially for a couple looking to enjoy walking all over the city.
The only negative for us was parking, hard to find on the street and almost all pay machines and expensive in the nearby garages. So take the train as a car in not necessary here!
