Berkeley is home to one of the world's great universities -- about 1.5 miles away (65 bus stops a few yards away). Also by 65 bus: Math Institute, UC Botanical Garden, Lawrence Berkeley Lab, Lawrence Hall of Science. Great restaurants in the Gourmet Ghetto -- Chez Panisse, etc.. Two major theater companies. Philharmonia Baroque, Cal Performances, museums. 4th St. shopping and restaurants. The #65 bus connects to the Berkeley BART station for service to San Francisco, Oakland, Orinda, SFO, OAK, etc.
The studio has a completely separate and private entrance in an architect-designed home. The space is small so it best suits a single person or a very cozy duo. Ideal for visiting scholars, parents of UC students, visiting grandparents, etc.
Transportation is very easy by bus, car, and foot (some neighbors walk to UC).
Keywords: Studio (as in NYC or Paris hotel room -- not an art studio).
I fell in love with this property on first sight. There are gorgeous views of the SF Bay, gardens abound, deer and turkeys walk down Euclid Ave. It feels like a garden-setting in the middle of a vibrant city. I love to travel but also take in the many wonders of the Bay Area.
Susan Kinloch purchased this studio in 1994
The rental came with the property when I purchased it in 1994.
Garden views, birds, a very interesting residential neighborhood with special architecture all around. Partial views of both the Oakland-Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate -- gorgeous! Enjoy beautiful sunsets over San Francisco Bay. Quiet. A safe part of Berkeley. Great transportation -- far and near.
I believe this review was in response to a mildly negative report I left about their stay. I have never left a negative report before and I've been doing this for many years. The woman dyed her black hair in the shower and left stains on the nice towels as well as on the bathroom floor. The man smoked outside but it left a smoke smell on the linens inside (I state NO SMOKING as many people are allergic to smoke.). Coffee was spilled on the floor. They were 1 hour late in checking out, etc. It was not a good experience for me or for them. Most people enjoy this Lovely Studio and appreciate the cleanliness I provide and quietness. I've never had a review that is less than 4 stars -- tells you something.
We loved our stay in this super comfortable, cozy bedsit. Susan had everything ready for our visit, and we felt right at home. There is ample parking on the street, the view of the Bay and city greeted us each morning, and the quiet surroundings invited us to relax. Highly recommend. Thank you, Susan, for your hospitality! We hope to visit again! R&L
This is my third time staying at the studio, and it was once again a wonderful stay. The studio is located in a very nice, safe, and quiet neighborhood in Berkeley. Most hotels and apartment/studio rentals in Berkeley come with no parking. On this note, in our first visit to Berkeley we stayed at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza, a lovely establishment with NO parking. Every night we had to park in the public parking about 1/2 block from the hotel and walk back. On another occasion we stayed in the Berkeley City Club, another lovely hotel with very limited parking. Space in this city is really limited. However, this studio is an exception, as right in front of Susan's studio, there is plenty of parking in the street. If one arrives late (past 10:00 p.m.) one might have to park a little further down the road, however, I always found a spot to park, and as I said earlier the area is VERY safe. Susan is a very private person, who gives her guests their space. During this past stay, I only saw her once, and that was perfect for both. The studio really feels like you are in your own house, where you can come and go as you please, and in complete privacy. Susan is always available and is very accommodating. During my past stay, my flight got into San Francisco at 1:30 a.m. and she made arrangements so I could get into the studio at that late time. When I return to Berkeley next summer, I hope to stay here again. It is really one of the better, nicer, and most affordable studio options in Berkeley, and this is why most people rate it a 5!
The location was just perfect for my stay. The studio was small, but tasteful and well organized. I had no problem parking on the street.
The perfect place to hunker down and write or read a novel. The owner's wall of books includes the masters as well as books of inspiration and travel. It was an unexpected perk given the already tranquil wood paneled space and windows with views. To see the city is just icing on the cake!
A very pleasant small studio in the Berkeley Hills. Great for a couple or single. Tea & coffee included as well as fridge. Probably should have a car or just use Lyft. Very quiet. Friendly host!
Check out time was not disclosed. Trash is near the studio in the carport. Uneasy access to the studio since the owner parks her car in the carport without consideration of the space for her guests. Sometimes we had to literally squeeze in. Parking on the street was not convenient and sometimes not available. The Iron/Ironing board was dirty and kept leaving spots on the cloths whenever we used it. The neighborhood is decent. It’s ok option for road travelers that need a place to stay at night (versus a Motel for instance). The owner left dishonest reviews about our stay (we are married couple and also very hygienic). We got "2 star" review about our Cleanliness even though we made the bed, cleaned the dishes, and kept the studio organized before leaving. Also, she left a 3 star on House rules. I wonder what house rule she is talking about since we were barely in the Studio, just to sleep at night. 3 star on communication, we only talked to her twice. If we were to choose again, we'd rather get a Hotel instead. She definitely needs a course in Customer Service. If it wasn’t about her unfriendly attitude and dishonest reviews, we’d have ignored some of the inconvenient details, and wrote her a better recommendation that she doesn’t really deserve.
Quiet, safe neighborhood but near all the cultural, educational, and recreation possibilities of Berkeley. Yards to a bus to downtown, BART, UC Berkeley, Lawrence Hall of Science and the Math Institute.
