About the property

House, 5 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10)

Maison des Oliviers is a beautifully renovated 17th Century stone house. This home is well appointed with period antiques, art, carpets and comfort. Elegant but at the same time casual. It features two sun terraces, a first floor master suite, full kitchen with dishwasher, formal dining room, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, bbq grill, washer and dryer, 4 bedrooms upstairs with bath and much more. It is located in the small and idyllic hilltop village of Caramany (pop 150) with views of the historic 12th Century Chateau, lake and the glorious Pyrenees. Caramany has it's own wine Cave, restaurant and fresh bread and croissants delivered daily. The village is also a short walk to lake and river swimming. The Mediterranean beaches with fabulous restaurants, Cathar castles, wine touring and Perpignan airport are all but a few minutes away.

Maison des Oliviers is ideal for those looking to relax and unwind. It's a wonderful home base for lots of activities in the area like hiking, biking, horseback riding, lake and river swimming, cave and waterfall exploring to name but a few.

But most of all, sit back and enjoy the beautiful view from the terrace with your friends, family, (lover...) and of course a glass of amazing Caramany wine!

About Joseph Lorino

We are film directors and producers from New York City. We are enchanted with the Roussillon. You will be too!

Joseph Lorino purchased this house in 2004

Why Joseph Lorino chose France

On my first trip to Europe, during my freshman year of college, I drove through the area. I swooned.

What makes this house unique

The ravishing landscape is what we yearn for when we're in NYC on a crazy day. And the food, wine and people never let you down.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had the most wonderful time in Caramany. The children so enjoyed the lake and we loved sitting on the terraces sipping wine and watching the swallows come home to the village at sunset. This is a beautiful, beautiful place. We loved it, you will too.

Wonderful home in beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

Lovely home in beautiful location. People in the town so friendly. Lots of places to visit in the area - Cathar castles, vineyards, lakes and waterfalls. Not too far from many Mediterranean beaches. Very comfortable home with all we could possibly need for family and friend get togethers.

Magnificent French Oasis - spectacular stay!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and a group of friends had a fantastic time at Maison des Olivers last August. What a special home and special area. I am a professional chef so the fully fitted kitchen was a delight to work in. Local fresh produce in season is sold in the village (as well as freshly baked bread and croissants!). The house is beautiful, full of light and graciously decorated. The beds and linens are of the best quality. The village boasts a gourmet restaurant and the Caramany cooperative vineyard. These vineyards produce some of the best selling wines in France from the Languedoc/Rousillion (they are incredible, especially the reds). There is a gorgeous lake only a short walk away (you can see it from the house as well as the 13th century chateau and church) that is warm and luscious and also lots of river swimming areas nearby. We drove 30 minutes to Canet Plage to try out the Cote du Rousillion beaches. They rival the French Riviera and the fish there was AMAZING. Go to Caramany and stay at Maison des Olivers. We had the time of our lives.

The Real Thing in the Langue d'Oc Countryside

  • 5 of 5

A peaceful glow still comes back when we remember our week at this unique place. Our stay was like going back in time, to a place removed from commercial-industrial modern stressful life.

The town is the real thing of countryside France, a place with medieval roots, its own culture, and a winemaking tradition that has kept the town alive. The clustered buildings of the town seem to have grown out from an outcropping where the church and its courtyard were built long ago. Like a cubist painting, houses cluster out so that the entire town nestles on the hillside over the valley of the Agly River. It's a beautiful place.

The house has a feel of 19th Century elegance. It is simple and straightforward as appropriate for this rugged countryside. But with its 5 bedrooms, 2-1/2 baths, thick-walled shuttered windows, formal dining room, big fireplace, and 2 picturesque terraces, it is your country manor house. No trashy modern furnishings, but framed pictures, big carved armoires, and a taste for the theatrical, not surprising since the owners are filmmaker-artists. Looking out over the town, with an evening sky and the church bell marking the hour, is a vacationer's dream.

Amandine was delightful as our local host. Everything was clean and neat, and she was totally responsive to our needs.

This is a place not to be missed. We will go back as soon as we can.

French Immersion

  • 5 of 5

Want to feel comfortable, at home, welcome, and like a French native, then this is the place for you. The home has all the amenities including dishwasher, washing machine, plenty of pots, pans, dishes, wine glasses, a large dining room, and comfortable living room with TV, DVD player, and WiFi. There is plenty of backup supply of household essentials as well as sugar, salt, pepper, cooking oil, coffee mustard, jam, etc. The decor is old world and charming. The owner's suggestions for sites to see, wineries to visit, and restaurants to sample are spot on. The outdoor patio and its covered section are great for enjoying the warm Fall weather and lovely view while sipping a glass of wine and nibbling on fromage and crackers or enjoying lunch or dinner at home. We are two retired couples and we enjoyed our stay very very much. Tres bien!

Our month in Southwest France

  • 5 of 5

The Caramany house is wonderful! Enjoy a glass of the local wine on the patio; the views of village are lovely, especially near sunset. Be sure to read the directions for the coffee machine; once mastered; the expresso is delicious. After our coffee each morning, with a little pastry treat from the daily belangerie truck, we'd enjoy a hike along one of the many beautiful trails in the area. We spent the rest of the day roaming around the countryside, tasting the wines, and visiting the many historical sites. Like great French food? If you do, you're in for a treat. We recommend ' Chez Pierre' in Belesta and especially, 'Les Capitelles' in Cassagne. Dianne, owner, also the cook and waitress, is great! She speaks English fluently, also German. Please say 'Hello" from Ann and Roger.

Thanks Chris for our most enjoyable France visit ever!

A wonderful place to stay!

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house is comfortable with everything we needed to feel at home. Getting bread in the village square is a lovely way to start the day, and dinner in the evenings on the deck with the sunset was great. We explored widely, from Cathar castles to local vineyards to a local swimming hole. Thanks!!
