Cliff Cottage offers a lot, and, it is only a 5-6 minute walk to Wright's Beach. Friends of Cliff Cottage have described their stay as restorative; and, they say that the whitewater views of the Pacific Ocean have a calming effect.
If the traveler is concerned about climate change, he or she can breath a little easier knowing that the newly installed solar-powered system can offset most of the electricity used.
The long, rear deck, living room, kitchen, and hot tub all take full advantage of the newly enhanced, panoramic ocean and whitewater views; private garden provides a sanctuary for birds, including hummingbirds, cliff swallows, warblers, finches, blackbirds, and others.
Cook a meal on the gas BBQ while you enjoy watching the waves crash on the shore and the sounds of the Pacific Ocean. Or, slip onto the padded bay-window seat with a cup of coffee, a cozy fire, and watch a storm roll in. DVD, VCR, and satellite TV are available in the living room; master bedroom (European Sleepworks engineered king sleeping system) has DVD. Free, wireless, satellite internet access was recently installed. Cook a holiday meal in the convection oven and/or the gas range while you watch the tide roll in and out from the kitchen. The loft has a queen bed with two sky-lights and views of the hilly ranch land to the east.
(At night, one can see the far-off headlights of cars traversing the steep grade down to Jenner.) To the east are rolling hills, dotted with cattle, and green grass much of the year. Hiking trails to the top of the hills provide magnificent views far up and down the coast-those lucky cows. A ten-minute hike northward along the bluff overlooking the ocean affords views of the rugged, majestic coastline. Or, after a short hike northward along the beach, all traces of human existence disappear: houses, roads, cars, even telephone poles can’t be seen. Ocean-spray from the crashing of the waves against rock formations of all colors, sea-life, sand, bluffs, and birds are all that are visible. (Keep an eye out for a small cave in the bluff.) A couple of miles or so further north along the beach, at very low tide, one can skirt a bluff that juts into the ocean to arrive at Sea Shell State Park.
During the evening, spectacular sunsets can often be seen from the deck. It is unusual to find a hot tub with such a splendid view of the ocean-in the moonlight, the water shimmers and sparkles. The nights are usually clear, giving up the unimpeded views of stars and the Milky Way. The only sound you hear is the ocean-no passing cars can be heard since you are so close to the ocean.
The garden is in the front of the house. Through the window, the dining/breakfast room and the ocean beyond are seen. Humming birds, cliff swallows, and finches are frequent visitors to the garden. Hermit thrushes are often heard, and birds of prey can be seen as well as shore birds, warblers, and vireos-to name a few. The dining/breakfast room offers views of both the garden and the ocean. The master bedroom opens through French doors to the garden.
Living-space, accommodations :There are splendid views of the ocean from the comfort of the living room. To the right is the entertainment system, including satellite TV, VCR, DVD, CD and stereo. Sliding doors close the library off from the living room.
Beach: Although Cliff Cottage is about seventy feet above Wright’s Beach-high enough that tsunamis are of little worry-the large Monterey Cypress that covers the cliff gives the impression that the ocean is very close. (The cliff is more of a steep slope, not a sheer cliff.) The beach is about a 5 to 6 minute south on Cliff Avenue and a short distance along Hiway One to Duncan's Landing, then down to the beach. There are plenty of wonders to explore along the waterfront and beach-one of the most pleasant times to explore the beachfront is in the morning, when the winds are often still.
Whale Watching: From the back deck, from Mar through the end of May or longer, one can see California greys spouting. And, sometime, a cow and a calf spend a couple of days feeding in the deep waters just off the beach.
The hot-tub area has fantastic views of the Pacific ocean often with large waves crashing on the beach and, at night, starry skies .
The kitchen has stainless-steel Cuisinart cookware (gas cooktop).

Spectacular View from Quaint Cottage
This was our second stay at Cliff Cottage. The views are unbeatable, but we also really love the home itself. It seems much larger than its 1,400 sq ft, due to many large windows, light colors and high ceiling.
The deck is spacious, running the width of the house. Although you may not spend much time on the other side of the house, there's a charming, private garden at the front entry.
The floor plan is open, with views in every direction. There is plenty of seating, both in the living room and at the kitchen table. The counters are spacious, and with a view of the ocean, cooking is not a chore.
The second bedroom is a loft, which our daughters loved. There is no door, which might be awkward for two couples, but was fine for our family. It was convenient to have two bathrooms in a home of this modest size. The shower is large, and is shared between the two bathrooms. Frosted windows afford privacy while showering. The steam generator is very enjoyable, and helps keep it warm while reducing water usage.
The location is a few miles from Bodega Bay, which is far enough to make it feel quiet and secluded, while still being accessible. Its perch on the small cliff permits expansive views of the coast, and the beach is easily reached via a short walk down the road.
We look forward to our next visit, and would enthusiastically recommend it to a friend.
What an amazing location! We are two couples who spent 7 nights at Cliff Cottage. This house is situated on top of a small bluff overlooking a gorgeous beach. The great room has windows all around and you can stand anywhere and have a breathtaking view of the Pacific...it's truly magical. The wildlife we witnessed just sitting in the sea facing window seat was astounding...breeching whales, dolphins, and sea birds everywhere. So cool! The house itself is open and airy but intimate and comfortable. The kitchen appliances need updating but they are all in good working order. If you are a chef, bring your own knives because they are all in need of sharpening! The bedroom and bathroom situation is a bit awkward for 2 couples. One bedroom is fine, but the upstairs one which is actually a loft space lacks a closet, useable dresser, and a door. The bathroom is also a bit awkward because of the shared walk through shower. We managed to work it out though and it was liveable. Also..be prepared to do some laundry at some point because each person gets just one towel. The location is convenient to Bodega Bay which is a cute little town with some good seafood places. We also went north to Jenner to the The River's End which was quite good. It's over an hour's drive to wine country, but we found it worth it to come home to that spectacular view! Can't wait to return someday!
Cliff house vacation.
We spent 6 nights at Cliff House for our 26th anniversary. View is phenomenal, neighborhood is very quiet. Cliff Avenue with a view of Wrights Beach in my opinion is the best location in Bodega. The house was well equipped, especially the kitchen. My suggestion would be to totally update bathrooms, change the outdated lamps in master bedroom and do some painting. We visited three other properties on cliff avenue that were very updated. This house is very charming and we would not hesitate to return. We scheduled two days in San Francisco and didn't want to leave cliff house for the city. Great vacation.
We greatly appreciate your thoughtful suggestions to update our vacation rental called Cliff Cottage. Earlier this year we had the dining room floor refinished; and, our very next project is to update the bathrooms you refer to. I look forward to finding out if you agree with the changes we make the next time you stay at Cliff Cottage.
The Owners of Cliff Cottage
The view and privacy were perfect.
The view was worth every penny. We considered looking for a property closer to the beach level but, this was better. Quiet, secure and private--it was perfect. Someone put some thought into the home's architectural design. It was well done. The view from the kitchen was inspiring. If you are planning to cook, bring your own chef's knife!!! Overall that is a minor complaint. Some updating of bathrooms and painting in the kitchen would give this a 5 star. But the view trumped all. Our 25th anniversary couldn't have been better.
Actually a 4-1/2 Star!
My husband and I spent 3 nights in this beautiful "Cliff Cottage" and hated to leave! I would have given this a 5 star review but that would mean it was virtually perfect, and that is rare in these type of vacation rentals. Location deserves 5 stars, as does decor, amenities, layout of home, proximity to ocean (a short 3-5 minute drive to beach) and view! The hot tub and steam shower were added bonuses! Easy booking (always check for "deals") and friendly management. One unusual, but nice thing, was the drawers and cabinets were all labeled (i.e., pots, pans/bowls/silverware/large cookware, etc. making it easy to find everything. Directions and information came in a handy binder so everything was pretty much spelled out for you. View from deck was phenomenal and it was so nice having our morning coffee, or evening wine, outside sitting in one of the comfortable adirondack chairs or at the patio table. The front entryway was beautiful and welcoming, even with the drought. Safe and quiet neighborhood. Had a darling loft but we didn't use it since it was only the two of us; main bedroom was comfortable and quiet. We will definitely stay here again!
The wine-country is close at hand- Sonoma County offers some of the finest wineries west of Napa Valley. Also, close by is dining at its best- Terapin Creek and Blue water Bistro as well as River's End all within 15 minutes drive. Explore Occidental and its sophisticated and innovative gallerias; for an old-time, scrumptious meal, dine at Howard's for bunch; or, plan a trip there on April fool's day for a wacky 1960's style parade. Later in April, the annual Fish Festival in Bodega Bay has tasty food and hand-crafted treasures for sale. Whale watching is at its best earlier in the year.
Other Activities: beach combing, hiking, bird watching
Golf: The Links at Bodega Harbour is a 4 Star Golf Digest “Places to Play” award winner and offers fabulous views of the Pacific Ocean. Less expensive courses are at Northwood Golf Club on the Russian River and Sebastopol golf courses all within 10 to 30 minutes from Cliff Cottage.
