This condo is named 'Topacio' which means Topaz . . . and it is truly a gem. Topacio is located in the charming village of Melaque and only a half hour from the Manzanillo Airport. The unit is one of 4 condos that comprise 'Casa Amatista'. Situated on the second floor, it overlooks a lush garden and pool below. It has its own private entrance from the street and is therefore quite separate from the other 3 units. The neighborhood is quaint and tranquil. . . and the best part is that Topacio is only a block from the beach.
Topacio features a spacious deck with a palm frond palapa roof that provides shade in the afternoon. The open floor plan of Topacio makes it an ideal place for entertaining and the large kitchen is a dream to work in. The living room with its high vaulted dome above provides the perfect place to watch TV, read or simply relax. The colorful and authentic Mexican decor make it a fun and fabulous place to vacation. Its amazing architecture and several stone walls add to the rustic flavor.
With the beach just down the street and a private pool to enjoy . . . it is the perfect getaway. We love the neighborhood and feel we are truly in Mexico. There is a nice mix of Mexican and North Americans who live there and lots of convenient stores and restaurants nearby. Most people walk or ride bikes and there are bikes on the property to share with other guests. Long stays are encouraged and it is an ideal place for those who are retired or semi retired. You may not want to leave!

My husband and I live in Kelowna, British Columbia. I am retired now and my husband is still working but we still manage to get to our place in Melaque every year. We LOVE all thing MEXICAN!
My husband and I enjoy learning about and experiencing the Mexican culture. We also love having people visit us there and watch their expression when they enter our colorful Mexican Hideaway.
Dana Webster purchased this condo in 2006
My husband and I met in Puerto Vallarta when I was working there in the 80's. We travelled at that time to the Melaque area and fell in love with it. We have been travelling there off and on ever since. When we decided to buy vacation property in Mexico 10 years ago we wanted somewhere that wasn't tainted by the commercialization of many beach resorts. Melaque still maintains that simple charm and beauty that it did years ago.
Our property is located in a wonderful little area of town called 'Villa Obregon' and we feel part of the neighborhood with Mexican, Canadian and American friends. We were attracted to the property because of its fabulous garden area with its palm trees and bouganvillia. We built this particular unit in 2006 and I decorated it with all the color and artifacts that depict the Mexican culture. We love entertaining in our beloved 'Topacio' and everyone remarks on the beautiful decor and warm feeling they experience when they are there. Our deck is amazing and we eat all our meals out there. It is truly our home away from home.
The unique benefits include:
1. The architecture and vibrant Mexican decor make you feel happy. The comfortable living areas and wonderful kitchen make it easy to want to stay home and relax or entertain.
2. The private pool is a great feature and it is only shared with the people from 3 other units so it is relatively private.
3. The separate entrance from the street provides extra privacy and makes you feel you are the only ones in the small complex.
4. You have everything you need in this lovely Mexican neighborhood: restaurants, laundry, small grocery store across the street. We are about a 15 minute walk to downtown and ride our bikes many times to get around. The town is safe and friendly and easy to get around.
5. Our typical day is having a wonderful breakfast (all that fresh fruit!) on the deck, head downtown to shop for fresh produce or go to the flea market and then in afternoon grab our beach chairs, a good book and take that one minute walk to the beach.
We are so pleased nancy and Brian had such a good time. She should be a travel writer. We appreciate all the wonderful recommendations she made.
It was a pleasure for my family to stay here for a week. It is beautiful, well appointed (had everything we needed in the kitchen), and in a great location. The pool is ideal. Great patios. The house manager, Javier, was friendly, available and helpful. Everything is clean and well maintained. Would recommend it!
The photos and descriptions on this site are completely accurate -- the owners have created an authentic Mexican gem in a sweet neighbourhood near the beach, but with all the things we gringos love on our vacations -- outdoor living, views, privacy, pool and gardens, full kitchen, cleanliness, everything in working order. You can feel confident in booking Topacio that you will love it. Also, the local people who help the owners maintain Topacio are amenable, available and on top of things. Nothing went wrong but we always felt that, if it did, we would be taken care of. Here's your day at Topacio: go across the road to the gym for a workout at 8am, then clean up and walk two blocks to La Rana for a good gringo breakfast (also great for dinner, lovely local family owners), then a block further to catch the bus to Barra (you can also walk the 2.5k there along the beach at the end of the block), where you can wander the shops before taking the free water taxi to Mary's for a fabulous seafood lunch. Then take the bus back, walk home, grab your book and hang in the pool until happy hour (the excellent book exchange is only a few blocks away -- open M,W,F -- don't miss it). Just before sunset, take a plastic chair or a towel (and your beverage) to the beach at the end of the block and watch the local kids play in the surf while the sun sets spectacularly (it happens every day). Then meander over to Maya for a tapas dinner to rival the best any big city has to offer. Later, dawdle over to La Officina for great live music with low-key dancing and schmoozing, then wander home through the neighbourhood, where real Mexican families are sitting out enjoying the cool of the evening. Do your first big grocery shopping at Hawaii downtown -- they will deliver you and your groceries home for free -- then visit the little store up the street for your daily needs, stop the Taco Taco man as he rides by with his cart, or cook your own in the fab kitchen. Best coffee at Taza Negra and don't forget the market on Wednesdays, both an easy walk from Topacio. We enjoyed the beaches at La Manzanilla (by bus from downtown depot; eat at Pedro's) and Cuastacomates (by taxi only, 60p, tell him what time to come back to pick you up, eat at Oso). Wish we were back there! (Note: It was very humid during our month in Melaque in Nov/Dec but Topacio has fans in all the rooms (aaahhh). Bug dope with DEET is also provided -- they think of everything!)
This was our first time in Melaque, we have many friends who have been coming here for years and years so we thought we should try it. This condo has everything!!! Right down to the fabulous Mexican décor which I felt was a must have. We had the pool to ourselves at this time, as it was a little to early to come. I would recommend December thru March for our next visit as the tourists aren't there yet and so most of the restaurants were not open. But lucky for us The Frog opened just down the street and his menu was great, as well as Esmerelda's and many places in Bara, a short cab ride away. The walks on the beach every morning and evening were wonderful, beautiful white sand for miles and hardly no one around. Lounging at our own pool was great, corona in one hand and a book in the other. What more could ask for. Just contact Dana and Jim and set up your next holiday in paradise. The two bedroom condo was so beautiful and clean and the staff so very helpful and friendly. All you need to do for your next vacation in paradise is contact Dana and Jim!!!! Thanks for a great time. Jan and Gord
Several outdoor restaurants are just around the corner. Laundry services 1 minute walk away. Several convenience stores a half a block away with fresh items, snacks, beer and sundry items
