Charming Restored Country Planter's Cottage

Bedrooms 2
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

A quaint 1836 southern Planter's Cottage tucked away in the lush countryside ten miles south of Natchez. Oakwood, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is one of few Natchez homes still owned by the family for whom it was initially constructed, and contains many of its original furnishings. Cattle are produced on this typical working plantation, which has been operated by the Sojourner family since 1814. Oakwood takes pride in being recognized by the State of Mississippi as one of its oldest family owned farms.

The restored cottage is one of Mississippi's unique residential essays in the Greek Revival Style, drawing architectural distinction from its finely detailed and well-proportioned Greek Doric facade. Among the unusual features of the house are the second story garret rooms and a pair of matching mantels that are unique in the Natchez area. No modern comforts and conveniences were spared in the restoration and redecoration of Oakwood.

The cozy two bedroom cottage is surrounded by rolling pastures, fish ponds and moss-draped oaks. A marvelous front veranda is the perfect spot for morning coffee and evening refreshments. Down-home southern folks will welcome you!

This 2500 sq. cottage offers two upstairs bedrooms, three full baths, a dining room, living room, kitchen, breakfast bar, utility with washer and dryer and sleeps 6.

The definition of serene

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I were visiting Mississippi for the first time (we're from California) and as we were plotting our route, I came across a listing for the charming plantation. What a find! Eight miles outside of Natchez, down a long country road, we came across this beautiful, serene home and we felt like we were a million miles from anywhere. A big front porch with rockers inviting you to sit a long spell greet you as you walk up the path and into the house. Our hostess met us at the door and gave us a brief tour of the house, including a short history. Make yourself at home. And we did. For the next three days, we enjoyed the serenity of the house and surroundings. The bedrooms were comfortable and sleep came easy. Being city girls, we truly had not experienced quiet as you do here. Our stay was much too short -- I could have spent just a day sitting on the porch and doing nothing. Whether you are looking for a quiet retreat, a house for a small group getaway or just want to experience life in the country, you can find no better location than this charming home.

Owner's Response: Hi girls! We Thank you greatly for your very nice comments about Oakwood! Pam, our hostess, told me how nice you were and how much she enjoyed having you! My Granddaughter graduated from Pepperdine year before last so I've experienced busy LA recently. I must say that I agree with you that the quiet peaceful serenity of Oakwood is very special! It is my Happy Place and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to share it with you. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Virginia Harrigan, Owner

Quaint plantation cottage

We loved our stay. The country side was beautiful. We enjoyed watching the cows, listening to the woodpecker and all the other birds. Cottage was perfect. Lots of room to eat together and rock together on spacious front porch. Complete privacy and wonderful hostess. Thanks for letting us stay.

Little Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

I'm not even sure where to begin to say what an awesome place this is!! From the owner who went above and beyond to help, to the gracious hostess. Do not hesitate to spend some time here if you are looking to get away from it all. This beautiful farm house sits in the middle of lots of land, boast a huge front porch with rocking chairs where you could sit for hours and listen to nature, birds singing, frogs croaking. My sisters and I and our Mom enjoyed a get away weekend at Oakwood and our ONLY complaint is that we hated to leave!! You will not be disappointed, I promise!!!!

Wonderful Stay at Oakwood, 2015

  • 5 of 5

Four of us on a lovely "girls' trip" weekend stayed at Oakwood and absolutely loved it! It is just as pictured, and we loved the house and the location. It was a perfect place to stay for our first trip to Natchez, and we will definitely stay here again if we get to return in the future. The house has been lovingly restored, and the accommodations are so comfortable. Beautiful setting, and the story behind the restoration is very interesting. We would definitely recommend this property!

Rented Oakwood for our trip to see historic homes in Natchez. Easy 15 minute drive to Natchez. House was super comfortable and clean, everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Would easily stay there again, no complaints whatsoever.

Girls Weekend at Oakwood

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Oakwood for a girls weekend get together. It was so peaceful and everything was so nice. The breakfast provided in the morning in the dining room was wonderfull. We enjoyed sitting on the porch and the lovely home interior. We plan to make another visit this year for our girls weekend since we enjoyed it so much.
