Kapoho House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

The CORAL POOL HOUSE, 'Kaheka Ko'a,' is a newer (2008) OCEANFRONT HOME with snorkeling and swimming in your backyard. It is directly on the shore of the WAI'OPAE STATE MARINE PRESERVE (Kapoho Tide Pools). Kapoho is a small, quiet rural community on the Big Island, near Hilo and 40 miles from Volcanoes National Park. The home has an awe-inspiring view of the 50-acre marine preserve and beyond.

**DISCOUNTS available - see Rates**

IN YOUR STAY AT THE CORAL POOL HOUSE YOU MAY EXPERIENCE:

* Unparalleled panoramic ocean views of coastline, marine preserve, reef, sea and night sky.

* Snorkeling in an extensive natural aquarium with a rainbow of fish and coral.

* Swimming and floating in tranquil pools.

* Modern accommodations in a new home (2008), including whirlpool hot tub and WiFi.

* Tropical scenery of the rural Puna coast.

* Clouds of stars in the night sky.

OCEAN VIEW: The Coral Pool House captures an expansive ocean view from its shoreline location. The living area, bedrooms, lanais (covered decks) and hot tub all have a panoramic ocean view. You can catch the natural rhythms of the day: sunrise, clouds painting the skies, tidal flows, waves crashing on the outer reef, passing whales (December - April), and sunsets while relaxing in the living area, beds, shaded lanais or whirlpool hot tub.

MARINE PRESERVE: The shoreline location of the Coral Pool House provides easy access from its grounds into the tranquil waters of the Wai'Opae (why-o-pie) Marine Life Conservation District for snorkeling, swimming and floating. The marine preserve is one of only 11 in the Hawaiian Islands. The preserves were established to protect the unique marine life of these special places. Wai'Opae preserve has among the greatest density and diversity of marine life of all the Hawaii preserves. The coral and fish-laden pools are home to 11 coral and over 100 fish species, and the endangered green sea turtle.

To quote the popular 'Big Island Hawaii Snorkeling Guide' (authored by two biologist who have snorkeled throughout the world), Wai'Opae marine preserve is '... a unique and fantastic snorkeling spot. ... one of the best snorkeling areas in the world... The pools are gorgeous. The visibility is usually stellar. The corals are diverse, colorful and in incredible health. The fish are abundant and diverse as well. Everything is up close and personal. It really is a wonderful experience.'

SNORKELING and SWIMMING: The grounds of the Coral Pool House meet the sea where you can slip into its tranquil coral pools. The pools offer fabulous snorkeling, for the beginner to the experienced. The inner pools are calm 360 days a year due to the protective outer reef. Thermally heated fresh water seeps into these inner pools, making them noticeably warmer. They are ideal for swimming in, as well as snorkeling, or for those who just wish to float and relax. Outer pools may be enjoyed by the more experienced snorkeler, offering greater density of corals and some fish species not seen in the inner pools. Large predators (like sharks) are absent due to the shallow barrier reef.

The outdoor solar shower offers a warm rinse when exiting the pools. On the grounds of the home is a shallow warm pool (80-85 degrees), great for those experiencing snorkeling for the first time or for kids to play in. Children may be observed at play from inside the home, the lanais or patio. We provide some snorkeling equipment (masks & snorkels), boogie boards and information on marine life that you will encounter.

NEW OCEANFRONT HOME: The Coral Pool House offers the comfort of a MODERN FULLY APPOINTED HOME while taking in its exquisite natural setting. All rooms and the upper lanai have open beam ceilings. Family dining may be enjoyed indoors or on the lanai. The ocean breeze keeps the home mosquito free. The covered ground-level patio, near water's-edge, is an enjoyable place for a picnic. Meals can be prepared in the modern fully appointed kitchen (granite counters, cherry wood cabinets) and on the lanai's BBQ. The whirlpool tub is a wonderful place to relax and 'soak' in the view.

The home's bedrooms have new quality beds and en-suite baths, with a deep soaking tub in the master bathroom. The master bedroom has a king bed. The second bedroom has both a queen and double bed.

The home also has wireless internet, phone, satellite LCD flat screen TV (pause/record options), DVD, CD, stereo, cards, board games, videos and books for your enjoyment. The home's caretaker lives nearby, in the community, and is available if you need assistance.

LOCAL ATTRACTIONS: Tropical landscapes offer stunning scenic drives along the coast, cascading waterfalls and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you can pull yourself away from the Coral Pool House, a drive along the SCENIC PUNA COAST is not to be missed (beginning one mile from the house). Nearby, there are several other scenic drives, hikes and parks, including a large thermally heated swimming pond (2 miles). The historic village of Pahoa, with shopping, groceries, fresh fish and farmers markets, and restaurants, is 10 miles away. A 40-mile drive takes you to Volcanoes Park, with its active volcano. Other volcanic features may be experienced closer to Kapoho, such as: Lava Tree Park (7 miles) and Kalapana (15 miles), where lava is flowing into the sea.

Although tropical, Kapoho has the least rain in east Hawaii. We also enjoy some of the cleanist air in the world.

The area is served by the Hilo International Airport (29 miles). Hilo has many options for shopping, dining and entertainment. You may view several picturesque waterfalls on the Waianuenue River, which flows through Hilo.

Further information on the Coral Pool House (Kaheka Ko'a), the Wai'Opae marine preserve and local attractions will be provided following your booking. In addition, for those that stay with us, we are pleased to help you with your travel plans, based on our local knowledge. Please inquire if you have any questions and visit or web site

About Jim Johnston

Gail and I (Jim) live in Kapoho. We enjoy living in the quiet rural community, snorkeling in its clear-calm waters and exploring the rural Puna Coast.

Jim Johnston purchased this house in 2008

Why Jim Johnston chose Pahoa

Many years ago on a visit to the Big Island we discovered Kapoho. Wai'Opae marine preserve offers the best snorkeling we have experienced. Its clear-calm waters are like snorkeling in a large fish and coral-laden aquarium. We also enjoyed the rural, non-touristy, nature of the area with many places to explore. We were so enchanted with Kapoho and the snorkeling that we purchased property directly on the shore of the marine preserve and built a vacation home where we and our guests can step right out of the house to go snorkeling and swimming.

What makes this house unique

The Coral Pool House is one of only seven oceanfront homes directly on the 50 acre Wai'opae marine preserve. It is the only new home and was designed to capture the breathtaking ocean view from every room. From the grounds of the home you can slip into the Wai'Opae marine preserve for a fabulous snorkeling experience. Due to the protective reef, the pools are rarely affected by high surf conditions that can commonly spoil one's snorkeling adventure elsewhere. The preserve offers variety in your snorkeling experience as you move from the inner pools, near shore, to those near the reef.

The ocean view from the home is magnificient. I especially enjoy watching the sunrise as it paints the sky, relaxing in the hot tub while soaking in the ocean view, and grilling a dinner of fresh local fish on the lanai BBQ. I never get enough of watching the interplay of sea and land directly from the home or while hiking and driving along the scenic Puna coastline.

Too nice to leave

  • 5 of 5

Three adults spent 4 nights. One of us had stayed at this awesome house several times before but two were on their first visit to the islands. We could not pull ourselves away from the house except to get into the water just steps away to snorkel in the natural aquarium of the tide pools. The view of the ocean, sound of the waves, and the brilliant stars at night fully entertained. I have lived in Hawaii 35 years and am confident that this is the absolute best waterfront rental in the whole island chain. On the day we checked out, we had a late flight so we could visit the Volcanos National Park and Rainbow falls. I am puzzled why most visitors choose the filthy air on the Kona side. The air in Kapoho is the cleanest air in the world.

Great waterfront home with fantastic snorkeling feet from the backyard.

  • 5 of 5

I was looking for a comfortable beach home away from the bustle of the city and this was perfect. The amenities were great, the view of the ocean was great, and the sound of the surf was always relaxing. We like to snorkel and having one of the best snorkeling spots on the island a few feet from the home was perfect. If you want to stay right near the city then this may not fit your need but it was exactly what I was looking for and highly recommend it.

Paradise on Earth

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an eight day stay at Coral Tide Pools house and could not be more satisfied. Our family of three was able to rest and recharge in this lovely and secluded setting, while experiencing stunning sunrises and sunsets daily. My son's favorite part of the trip was snorkeling in the pools; I enjoyed the privacy and laid back atmosphere of the quiet side of the island. While CTP is a trek away from the nearest town, proper planning of meals and grocery shopping on the way eliminates unnecessary trips out. The kitchen and living area are well appointed and you can enjoy meals inside or out. The bedrooms, baths, hot tub and washer/dryer are located upstairs, with an exterior stairway connecting the two floors. All rooms face the ocean with multiple windows and doors that can be opened to enjoy the cool ocean breeze. The house is not air conditioned, but it did not appear that any other houses in the area were either. While I was initially concerned, the house cooled quickly by turning on the ceiling fans and opening the doors and windows. We ventured into Paula for a couple of meals out, enjoying Kayleo's and Boogie Woogie Pizza. Must see's are Volcanoes National Park and the active lava flow at Kalapana. This was a major trip for us and we enjoyed every second of it! I highly recommend the Coral Pool House for those seeking a quiet and private vacation. Many thanks to Jim for his responsiveness and information.

Absolutely Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

WOW!!! We have been blessed to have the opportunity to travel to many wonderful tropical places, but have never experienced anything like the Kapoho Tide Pools; such a unique phenomenon! AND, to be able to enjoy them everyday – just a few steps from where we stayed - was just incredible!

The Coral Pool House is SO special. It is very quiet, comfortable, well-appointed - and then there’s that view – OH MY GOODNESS! From the lanai, from the kitchen, from the living room, and even from the bed, you look out over the lovely tide pools.

We usually took part of everyday to do some sightseeing – north to Hilo and the waterfalls, and a couple of days to tour Volcano National Park. But we always began and/or ended our days by snorkeling the Tide Pools. For us, there’s just nothing more peaceful, or enjoyable, than effortlessly gliding through calm, clear water while a multitude of colorful, inquisitive fish dart around and beneath you.

We’d read some pretty negative comments about the Kapoho Tide Pools, and the Hilo area in general, so were a little trepidatious about our decision to stay on the east side of the island for a week. As it turned out, it was a FABULOUS decision, and one of the highlights of our 3-week Big Island adventure.

The east side of the island is breathtakingly beautiful, I am SO thankful we didn’t miss the opportunity to explore it, AND the Kopoho Tide Pools.

Amazing location, very rustic town

  • 3 of 5

We spent 10 days at the coral pool house at the beginning of June. The tide pools are spectacular, the lava rock can get very slippery and is sharp so I suggest wearing dive booties or very sturdy water shoes. Fins are totally unnecessary, even just get in the way, and are more likely to cause damage to the sensitive corals in the area. Pahoa town (10-12 minutes from the house) is old Hawaii with wooden sidewalks, a few restaurants - Kaleo's was our favorite. Definitely the rainy side of the island so be prepared! Now to the house. The jacuzzi was a welcome relief after many days of snorkeling and if the wind/rain picked up it was extra nice! Just be prepared, all the stairs are external - even from the living floor to the bedrooms and it is very easy to lock yourself out of the living floor and be trapped upstairs! When this happened to us the spare key wasn't where it was supposed to be, but Loyd came to our rescue with little delay. The bedrooms upstairs are odd in that they open to the open air hallway more like a hotel than your traditional house. Loyd is the onsite caretaker and he is AWESOME. He totally saved our trip. The house did not have a book with any information or suggestions of activities or restaurants, but Loyd was more than happy to give us the rundown of what to do in town and within an hours drive of the house. Be prepared to drive everywhere if you don't plan on just hanging out and snorkeling at the house. Hilo and Volcano are super fun day trips - we did both and loved it! We had some trouble with bugs - but that is to be expected in Hawaii and on the rainy side. All in all, a great place to just get away from it all. Hit the grocery store for basics like vinegar, spices, meats, and soy sauce but plan your trip so you can get a lot of fruit, veggies, etc at the Pahoa farmer's market on Sunday mornings! If you want a place where you have activities planned each day beyond snorkeling, cooking, and maybe hitting Pahoa town for dinner, I suggest staying somewhere more resort-like, but if you like to keep it simple this area definitely is for you.

Owner's Response: Aloha, Victoria We are sorry that you were not completely satisfied with the home and, apparently, unaware of the many things to see and do nearby. The home design is unique: opening the home to a spectacular view by blending indoor and outdoor space. We fully recognize the importance of visitor information to enhance our guests experience. We provide comprehensive information to all our guests. In addition to the many places identified in our VRBO listing (keyed to Google map), we provide our guests a link to our website: an insiderś guide to Kapoho. We encourage them (as we did you) to review the guide for planning their trip. The guide contains information (descriptions, directions, photos) to more than 20 things to see and do (largely within 15 miles of Kapoho): water activities, scenic drives, hikes, lava viewing. farmer´s markets, restaurants, entertainment and more. Maintaining the information in a website enables us to insure up-to-date information is accessible to our guest, both prior to their arrival and during their stay in Kapoho. We pride ourselves on our responsiveness to our guests. We make every effort to answer their questions and respond quickly to any unforeseen issues, as we did for you.
