GREAT VACATION PLACE
THIS HOUSE WAS COMFORTABLE, CLEAN, LARGE ENOUGH FOR 3 FAMILIES. IT WAS CLOSE TO STORES, RESTAURANTS, AND ICE CREAM. IT WAS CONVENIENT TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK AND BAR HARBOR. MY FAMILY IS LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING BACK FOR ANOTHER GREAT WEEK.
Fantastic house in prime location
We just returned from our stay at Central House, and our party of eight had an amazing time! The house is set up perfectly for a larger group, with plenty of space to either be together or retire to private quarters. The three teens especially loved having the top/3rd floor to themselves ... a little apartment all their own. The house was equipped with everything we needed for a comfortable stay, but we admittedly didn't do a lot of cooking. We used the location as a springboard to explore Acadia and were not home much during the day (but enjoyed being back at the house in the evenings to watch the Olympics together). After visiting Bar Harbor, we were very glad to have chosen the "quiet side" to stay in! You can't beat the location. A few of our favorite "close by" things were being able to walk to Beal's for lobster (a 15 minute walk), Little Notch Bakery in town (for delicious pizza) and a 2 minute walk for popovers at Common Good (by donation, to fund their soup kitchen efforts). We loved the hike on Acadia Mountain and then swimming across the road at the Echo Lake Ledges (less than a 10 minute drive). Most mornings started with coffee on the front porch. We hope to be so fortunate to travel back to Acadia in the future, and we'd stay at Central House again in a heartbeat!
Perfect home away from home!
Oh, my goodness! Central house met all the needs of our four-generation family group. From 1-74 years of age, everyone was happy. The house is well-equipped and well located in town. Barbara and her husband are very friendly, welcoming, and clearly understand the needs families will have. She even provided a high chair for our grandson.
A heart-felt "thank you" goes out to this couple!
This is a great place to call home when away from home!
We have been to MDI many times and love SW Harbor, but this was our first stay at Central House. What a treat! The house was plenty big for us and our 4 kids, and could have easily accommodated more people. There was ample parking in the back for both of our vehicles. The kitchen was very well-stocked with every kind of cookware we could have wanted, as well as spices, flour, tea, microwave popcorn, soup, and more. The kitchen sink and dishwashers are ultra-modern/professional grade. We greatly appreciated the washer and dryers in the basement, as well as the fact that there was laundry detergent and fabric softener. Everyone loved the showers.. each of which had 3 shower heads.. very luxurious. The upstairs apartment was incredible. While we did not make full use of that space (did not use the kitchen, for example), it would have worked perfectly if we had brought another family on vacation with us. The router for the wireless internet was located on the third floor, which made the connection great if you were on the 3rd or 2nd floor.. not always so great on the first. This might be remedied by moving the router to the 2nd floor? We also enjoyed sitting out on the porch. The location is great if you like to be in town.. we were able to let the kids walk down to the playground unattended, walk to our favorite restaurants, walk the dog to the emergency vet, get to the downtown shops within minutes, etc. We also enjoyed walking to the homemade jam/bread stand.. the kids ate about 2 loaves of homemade bread per day! If you are looking for a super-quiet, remote rental, this may not be the house for you.. while the traffic (car and foot) was moderate, it was fairly consistent. Overall a very pleasant stay, and we would recommend Central House without hesitation.
Loved our stay here!
We loved staying at Central House. We had 4 kids and 4 adults and everyone was very comfortable. The teenagers stayed in the apartment on the top floor so they had their own space, the grandparents stayed on the first floor and everyone had their own bathroom. The house was well-furnished. The bathrooms were quite deluxe and the beds were comfortable. We especially loved the front porch for reading and relaxing. We were less than a block from the charming town center of Southwest Harbor and we enjoyed patronizing the restaurants, shops and market there. We were a very short walk to the Island shuttle bus as well. We highly recommend this house.
The Ideal Getaway
We cannot say enough about Central House! The house itself was beautiful. All of the bedrooms were very spacious and they each had a fantastic en suite. From the lovely hardwood floors to the fabulous homey kitchen to the windows that opened to let in the fresh air - this house was perfect. The location of Central House was ideal. We could walk to the town and there were a number of excellent restaurants for dinner. The house was only 20 minutes from the National Park and Bar Harbor, but Southwest Harbor was very peaceful. We were able to meet Barbara at Central House, which was an added bonus. She showed us around the house and gave us helpful information about the area. We loved the house and the area! We would definitely stay at Central House again.
Southwest Harbor is located in the middle of Acadia National Park on the southwest corner of Mount Desert Island
