About the property

Villa, 4 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 4 Baths, (Sleeps 8)

Welcome to Villa Southern Exposure!

The upstairs/downstairs layout provides two separate and spacious communal living areas with large deck which makes this home perfect for families with children, or separate groups of couples wishing some ‘private space’. And of course, the raised deck pool, surrounded by beautiful native stone and coral walls and an array of colorful bougainvillea, alamanda, hibiscus and palm trees, will keep both adults and kids entertained for hours.

Southern Exposure offers panoramic St. John ocean views and trade wind breezes. There is a second, lower-level covered deck that offers dining and sitting off of the lower sitting room.

The separate cabana’s newly covered deck area provides yet another private lounging space, as does the main house master bedroom’s private deck.

About Mark Shekleton

We own a software company in South Bend, Indiana with a focus on ERP systems. We live in the country on 12 acres with ponds, woods, orchard and lots of gardens. We keep very busy at our home in the warm months taking care of the property, and love the outdoors! But once or twice a year, we can't wait to return to the sunny charms of Southern Exposure.

Mark Shekleton purchased this villa in 2001

Why Mark Shekleton chose USVI/St. John

We fell in love with St. John on our 1st visit. This home was a perfect fit for our family. The location is secluded yet only minutes to restaurants, shops, recreations and beaches.

What makes this villa unique

The roads are paved which makes it easy for us to jog every morning. Our neighbors are friendly and make us feel right at home. If we don't feel like getting out, we've got all we need right here at 'home'. It's very relaxing and private.

Great home for our family trip!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a week long stay in this beautiful home! It had everything we needed and then some! We were a party of eight ranging from 9 to 70 years young and this home was perfect! Plenty of room to spread out and expansive decks and kitchen/living room to all get together! Also, the view was amazing! It was a short drive to all the groceries/restaurants/shopping in Cruz Bay. Mark was excellent! He picked us up at the dock, took us to our rental car and then up to the house we went! We took full advantage of the grill, deck and pool! Our party of eight could fit comfortably in the pool and it was a great way to cool down in the evenings! We really enjoyed out time at Southern Exposure and can't wait to come back!

Owner's Response: You speak to the appeal of this beautiful Island 'ages 9 - 70'. Our Father of 91 years young has visited many times and loves St. John! Southern Exposure is perfect for families and large groups as you attest to in your review. We are always glad to hear about our guests experiences.Mark is very attentive to our guests and takes very good care of our home. We don't know what we would do without him!

Just another two weeks in PARADISE

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this property the first two weeks of April 2014 and had a great time. Southern Exposure is in an ideal location for a family - not in town - but not far away from town. Great views of Fish Bay, and a quiet safe neighborhood. Great home layout - as sleeping arrangements feel as if you are in 4 different houses - yet you are all staying at the same property. Plenty of privacy for couples - and great for families. No problems with any mechanicals - and we never had to call the property manager to fix anything the whole time we were there. Given the price point that this property rents at - it is really a great value for St. John.

Owner's Response: We have a great property manager that takes very good care of our home. As well, as being available to the guest if they need him. Being away from the town center, has it's advantages, especially in this quiet hard all day, then come home to a quiet relaxing evening on the deck, where you can grill a wonderful caribbean dinner!

Family trip

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 spent a week at the Southern Exposure. The house was perfect for our family with young kids. The younger 2 liked having a fun bedroom just for them and our older child liked being able to have her own space as well. Loved that there was a pool at the house and the kids could swim while we relaxed. The views from the deck were incredible! The kitchen was equiped nicely with everything we needed to cook for the family. We took a fishing charter out and were able to bring home dinner to cook on the outside grill. What a great week it was! We went to a different beach every day. I am positive we will be back! Thank you for providing a great home for our vacation!

Owner's Response: We always enjoy hearing about "family" experiences. This is just a reminder that not only does St. John have lots of beautiful beaches but there are other activities to chose....such as fishing! We stock a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor grill, so you can bring home your catch and eat it too!

Five Stars

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived – all our needs and desires were met. We felt a little guilty with all the pampering..but quickly got over that feeling. We had viewed Southern Exposure on line and when we arrived it was just as it was depicted on the website. The location was very private and lush. Mark(property manager) got us situated gave us a quick tour of the “compound” and went over the map of the island. He gave us excellent tips for snorkeling – we followed his expert guidance and we were not disappointed. We are casual when it comes to dining – as are our two teenagers. The grill and the coolers were fabulous timesavers. As other reviewers have noted – the outdoor shower was the family favorite. I can’t think of anything that we needed that wasn’t available. All our dining experiences were great and our 19 year old would tell you drinking a beer before noon – priceless! Our 14 year old was a master at snorkeling by the end of the week - this was his maiden voyage. The pool was such a wonderful way to extend and end the day. If you need a vacation that is based on relaxation and beauty – this is it. The only thing I would have changed about our vacation is I would have extended it by a week. Great family experience…a tip to those traveling with teenagers.. don’t get cell coverage and tell them texting isn’t an available option either!! You will not be sorry.. We can’t wait to go back..

Owner's Response: Our property manager (Mark) is a great source of information for activities on and around the island. Cell phone coverage is spotty around the island.....but hey, you are on vacation! We love hearing about our guests experiences!

Great house for our family's stay on St. John!

  • 5 of 5

Southern Exposure was the perfect house for our family's first trip to St. John. The location was great, quiet and private but only about 12 minutes to the main town of Cruz Bay and 15-20 minutes to the beaches. We packed a lunch in the cooler (provided at the house) every morning and headed to a different beach every day. We visited the beaches of Cinnamon Bay, Maho Bay, Caneel Bay, Hawksnest, Salt Pond Bay, Trunk Bay, all beautiful and unique and never crowded. Each of us had our own favorite. (FYI, Maho Bay was perfect for young kids because the water was very calm.)

We also did a half-day sailing trip with Sail Safaris that took us to Henley Cay (I think that was the name), a deserted island with a beach and good snorkeling. The Westin resort is less than ten minutes from Southern Exposure, and we went there a couple of times to use the beach (and beach bar!) and the playground.

My husband and I enjoyed dinner by ourselves at Asolare (our favorite) and ZoZo's. Eating out can be an adventure with our crew, but we all enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Rhumb Lines. We were disappointed by the food at The Fish Trap and would not recommend it.

Back to the house, there was more than enough room for my husband and me, our three boys (ages 8, 6, and 4), and our teen-aged babysitter. In fact, we never used one of the bedrooms. The house was clean and well-maintained and was accurately described in the listing and photos. The owner was very friendly and helpful in answering our questions via email and providing information about the house and St John in general. The pool setup is good for young children because the pool is about three feet higher than deck level (accessible by stairs and a ramp), so it's less likely that a kid would accidentally fall in. Our boys played in the pool every day and loved it. The view from the deck is beautiful! I would definitely recommend this property to others, especially families with children.

Owner's Response: Nice comment on the pool being raised above deck level. That certainly has it's advantages when young children are around. We strive to keep this home 'family friendly' and appreciate the confirmation from this family's review. We have been to all of the restaurants mentioned in this review but did not have the same experience with The Fish Trap as these folks. The beaches are usually not crowded but finding a parking spot near the beach can sometimes be challenging; heading out in the morning is a good move.

We Can't Wait to go Back!

  • 5 of 5

I have been to Southern Exposure in beautiful St John, VI twice & am excited to be planning a third visit! My husband & I spent our honeymoon on St John & we stayed for a week at Southern Exposure. The house is beautiful & very accommodating. The hosue manager met us at the ferry dock & gave us a ride to our rental jeep then took us to the house & showed us around & answered any questions that we had. The house was well maintained & very clean with plenty of bath & beach towels. An iPod dock, dvd, tv's, books, wireless internet, & cd's were all available. The house is within minutes to the beaches & downtown Cruz Bay with lots of great restaurants but because the house was so relaxing, we enjoyed spending time there & the kitchen was well stocked (pots, pans, blender, salad spinner, grill, spices, cook books, etc) we spent 1/2 of our evenings cooking wonderful Caribbean meals & eating on the deck overlooking the breathtaking views of Fish Bay. The swimming pool was a great way to spend time soaking & relaxing after dinner. The master cabanna bedroom with the outdoor coral shower was an added bonus. The island & this house are all about relaxation & beauty. We absolutely loved our time there & cannot wait to go back! I have recommended Southern Exposure to friends & family & if you get a chance to stay at Southern Exposure, it will be an opportunity you will not regret!
