Why Mary Jo chose Smoky Mountains

This house is nestled in the woods with gorgeous views and a flowing waterfall. The sounds of nature permeate your surrounding. It is secluded for those who seek a quiet nature setting but it also is located in an area where you can venture out and find the 'thrill' that only this area can bring! That's why I had to have it!!

What makes this house unique

Privacy, privacy and privacy!!!!

Hiking, shopping, wineries and dining out too : )

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great house! Great area! There is so much to do in a weekend! Loved hiking down to the gorgeous waterfall covered in snow. Tubing at the Scaly Outdoor Center was awesome. Highlands is a beautiful mountain town. We will definately be back!

Private escape to nature that is minutes away from adventure

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful home and property. As for the actual home, our favorite parts were the absolute privacy, the porches, and the nearby waterfall and "butt" tree. As for the area, we really enjoyed visiting several beautiful lookout points and waterfalls (Dry Falls was very easy to get to and so pretty); eating wonderful food in fun, nearby restaurants and also at "home" using groceries and the great kitchen tools available; and zip-lining at Highlands Aerial Park. The home was stocked with neat antiques and surrounded by gorgeous woods and the sound of the nearby waterfall.

We took this trip alone (just my husband and me) to celebrate our wedding anniversary, but we can't wait to plan a return trip with our kids. We know they'll love the adventure of the woods right outside the beautiful home, and we'll enjoy continuing our exploration of the area and property.

The only issues we had were self-created. We drove in too late, and in the dark it was hard to navigate the road that took us to the property. We stopped at the neighbors house assuming we had reached the end of the road. If this happens to you, just know the gravel road continues AROUND the neighbors' wood shed and you will dead-end into this property. Arriving so late and having no blinds or curtains on any of the windows was also a little spooky, but after seeing the property in the daylight the uncovered windows no longer bothered us because we were so reassured as to the privacy of the surrounding area.

Looking for peace and quiet?

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a nice quiet place to relax and refresh, Mary Jo's house on Scaly Mountain is just the right place. We rented her home because our nephew was getting married and our family prepared the rehearsal dinner. When looking on VRBO, I used two main search criteria: dog friendly (if they can't stay, we can't stay) and near Dillard, GA. Mary Jo's place gave us that and so much more. All tucked away in the forest, the property is absolutely gorgeous - from the beautiful gardens around the house all the way down to the waterfall. The house has huge decks on both floors that look out over the waterfall. The house was so homey and comfortable - we just felt like we were at home...in a much more beautiful setting. My husband and I will definitely be back soon (if Mary Jo will have us again) when we don't have to work on a rehearsal dinner and wedding and can simply sit on those decks and look out across the mountains to admire all of God's beauty.

There is hiking, shopping, winery and many great resturants near by. The house is minutes away from Highlands Aerial Park which has the zip line canopy tours of the Blue Ridge Mountain range. There also is the Scaly Mt. Outdoor center which offers summer and winter fun (Summer tubing and snow tubing, ice skating, trout fishing, Bungee Trampoline). There is plenty to do for ages!
