Charm, comfort, scenic beauty, and hospitality

  • 5 of 5

I echo all the good things that the other reviewers have said about Lynne and the house, and add the following: Many thanks to Lynne for providing a list of what was in the kitchen before we arrived so that we could plan accordingly. I really wish other homeowners would follow this model of hospitality. It's so sane... To other guests: I recommend that you set up a separate receptacle each for paper, cardboard, plastic, and metal, and just separate as you go during your stay. If you have a dog, save one of the yellow shelter island garbage bags to collect your poop bags in. It will all make your life much easier with the tricky rules that the island has for trash.

The layout of the house is good for together-time and alone-time. There's a door between the living room and the dining area, so chatters can sit in the dining room and chat without disturbing tv watchers in the living room (and vice versa). The kitchen has a bar/counter separating it from the dining room and another doorway off to the front entry and living room. If you have a dog or toddlers that benefit from a gate or two, this first floor layout is perfect for you. The study on the first floor has a trundle bed and its own doors out to the deck. There are two bedrooms upstairs as well, so introverts can easily escape to solitude. The deck is also well-designed for gating off.

Another aspect of the house worth mentioning is the assortment of books on the shelves. Norton anthologies, John LeCarre novels, Sherlock Holmes, social commentaries, histories, and more. If you're a reader and you forgot your kindle, this house probably has something for you to curl up with and read (or re-read).

We visited off-season never had to wait more than 5 minutes for a ferry (bring cash and take advantage of the same-day roundtrip tickets). A lot of the restaurants on Shelter Island and also in Greenport were closed, so our choices were limited. What was available is pricey, but good. Good burgers at the Shelter Island House Tavern for a reasonable price. Lunch at Stars Cafe, and dinner at the Red Maple. I also recommend taking a drive around the whole island to see the scenery and the gorgeous houses. Frontline your dog before coming. Tick warnings everywhere.

Many many thanks to Lynne for being so gracious, communicative, and helpful. I hope we can return sometime. This is a wonderful house on a beautiful island.

Great house, great owner, great island

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful time on Shelter Island in this cozy home. The home is set back in a cul de sac on a beautiful pond. The inside felt like home right away. The island is so peaceful and the people so friendly we are missing them already. The owner Lynne could not possibly have been any kinder or more accommodating for my family during our stay. Hope to be able to visit again in the summer months.

A perfect escape

  • 5 of 5

The moment you leave Greenport, a charming town, and step on the ferry to Shelter Island, you feel yourself begin to relax and breathe. The trip is just long enough to enjoy the views and the water, but in a short time, you've arrived in Shelter Island Heights, as picturesque a place as you can imagine, with its huge Victorian hotel. I came by car, but it's also possible to bicycle, and even walk, to this lovely house from the ferry. It's in a bucolic setting - lots of lawn and trees, and a garden near the pond. But the house itself is charming and comfortable. The kitchen is handsome and fully equipped (I loved cooking there); the downstairs has an office/spare bedroom with its own bath, a living room and a dining area that faces the pond. The huge "back" porch is the perfect setting for reading and watching deer and rabbits scamper across the lower lawn.

Upstairs is warm and homey with two bedrooms and a shared bath. Awake or asleep this house is

a perfect place to relax. And while I was there, I was able to go to the beach and to a lovely, if a bit pricey, restaurant across from the beach with a very European feel to it. I was also fortunate to be there while the Itzak Perlman music program was on and got to attend a wonderful concert in a sublime setting.

Shelter Island may be the least commercialized place I've been to in a long time. Whether you bicycle or drive, you are overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the island -- I felt while I was there -- that I was living in another era but with all the comforts of today. I plan to return again to see the foliage.

Car: recommended

3 kayaks and life preservers, children's toys and games.

The best restaurant is Vine Street Café and the second best is Salt. The locals hang out at Bob's Fish Market/restaurant with fresh fish but limited sides - Inexpensive and good, not fancy. It is also where you get the best fish to grill in the back yard along with the best stuffed clams on Long Island.
