Overview

About the property

Gorgeous and airy 4br cottage in quiet setting with great views & private dock.

This beautiful and meticulously maintained cottage comfortably sleeps 8 with an updated, classy Maine decor and offers great sunsets across nearby islands. Check our website by clicking on the link below. It is located on a quiet cove and named for the osprey that soar above looking for fish. It is 4 scenic miles from downtown Boothbay Harbor, an adorable Maine village full of great shops, restaurants, bars and ice cream. The cottage is a fresh, quiet Maine getaway minutes from all kinds of fun activities, a dream vacation spot! It's a mile to the amazing Maine Botanical Gardens! Located at the end of a private road on beautiful Sawyers Island (accessible by car! No boat needed!) in Boothbay, Maine, it sits ten feet from the ocean. Recently renovated, the cottage is light and airy and offers lots of privacy. Unlike many Maine cottages it is fully equipped with all of the amenities you would need and want including hi-speed wireless internet and cable. It has a fully equipped eat-in kitchen with ocean views and is thoughtfully furnished with 100% cotton sheets, fresh new towels and new mattresses that are incredibly comfortable (this is so important to us when we travel too!). The grounds are perfect for those lobster cook outs and heated croquet games. This cottage and setting is the exact setting you've been dreaming of and the dock has provided our own children with their private star gazing spot, try it.

The large master bedroom has a queen size bed, high-end reading lights and private sitting area (we all need to escape now and then...). The cottage has a dock and float (with swim ladder) to make kayaking, looking at the seals or picnicking on the islands and water sports an easy pleasure. The dock is accessible by boat at quarter tide or above and flats out for part of the tide cycle. For boaters there is even a mooring included with the cottage! Cozy up infront of the gorgeous wood stove and there is a heating unit as well. The Boothbay Region offers a wide variety of summer activities and diversions and is near great shopping in Freeport and LL Bean. Portland is an easy hour and 15 minute drive from Boothbay. The ferry to Monhegan Island leaves from Boothbay and is a favorite day trip. Camden and Rockport are also easy and fun day trips from the house. It is a destination vacation spot for those in the know looking for a quiet relaxing time.

About Charlie Birlem

I am a recently widowed retiree (but not 'over the hill or so our kids tell me anyway), who grew up in Maine and have fulfilled our dream of retiring home to Maine! This cottage was our family cottage and we raised our children with summers here (this is a photo of myself and our new granddaughter, Norah). I am from Southwest Harbor, on Mount Desert Island and come from a long line of sea captains who resided on Cranberry Island. So I understand the beauty of Maine and know much of what couples and friends are seeking in a vacation. I live in the Boothbay area and am available whenever you need but I am an unobtrusive home owner! I hope you come and enjoy the magic of Osprey Watch!

Charlie Birlem purchased this cottage in 1985

Why Charlie Birlem chose Boothbay Harbor Area

This is a stunning, private and quiet setting on desirable Sawyers Island (accessible by car). It is near the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the unique Trevett Country Store, yet not far from 'downtown Boothbay Harbor'. There are many opportunities for walking, photography and kayaking from our float. We are surrounded by islands and there are many seals on the ledges just off this setting. You will hear them barking at night.

What makes this cottage unique

The views are always interesting and vary during the day as the cottage faces southwest. Evening sunsets can be spectacular and there is a good deal of boat traffic across the head of the cove - both tour boats from the harbor and local fishing boats.

Home Away From Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife, dog and I vacationed here the week of Labor Day, and are already looking forward to returning again. It truly felt like our home way from home, with every amenity one needs and more. The cottage was thoroughly clean and comfortable, providing the perfect place to sit in the quiet and watch boats go by, or serve as a jumping off point to downtown and the many wonderful parks and trails the area provides. Charlie was great and offered some tips for attractions / things to do / etc. I definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking to experience Maine in an ideal setting.

Perfect launching point for an active exploration of Maine's beautiful outdoors.

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 with kids aged 14, 12,10, and 5 love outdoor adventures and Maine doesn't disappoint. This cabin was perfect for us. Four bedrooms and plenty of living space for our big family, plus our own private dock and deck! We had kayaks delivered to our cabin and used them everyday to explore nearby public (but deserted) islands. Seals came close to our dock daily (they really do bark!) and we were enthralled by their cuteness. The cabin also has a hammock and plenty of toys that my kids used in the generous sized yard. The location at the end of the street and cove offered perfect privacy and we explored our yard and the rocky shore undisturbed. The kids also loved exploring the mudflats at low tide. It is an easy and beautiful drive to downtown Boothbay Harbor. We recommend going to Wannawaf and the Ice Cream Factory daily! The owner, Charlie, is so kind and leaves a notebook on the area with lots of resources so you can maximize your stay. The cabin is 100 years old but has been beautifully updated and maintained without losing it's charm. We loved it!

Exquisite waterfront cottage at the end of a quiet, private lane.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented for the Memorial Day weekend and had our kids and grandkids visit for part of our stay. The house was so thoughtfully stocked with everything needed for a pleasant, relaxing stay. Every room was flooded with sunlight with wonderful water views. We relaxed on the float and watched the seals come to play each day.

The living room windows overlook the water so no matter what the weather is you can enjoy the stunning nature surrounding this place.

Charlie, the owner stopped in to introduce himself and made it clear he was nearby to help. However the place was so well thought out, we never needed a thing.

My husband and I both highly recommend this lovely home and we hope to return. The bedrooms are lovely and very comfortable. The linens were fresh and nice. When we first arrived we were surprised that the place seemed bigger and roomier than the photos suggest.

The grandkids had a wonderful time playing in the yard and with the various toys they found. We never once turned on the TV...too much else to enjoy!

This area of Boothbay is gorgeous with spectacular views in every direction. It was an easy trip into town and so close to the Botanical Gardens.

Everything about the place was perfect.

Great girls get away!

  • 5 of 5

What an amazingly beautiful stay this was! It was so cute, clean and comfortable inside and the views outside the windows were just gorgeous! Charlie was so great to work with from the first phone call when we were inquiring to the early morning help we needed with directions to the home. Charlie went above and beyond to make our stay great! The memories we made with our mom we will forever cherish and laugh about for years to come! Maine was picture perfect during our Oct. visit. We will definitely be back!

As good as we remembered!

  • 5 of 5

This was the second time we had the pleasure to stay at Osprey Watch and it was as good as the first time! The setting is perfect, quiet, peaceful, end of the road, on the water - what more can you ask for. There were even several improvements done since our first visit (new deck area) and the on-demand hot water system works great! Overall it was a great week, Charlie was a great host and we hope to be back again!
