This Historic Old Hawaiian style home was built in 1890. It is situated on 1 acre of land directly overlooking Hilo Bay. A large covered Lanai allows you the prestige first class views of the morning sunrises, surfers, canoe paddlers and ocean loving individuals who frequent the ocean throughout the day.

Whales can be seen jumping starting as early as March.

Garden like setting offers an abundance of tropical foliage such as plumeria, ginger, Ti leaves, lime tree, orange trees and banana. Enjoy what the the Lanai has to offer with outside seating for lounging and afternoon tea, or a glass of red wine.

This home is a five minute walk to Historic downtown Hilo crossing the famous iron bridge locals call the ' singing bridge'.

About The Owner

Aloha! I am a local resident born and raised here in Hawai'i. I have happy dogs, several chickens, goats and horses. I still love to ride my horse, go the beach and simply be with my family. You can often find me working around my home and tending to our animals. I love to travel, and enjoy the simple things in life.

The Owner purchased this house in 1890

Why The Owner chose Hilo

This was my grandfather's home which later became my mother's home of which I was raised in. It offers the splendor of the yester-years. My family has been in Hawai`i for over 6 generations. I am happy to share the Aloha of this beautiful home with others, the Hawaiian way.

What makes this house unique

Each room is unique with furnishings from the past such as a Koa 4 poster King size bed, and twin beds dated back as far as 1900's. High ceilings throughout the home. Hand painted floral designs on the walls in the living room, dinning room and family room. Koa panels surround the family room. Simple kitchen well equipped that leads to the laundry room, twin beds and back yard.

Wonderful historic home full of character!

My family enjoyed 4 nights and 5 days in Hilo and stayed at this wonderful historic home located on Hilo Bay near the downtown area. The back porch is one of a kind, with steady breezes and spectacular views of the bay and sunrises. The home has all of the rich character of a home built and remodeled over many decades. While it does not have AC, fans in every room and breezes both day and night kept us comfortable (screens on all windows). We used the kitchen for breakfast and an occasional lunch and dinner. Part of the charm was the eclectic furniture, artwork, and cookware and service ware in the kitchen. Bathrooms were authentic with older fixtures that conveyed the sense of the history of the home. We enjoyed walks into town for shopping and restaurants, and to the nearby Japanese Garden on the other side of the bay. The location is perfect for driving to nearby sites of interest up and down the west coast of the big island as well as to the Volcanoes National Park (which was largely closed during our visit). We had a wonderful stay and recommend this home to adventurous travelers looking for a special and out of the ordinary place to stay.

Wonderful view of the bay; so convenient to downtown Hilo.

Hale Alani was a fantastic place to stay. Plenty of room; easy access and easy drive to everything in Hilo or up the coast, with the convenience of a full kitchen. The hospitality of the owners was outstanding plus we learned the history of the house. I'll miss the large lanai overlooking the bay, where I loved to sit in the late afternoon.

Historical Hawaiian home with a lovely and welcoming hostess.

The house is beautifully maintained, close to the center of Hilo, but removed from all its hustle and bustle. The gardens, lanai and view are wonderful and relaxing. Our hostess, Pudding, welcomed us the first day and shared the history of the house, which was built by her grandfather. She had left us fresh fruit and eggs in the kitchen. She also called in a reservation to a restaurant for us and bought dessert for us. The house has all you could need, from laundry, kitchen and grilling to beach supplies. It was always a delight to return "home" each day. Mahalo!

Location, location, location

There is not a more beautiful place to stay in Hilo. The house is full of history and vibes of historic old Hawaii. We were very comfortable and enjoyed the property. Even though Madame Pele had begun her current activity we hardly noticed that the volcano was erupting. Pudding checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed. The house is well appointed with all of the necessities and then some. As with any property historic property, especially one that is subject to lots humidity there were some expected glitches, like windows that wouldn't open. There is no AC but if the house is open there is a lovely breeze that kept it comfortable enough. If you are looking for a true feeling of old Hawaii and are not expecting plush, new amenities this is THE SPOT. By the way, Thanks for the eggs from your chickens, they were delicious and the cookies were enjoyed as well. We had one of the most memorable times of our lives! Thanks for everything!

The house is closed to downtown but in very quiet area.

Beautiful ocean view and nice backyard garden.

We would love to stay here again.
