About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

La Maison Verte is far more than a rental property, it is a home for living in; warm, well-equipped and welcoming. It is South-facing, in the oldest part of a medieval village. It is set on the original fortified village wall that connects it to the 11th Century Abbey. The tiny little lane outside the house is too narrow to allow more than the occasional car.

The house falls within the conservation area of the village, amongst houses dating back to the 16th century.

La Maison Verte is a place of charm and comfort, quintessentially French in its fabrics, furnishings and pictures. The dining room has a wonderful old farm table, and fireplace. There is a very well-equipped kitchen. The house also has a walled garden, tables under the loquat tree, and a tumbling wisteria over the terrace. Glorious at most times, but best enjoyed in the evening sunshine, with a glass of local wine. The view is lovely and looks towards the Pyrenees. There are three good sized bedrooms and two bathrooms.

We were very lucky to stumble across Caunes-Minervois which is one of the most beautiful villages in the Languedoc. Those who discover it invariably love it and some who come for a brief holiday end up staying for good. Fifteen couples who have stayed in La Maison Verte have bought houses in and around our village.

La Maison Verte is filled with treasures found in the local antique markets; original French drawings, paintings, posters and photographs. There is an excellent library and masses of CDs.

Of all the hundreds of villages in the Languedoc, Caunes-Minervois is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful. Besides the famous Abbey, we have good restaurants: a baker, a bank , a working cafe: and no fewer than three wine-makers right within the village. The Black Mountains are outside the door, there is cycling and golf and walking; and the people of Caunes are amongst the friendliest anywhere.

Keywords: Village House in the South of France, with garden and views.

About Ingrid HUDSON

The house is owned by Ingrid Hudson, a photographer turned restorer, with a passion for finding old ruins and making them breathe again. Christopher Hope is a writer of novels and stories.

Ingrid HUDSON purchased this house in 1998

Why Ingrid HUDSON chose Languedoc-Roussillon

We fell in love with this beautiful part of France with its Cathar castles, ancient villages, great wine, food markets and abundant sunshine. Both the World heritage sites of the Canal du Midi and La Cite in Carcassonne are less than twenty minutes away. Albi, too, has been declared a World heritage site as has the Toulouse Lautrec Museum.

What makes this house unique

An hour's drive to the Mediterranean coast and a bit more to Spain. Carcassonne is just twenty minutes away, Albi and Toulouse and Carcassonne are within easy reach. What is wonderful about this peaceful village is that it has four restaurants, bank, butcher, two bakers, chemist, 3 doctors, a tapas bar in summer, concerts in the abbey and an ever-helpful tourist bureau. Three private wine estates right in the village.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"It is a rare surprise when a destination is even better than expected, and this is certainly how we felt on entering your beautiful home. It is obvious that much talent, time, thought and love went into the design of this wonderful house. You have created a welcoming, warm and very personal retreat. Thanks for everything and best wishes."

One of our Best

  • 5 of 5

We stayed five weeks at Maison LaVert to celebrate our 60th anniversary. With two sons and wives plus our grandson they each stayed about two weeks with us. The home is very French and all of us thought it a perfect place.. Everything provided in the house was excellent. We ate lunch or dinner on the Terrace when home with beautiful views. The Village is charming, the restaurant, Table d'Emilie a treasure. Ingrid Hudson i a wonderfully helpful owner. All of us treasure our time there. We have been all over France but no experience surpasses this visit.

Superb Hosts, Superb Home

  • 5 of 5

Honestly, our stay could not have been better. We only had two weeks in this idyllic setting but we felt so comfortable, welcomed and able to relax.

We were exhausted on arrival but Christopher was there to meet us and show us around the house. We all fell instantly in love with this beautiful home. Books, treasures and art work abound. The kitchen was superbly equipped so we could try out all the 'must do' French recipes. The beds were comfortable, with generous linen and towels to cater for a family for a full two weeks. Comfortable chairs and sofas ensure many choices to sit around and read or play games.

We arrived on Halloween and along with a lovely bottle of wine to welcome us, Ingrid also left sweets in-case any children knocked on our door.

Ingrid and Christopher happily made suggestions according to what we wanted to do and their knowledge and love for the region was always in evidence. There is so much to do! The Cathar castles are awe-inspiring and the local villages and markets just gorgeous.

The communication with Ingrid through the booking process was clear, helpful and friendly and both Ingrid and Christopher answered all of our questions during our stay.

We thoroughly recommend this holiday experience for anyone looking for a delightfully presented home in a truly gorgeous part of the world.

Village life really is this good!

  • 5 of 5

Two years ago we stumbled upon La Maison Verte via the internet, and stayed for a week. This year we returned and everyone asked ‘but why go to the same place when there are so many other options?’ Well, this house is not just any house…

Set in an idyllic garden with the old community washing building, the Lavanderie over the back wall and overlooking the village veggie plots and the 8th Century Abbey, La Maison Verte is full of fabulous books and treasures and brimming with the lives of its interesting owners. The furnishings are a wonderful collection of treasure, put together with an artist’s eye over years of living in the home. All the modern conveniences are there, sometimes hiding behind a strategically placed curtain, so it is the ideal mix of old and new. And the library means you don’t have to even leave home to explore!

Ingrid is an ever attentive host whose knowledge of the area is outstanding and this makes all the difference between an ok stay and a memorable holiday. On our 2 month stay at La Maison Verte we made many friends and enjoyed being part of village life. Day trips to Toulouse (amazing markets), Albi (Toulouse Lautrec Museum), Minerve (must see Cathar site), Mirepoix (Mediaeval marketplace), the Canal du Midi and many tiny villages around the area for wineries, markets and rondonees meant that two months flew by and we hated leaving. If you are looking for a perfect base to explore the amazing history, food and wine of this area, you have found it!

Relaxing, quirky house with everything you need for a perfect holiday

  • 5 of 5

Arriving in Caunes Minervois we were struck by the quietude. It has been years since I have felt a sense of excitement about accommodation on holiday – falling into the habit of using accommodation as a base. La Maison Verte is different.

We choose La Maison Verte on recommendation from friends who had thoroughly enjoyed their stay here. We were not disappointed. As you enter the house your senses are instantly tickled by the look and feel of the place. The joy is in the detail. I’d describe it as an old French-style farmhouse. Paintings line the walls and there are lots of nooks and crannies to explore and books galore. The house is made up of two living rooms (TV, tuned to your region), dining room, kitchen, two double rooms (one en suite), a twin room, and bathroom. The layout is very quaint and unique with little steps up to each room. We were just relieved not to have any tipsy injuries on the staircase!

The house is kitted out with every kitchen utensil you need as well as the essentials like oil and seasoning and Ingrid left us some herbs freshly picked from the garden. The house is a lovely place to cook in and eat dinner. We ate outside – on the veranda and down in the garden where there is a big table. The garden gets plenty of sun and is surrounded by the olive trees and flowers.

The house is a very relaxing place to spend time in. There were six adults staying here and it is big enough so that everyone could sit in a different area and enjoy complete solitude. There’s also WiFi so the bragging types amongst you can rest assured that you’ll be able to upload your holiday snaps online or google the quickest way to the winery.

Ingrid and Christopher were always on hand if you needed them (they kindly printed our boarding passes for us) but they weren’t intrusive.

We went to la boulangerie in the mornings and had lunch at Hotel d’Albert. (Lovely place and experience but food wasn’t quite as good as anticipated).

There are bikes provided so go for a cycle out among the vineyards and canals. Take a picnic and call into a winery for a bottle of wine or two. We loved calling in, attempting to speak French and tasting the wine.

We’d recommend going to Las Tours where you take a 45 minute hike up the hill and explore four castle turrets from the 11th and 12th centuries. This “hike” is suitable even for those who aren’t used to exercise. We also loved exploring caves in the area and Norbonne is a nice town with a market and beaches nearby.

Exceeded Expectations !

  • 5 of 5

Having seen the gorgeous pictures advertising this property, we expected quite a lot, but the reality when we saw the house and garden, exceeded even our expectations and in truth as good as the photos advertising the property are they don't begin to do this lovely house justice.

On arrival, we received a really warm welcome from the owner who showed us around the house and explained where all the local amenities were.

The village of Caunes-Minervois is stunning and between the village amenities and the house our every need was catered for. We made several trips whilst we were here, Carcasonne, Minerve and Sete and after a long day sightseeing, it was a pleasure to return to Caunes and this lovely house each evening.. We were here for a week and my only complaint is that it was not nearly long enough.......................................

Beautiful home on peaceful village

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for one week in this wonderful house. Everything was just as shown and described. The owner has taken care of every detail so that you can just relax and enjoy the lovely region. After a busy day exploring the area, we loved coming back to sip wine on the terrace while we planned our next adventure!

Caunes, our village, is in the centre of the historic Cathare region. There are mountains and markets, ancient hill top villages, castles and small towns all close by . There is wonderful cycling (we have 4 bikes you can use), walking from right outside your house and into the hills and vineyards. Two World Heritage sites are within twenty minutes of the village; La Cite, an amazing castle in Carcassonne, and the wonderful, winding Canal du Midi. There is a superb golf course twenty minutes away. There are dozens and dozens of winemakers in the area. There are olive orchards and cheese makers. Fresh food from the markets is to die for.

Fly into Toulouse and hire a car from there. Or fly into Carcassonne. Trains to either Narbonne or Carcassonne.

Notes:
La Maison Verte is in the heart of a medieval village of ancient houses, narrow streets and intriguing corners. It is peaceful and very quiet and yet there are cafes and a few restaurants, a shop and, of course, two bakeries. There are wonderful markets and historical sites to visit nearby. It is never touristy or too busy. The countryside around about is heavenly.
