Casa Cielo, The Dwelling

Located on 40 acres of high-desert pinon juniper terrain on an open canyon ridge, this retreat vacation home floats above the Montezuma Valley. Off the beaten path, the only noise you might hear is the occasional contented mooing of grazing cattle or the yipping of skittish coyotes on graceful moonlit nights.

Your separate dwelling features two bedrooms ( 2 queens), 2 baths, and an open kitchen-living area. The large expanse of encased windows let you contemplate the geologic intersection between valley, mesa and mountains. A sleeper couch in the upper-level open den which looks over the canyon from your front door can accommodate two additional people. A second building on the premises can be used for an additional dormitory or retreat space.

Personal guided fly-fishing trips with a resident master-fisherman and therapeutic massage sessions are available upon request. Enjoy our private hiking/mountain bike riding trail for those daily cardio workouts by stepping out your back door. The separate 400 square foot meeting hall can be used for secluded creative endeavors such as writing, music, meditation, yoga practice or other quiet activities.

The Locale

Need to escape your daily routines and hectic schedules? Get creative, get quiet, or get active with unparalleled, thrilling, year round, outdoor experiences in a locale that offers hiking, biking, skiing, 4-wheeling, fishing, canoeing and rafting as starters.

In a more northerly direction, only an hour and a half drive away, is the glamour and glitz of the transformed mining town and ski area of Telluride. This Victorian vintage-style village is world famous for its annual outdoor music, arts, culinary and wine events, and film festivals.

Rich in First American cultures, we are within half a day’s drive to the pueblos of northern New Mexico and their festive feast days and unique artistic expressions in pottery, silver-smithing and upright loom weavings. Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque bring the colorful architectural and art influences of the old country of Spain and its more modern expressions through its mingling with southwestern traditions and landscapes.

About Jeanne Cain

Leonard and Jeanne Cain were drawn to New Mexico and southwestern Colorado by the crystal clear skies, aspen and pine forests and rivers with their majestic red rock canyons. After working in rural health care clinics, they moved to the Cortez area where Leonard had a family medical practice. Mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, skiing, and fly fishing have been a few of their passions.

Their many years of zen study are reflected in the open quiet spaces they have built and the sculptural ceramic and fiber arts Jeanne currently pursues. After 35 years of living in the southwest, the family is eager to share their enchantment with this retreat setting and rich cultural crossroads of native american life, cattle ranching, and outdoor splendors.

What makes this house unique

This quiet setting allows you to contemplate expansive vistas of mesa and mountains or catch the migrations of elk and deer foraging on grasses up to your windows. A shared hot tub lets you take in even greater views on star lit nights of the Milky Way and orbiting planets. Early morning or evening walks on the private trail built by the creator of Phil's World, a nationally heralded biking park, is a soothing and easy amble through sage brush and pinon...

It was a delightful house with a beautiful view. We saw deer almost every evening.

I would definitely return. The location was good for visiting many of the Pueblo ruins in that area. The house was clean and comfortable. Jeanne was a wonderful hostess and most accommodating. It was in the country and so quiet, which was nice.

Beautiful, Quiet Home

  • 5 of 5

This comfortable home is situated remotely, giving us the most amazing view of the stars that we've seen in a long time! And it still only took us 25 minutes to reach Mesa Verde the next day. Very ideal. It was clean and the kitchen was very well equipped. The owner, Jeanne, was also very helpful in figuring out what to do when we realized we were coming before the cliff dwellings would be open for tours, suggesting we could also see Hovenweep, which was a great idea. Thank you!

Casa Cielo is exquisite!

  • 5 of 5

For peace and tranquility, Casa Cielo is the perfect destination offering expansive landscapes that include a view of the sacred "Sleeping Ute" mountain. Casa Cielo offers all of the comforts of home while surrounded by absolute beauty. We saw bald eagles and a large herd of female elk from the large dining room windows and experienced the most amazing sunsets everyday of our stay. Mesa Verde is a short drive away as is Telluride & Durango ski areas, Utah's Canyonlands National Park or The Four Corners area. Great location and an amazing place. Our hostess Jeanne is a gem! I will certainly go back. Thanks Jeanne for your warm hospitality.

nice setting beautiful home

  • 3 of 5

The house was nice and clean, beds comfortable. We got in late and thought it was weird the house was cold. The heat was set at 55 degrees and since it was freezing outside the house felt really cold. Also, the water heater was not turned on so we didn't have warm water the first night and didn't figure out we needed to turn on the water heater until late into the second evening. We felt like it was either a mistake or owners were trying to pinch pennies....

Owner's Response: I'm so sorry we didn't catch the fact that the water heater was turned off which is customary when the casa is not in use. Any concerns should be immediately brought up to us, as it's our intention for you to have a comfortable stay, and it would have been remediated immediately. Once again, sorry for the inconvenience and always feel free to contact the proprietor for any problem.
