Can't beat the view and private pond

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for 6 nights and had a wonderful time. There were 7 of us (6 adults and 1 child). The patio you see in the photo was our prime hang our area, and why not, it's got the view of the ponds and the ocean!!

The private (shared with neighbors but not public) pond was so amazing. It was great for all of us especially my 5 year old and his grandmother who has a bum knee. Very easy to get in and out of. The pond is well stocked with at least 20 different kinds of fish we counted, and an eel. You'll find the water to be "oily/cloudy" but this is because of the fresh water springs (cold) and the warm salt water mixing together. The further you get out, the less "oily" it gets. The local Champagne Pond is accessible from the back yard, but my dad & brother went in it and said it wasn't as good as our pond, so I didn't waste my time.

The living space layout is good, the back room is very nice and private. The front middle room has windows that open into the living room for air circulation, but then there's no privacy or way to block out the sound. We slept in there with our 5 year old which worked out fine since he was up the earliest he didn't wake anyone else up. The 3rd room was good but a bit small, but had a double bed. The game room was fun, for the 5year old, another place to play, but we didn't use it much.

Plenty of towels, swimming equipment to borrow . The kitchen is pretty well stocked with that you need. We didn't have enough bowls, but lots of pots, pans, utensils, rice cooker, toaster, coffee maker.

The access to the place (because it's a private road) was little funky at first, but you get used to using the gate pass and openers and then you are totally used to it.

This place is super close to the Wai Opae Marine Life Conservation District tide pools, only 5 minutes away, so we went 3x. It's about 10-12 minutes from the Lava Tree Forrest.

We'll miss watching the sunrise and sunset from that patio!!

Great for Family Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is our families first time at this house and second time vacationing in this area.

The house was clean with all amenities and kept in good shape. It is not a luxurious palace with granite, fancy tile/furniture and stainless steel appliances, but sufficient enough to relax and enjoy what Hawaii has to offer for vacationers.

The well covered Lanai had a great view of the private lagoon, Champagne pond and the Kapoho Bay. It also had a nice table and chairs that we used more than the dining room table for meals. Don't forget about the propane BBQ that we used a few times to enjoy the famous Redondo's Red Hot Dogs and BBQ Pork Ribs with Hawaiian seasonings we picked up at Foodland market in Kea'au.

We had many Gecko sightings inside and outside the house which our 7 year old loved the most and counted a whopping 72 sightings during our stay. The house had plenty of fans to help cool us mainlanders off at night when sleeping.

This house is in a gated community and also has a gate to get into the driveway from the street. The neighborhood is safe where you could go on walks during any hour of the day/night to enjoy the weather and scenery and everyone you pass along the way smiles and waves.

The house is in a good location for traveling to fun and exciting parts of the main Island on the East & South side like downtown Hilo, the Farmer's Markets, Volcanoe National Park, Kalapana lava walk, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, Pohoiki Bay, and numerous parks and waterfalls.

The warm private lagoon was stocked with many types of fish, and what you did not see in the private lagoon you could see in Champagne Ponds next door. The private lagoon is safe for young kids and they supplied snorkel gear plus floaties and boogie boards so the kids can have some fun when they want a break from snorkeling. We were lucky enough to be there during the King's Tides and watch big waves splash up against the lava rock walls around the Bay. Nearby are the Kapoho Tide Pools, perfect for snorkeling and picture taking of Coral and larger fish.

We recommend this house for a family who want to have a memorable and relaxing vacation.

A few days in an other world!

  • 5 of 5

What a spectacular place to stay if you enjoy having the sea tide litterally in your front garden! We loved the snorkeling in the pool with fish in all colors, shapes and sizes living in the pond. Even a large and a medium sized eal turned up one day out of the blue -quite an amazing experience! The house is fully equiped in an appealing way, so we felt totally comfortable and very well taken care of by Sophia. The location at Kapoho turned out to be absolutely ideal for us to explore the Island. We already miss it!

Paradise Indeed!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent the last week of April in this unique spot and had a wonderful experience all around. Sophia was terrific to work with and made us feel very welcome (even had a lovely bouquet of flowers waiting for us).

The house is just as advertised and is a "real" Hawaii getaway. It is an older house but was clean and comfortable with everything we needed.

For us the Pond was a huge bonus!! We snorkeled every day, and were just as amazed each time. For us older folks (64-74) it was perfect, warm water, clean, incredibly easy access and convenient, yet there were hundreds of fish of every type you could think of. My husband thought it was like swimming in an aquarium. We also visited Volcanos Park and got to see Kilauea "splattering". Great Farmer's market on Sunday near Pahoa. Also surprisingly good restaurant in Pahoa - Kaleo, would highly recommend it. Great home base to visit the less touristy side of the island and really relax. Frogs "chirping" at night might be annoying to some, but we almost found it charming and got used to it.

Would love to take our family here someday!! Thank you Sophia!!

We Loved Our Stay!

  • 4 of 5

This house was an adventure in the very best way. The view is incredible, and the kids loved snorkeling in the ponds adjacent to the property and at the nearby Kapoho tide pools. The house was clean and had every amenity we looked for including extra snorkel gear and a pristine BBQ for enjoying dinners on the deck. This was a perfect base camp for our adventures that was hard to leave each day. It feels remote and away from the cities and resorts. Town is eight miles away, with good grocery stores and restaurants. We enjoyed Pele's for breakfast, New York Pizzeria and Paolo's Bistro. Sophia was responsive and helpful with all our questions. Great location for exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and for a night bike ride to the lava flow from Kalapana.
