Come experience being an Off-Gridder!
Wildrose Station is perched at the rim of the ancient sea, known today as Mono Lake, where the high desert sage meets Pinon pine forest.
Wildrose Station (named after the original owner's radio handle) is a safe haven, private, with a road gate, perfect as a writer's retreat or romantic getaway on 40 acres.
The house has a bird's eye view, nearly 360 degrees, over Mono Lake, it's volcanic islands, the Mono Craters, the White Mountains (Bristlecone trees) which border Nevada, wrapping around to Mt. Tom, to Mammoth Mountain ski area, June Mountain ski area, the Minaret range within the Ansel Adams Wilderness, high peaks of Yosemite National Park, up to Lundy and Virginia Lakes and Dunderberg Mountain.
The historic ghost town of Bodie is just a few miles in the hills behind the house. To the east of Mono Lake, herds of wild horses roam.
This 1600 square foot home, with it's open, studio-like floor plan, expansive views and late light, offers spectacular sunrises, moonrises, alpenglows and stargazing.
Each season abounds with recreation--just out the door-- or an hour to Mammoth Mountain; half an hour to June Mountain ski area. Summer days are long...great birdwatching, kayaking, canoeing, wildflower viewing and hiking in the nearby canyons, fly-fishing, mountain biking, four wheel driving. The autumn usually offers California's most spectacular fall colors in aspen clustered canyons nearby--a photographer's paradise. Hot springs are accessible year-round....some just to the north outside of Bridgeport and others southeast of Mammoth Lakes and Benton Hot Springs.
Winter days at the house are surprisingly warm inside while the great outdoors offers some the best back-country skiing, alpine at nearby June Mountain( 30 minutes) & Mammoth Mountain(55 minutes) ski areas, and out the door cross country skiing, as well as California's own ice climbing at nearby Lee Vining Creek canyon and at Silver Lake (June Lakes).
The largest nearby airport is Reno, Nevada, a two and a half hour drive from the house. Mammoth Lakes-Yosemite Airport is an hour's drive south.
For short term stays consider our other property, the historic Dutch Pete's Ranch, near Benton Hot Springs.

Living full-time at Wildrose Station for nearly a decade was paradise! As a single woman I felt very safe and could really relax after a long day/night around many people at the Mono Inn roadhouse. I am thrilled to be able to share this place with special guests who enjoy the solace of wide open spaces, away from populated areas. It's an ideal writer's retreat. I used to ski in and out of the house in winter up the 1/2 mile driveway, take memorable walks with my dogs around the Bodie Hills and canyons. Many fond memories.

Soothing and comfortable place
The Wildrose station is an amazing place, with one of the best views I had from an accommodation in my entire life. Of course, the house is isolated and if you are looking to go out and get dinner every night at a new restaurant, you shouldn't go to mono Lake in the first place. If you are looking for place that feels like home, comfortable (with all the cooking appliances you would need) but transported in an environment that makes you feel connected with nature, this is the place! While I have not met Sarah, I can say that she was a charming host. She gave all the information prior to our arrival and was there when we needed to contact her. We want to go back!
Thank you Paul, for your thoughtful review. I do hope to have you and your wife back to Wildrose Station again one month soon. Warmest wishes, Sarah
Can't wait to return
My friend and I had wanted to spend more time around Mono and I can't imagine a more perfect place for it. As others have mentioned, the setting and views are unbelievable, and the quiet is almost unimaginable (for a city dweller, anyway). We scuttled plans for a few day trips just so we could spend more time at the house. Lots of great walks and bike rides right there; wonderful birds and wildlife... couldn't ask for more. (Getting zoomed by nighthawks while enjoying dinner was a high point!) It was absolutely perfect.
I hope you return one month soon too. (:
Extraordinary and unique.
Our stay at Wildrose Station was truly exceptional. It is one of the most memorable places at which we have ever stayed. Everywhere you look- inside or outside- it is beautiful: unbelievable views without another house in sight, sun streaming through the windows, and exquisite, comfortable furnishings. The home is equipped splendidly with everything you might need. The library is amazing. No wonder we didn’t ever want to leave the house! When we did tear ourselves away, the Sierra trails were within easy access, and so was the marvelous Mono Market in Lee Vining. The peace and quiet of the house, the utter silence except for bird calls, and the setting are marvelous. We could not have wished for a better get-away, and we cannot wait to go back.
Thank you, Ann. (:
Exquisite Quiet, Great Access to hiking, House was perfect
The two of us were immediately won over to the house and location from the website description and were not only not one bit disappointed but found everything to be even better that we'd expected. In fact it was so wonderful for us to be in the house and on the terrace that we hardly wanted to budge. The house was well kept, clean, stocked with necessities and extras that are often not part of rental properties. The library kept us up at night and entertained over morning coffee. It was easy living for a week in a completely off the grid, solar house and the lack of that little high pitched squeal from the electrical wires in standard US homes was part of the magical silence that we so adored. We ate at the Tioga Gas Mart and had a great meal, otherwise pretty much ate at home. Lee Vining Market is excellent. Hiked Saddlebag Lake and Lundy Canyon but didn't quite make it to Bristlecone in the White Mountains to the East. Next year. Great ranger station on 395 in Lee Vining. Mono Lake is super weird and strangely beautiful with easy walks. A visit to Bodie brought the reality of the "ghost town" down to earth with the history of gold and silver that swept through CA.
This was one of our most memorable and enjoyable trips for its combination of serenity and access to great activities. Can't wait to return.
See you soon...thank you!
Perfect spot– scenery, silence, open space
This is a great place for those that love the outdoors and are looking to get away from the bustle. The setting is spectacular and the house takes full advantage of it, with large windows all around. Spend (lots of!) time on the patio and you'll have the advantage of open space, as if you were camping out, but with the ease of home. Rustic style but with modern features, the house is well-equipped and all works well; the owner is easy to work with. Plenty of good hiking, from the Bodie Hills, just behind, to the Sierra, a short drive away. And, of course, lots to explore around the Mono Basin. Highly recommended for those that dont need conveniences/night life right near by.
It's been so long, but thank you for sharing your experience! (:
Birdwatching, four-wheeling, ghost town, archeology, wild horse viewing in area equestrian set up available at other home. There are hot springs in the Bridgeport area.
