Overview

About the property

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 7)

Old country southern charm is the feel of this delightful cottage that dates back to the early 1900s. This cottage called 'Magnolia' is tastefully decorated with wonderful antiques and period furniture that give it a casual country feel. Along with its sister cottage 'Maple' (vrbo #162157), and now the newest addition 'Mulberry', this cozy guest cottage, surrounded by forest, is on the north side of Tallahassee on the beautifully Canopied Meridian Rd adjacent to Alfred B MaClay State Park and Lake Overstreet Trails. Across the street is Forest Meadows Athletic centre with Tennis courts and swimming pool (open summers). Enjoy the melody of birds, crickets and cicadas throughout the day and see the deer in the morning and evening from the front and back porches furnished with comfortable wicker couch and chairs.

Tallahassee is the State Capital of Florida and has the downtown Capital Buildings just 7 miles away, as well as governor's's mansion, museums, and Imax theatres. Shopping and airport close by. Antique shopping is available in the quaint towns of Havana, Monticello, and Quincy(20-30 mile drive).

Check out the beautiful southern plantations on the way to Thomasville, Georgia only 30 miles away. Just 20 miles to Wakulla Springs State Park and 60 miles from the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. Lake Jackson is just 3 miles away.

About Diane Roorda

The owner has an interesting story in that she was born in the Netherlands, grew up in Canada and has lived in Tallahassee for the last 35 years where her children grew up. The Dutch background spells the importance of cleanliness; the Canadian background spells the gift of hospitality; and the south spells relaxed and casual. So the 3 C's: cleanliness, comfortable and cozy best describes what you will find in each of the 3 M's: Mulberry, Magnolia and Maple cottages. The owner has made lots of good memories on this 3 acre property. We stay here to celebrate various holidays with our 10 grandchildren. The space outside has room for outdoor games and cookouts and the cottages are comfortable and cozy

Why Diane Roorda chose Tallahassee

This property provides a place for me to enjoy my gardening hobby. I have planted many flowers, shrubs, fruit trees so that there is something blooming and something to eat year round. During the winter the oranges are delicious and a great way to start the morning. In addition there are lemons, kumquats, figs, loquats, persimmons and even some blackberries and mulberries growing.

The camellias are growing and will start flowering in December so there is plenty to see and enjoy.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is located next to a state park that offers 900+ acres of woods and trails to walk. The wildlife is fun to watch and the house has the feel of stepping back into another century

Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Felt like being at my grandmothers as a kid. Its cozy and welcoming. The property was perfect for our children to run and play. They enjoyed the fruit trees and the swings hanging from the trees. The owners are great and have done an amazing job in bringing the house back to life! It has a uniqueness that you do not see anymore or its really hard to come by. We enjoyed our stay and our son celebrated his 10th birthday here...amazing memories were made! Thank you!!❤️

Homey and good location

  • 5 of 5

It felt pleasantly like staying in someone’s grandma’s cabin: well-stocked, homey and spacious. The grounds were lovely for small children and the kitchen easy to use. Would stay there again or recommend to others.

Beautiful property

  • 4 of 5

Gorgeous period home, decorated with southern charm. We had some family from Texas visit us and the arrangement of the bedrooms and bath could not have worked out better. Would stay here again.

We did not rate this a five star because of a few issues that came up during our stay. The first full week we did not have access to WiFi, the owner was not available to help us work this out. During most of our stay the TV remote was not working well, some days the TV would not shut off and other days there was no sound . In addition we did see a few roaches around, my brother in law, who lives in Florida, said this is normal that they sneak in from open doors.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed the charm of this cottage during your stay. Yes, unfortunately the electronics were a challenge partly because my son and I were out of town the same week for a funeral. I will definitely add some specific instructions which should prevent this from happening in the future. Florida is a wonderful place to visit and live but we do put up with a few friendly bugs from time to time. Sorry they wanted to visit with you. Hopefully you get to enjoy the wildlife from your window next time. The deer and other wild animals visit many evenings. That's the joy for living near the woods.

Beautifully peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Diane made everything easy from check in to checkout. The cottage and setting is beautiful and just had the perfect "backdrop". Trees, flowers, birds singing. Sitting out on the porch was so relaxing that getting rained in did not bother us at all. We gathered there as a surprise for my husband's birthday. Everyone had a wonderful time. So many places to go explore we didn't get to do it all. the Mclay gardens and some kayaking right next door, sort of speak, will be the first thing we'll do next time if climate permits.. Hoping to go again soon.

Owner's Response: So glad you had a good time in Tallahassee. And , yes, the front porch is a step back in time. It surely reminds me of all the visiting done on the front porches before air conditioning.
