Real Log Home, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8), Private, Mgr on site
Arguably the nicest log home rental opportunity in the New River Gorge area. There is unique privacy for guests as the cabin is on 45 acres located just off the intersection of Rt. 19 and Rt. 60. There are outstanding views from the hiking paths with a mountain top site for year-round sunset watching and star gazing. Plenty of challenging mountain biking opportunities. Enjoy seasonal opportunities including berry picking, sleigh riding and wildlife watching. Inside the cabin has a huge stone fireplace with firewood provided and an outdoor fire pit (and picnic table). XM radio, premium cable with Netflix, 4 new flat screen televisions, wireless internet, cell phone coverage, dishwasher, washer/dryer for the comfort of guests gives you modern comforts in a country setting. There is a catch and release stocked pond with no fishing license required on the property (seasonal as Lilli pads are predominate in the summer). Well stocked kitchen.
This is a nicely decorated true log home-not one piece of drywall. The kitchen is well equipped for all your cooking and grilling needs. Large lower master suite with new king size memory foam mattress and private bath. There is an additional ½ bath off the vaulted living room, dining area and kitchen (with eat-in counter). Upstairs there are two bedrooms-one queen bed and one full and a loft with a futon. There is a nice sized bathroom upstairs as well. Out front there is a 48’ long porch with Adirondack chairs and a swing. Off the living room is a large screen enclosed patio with a large hot tub/Jacuzzi with outdoor speakers to enjoy the XM radio. There is also a table to enjoy meals outside.
In the event that the Chestnut is not available give us a call as other lodging options are available on the 70 acre property.
You are approximately 5 minutes from the New River Gorge Bridge, the visitor’s center and the access road down to the New River (Fayette Station). Multiple rafting companies as close as 5 miles. There is a “Foodland” grocery store within two miles for your convenience. You are 15 minutes from Summersville Lake, 15 minutes to Hawks Nest State Park and 50 minutes from Winterplace Ski Resort.
Fred and Brenda are onsite to provide check-in information and to assist and provide information to help you enjoy your stay. The guest book is filled with wonderful reviews and a great source for recreation and dining ideas. Two very frequently mentioned compliments are the cleanliness of the house and Fred and Brenda’s hospitality.

About Brenda or Fred
We purchased this lovely farm after I (Brenda) pointed it out to my husband Fred on a drive one day and told him I would love to have a place like that someday. Well my wish came true!!! We once ran a very proserporus B&B here and even had many celebrities visit, but as Fred says 'we stopped because we got Jimmy Dean disease' from cooking so much sausage. We now offer our detatched guest cottage, the 'Evergreen', a second newer log home and one attached, but separate entrance guestroom to the main house. We will let you do the cooking. We pride ourselves in offering a unique experience, high cleanliness, great service and a 'non-commercialized' enviroment. We are on site at all times.
Brenda or Fred purchased this Cabin in 1987

Great cabin, great location, great vacation!
Wonderful cabin ideally located a short drive away from Fayetteville, hiking, and whitewater rafting!
Well maintained retreat with a lovely screened porch with hot tub for enjoying the outdoor air minus (most of) the bugs, central air for cooling off on hot days, TV & wifi for watching or catching up on football games on the weekends, great firepit & charcoal grill outdoors, and comfortable beds!
Helped make our trip to West Virginia a wonderful vacation!
Thank you Ross for the review and for leaving the Chestnut cabin very nice. The cabin is in a great location, private but close to all the available activities in the area. Fayetteville with the great restaurants is just a short drive away, the Gorge Bridge never fails to amaze especially if you take Fayette Station Road and see the under structure of the bridge.
The cabin has everything that you need for the visit except charcoal for the grill and laundry detergent, so that packing and unpacking is a breeze for our guests. The hot tub is always drained, cleaned and refilled for our guests, the mowed paths around the property with great views of the area provide your very own hike. We value our guest and work to have everything just right when they arrive. See you next year Ross.
Wasn't disappoint at all.
Cabin was very nice and stocked with everything we could have needed. The hot tub was fantastic after white water rafting all day. Brenda was very friendly but did not impose at all. The six of us had a fantastic weekend. Thank you so much!
Once again, we have great guests visiting the Chestnut and leaving it very nice. The cabin has all that is needed for a visit except charcoal for the grill and laundry detergent, so that packing for the visit is simplified for our guests. The hot tub on the covered, private screened porch is drained, cleaned and refilled for each guest visit. The view from the porch especially at night with all the sparkling stars is breathtaking, what could be better than the cool nights in a fresh clean hot tub and a wonderful look at the night sky. Fred and I are available if guests need us for information or a problem with the cabin but we respect their privacy if we are not needed.
Beautiful home and great hostess!!! So conveniently located to all the nearby adventures!!!
We booked this home for our family vacation and could not have been more impressed!! The house was even better than we expected and had everything we needed. Such a beautiful property and so conveniently located!! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!!!
The Evergreen is a historic cabin with built in chestnut cupboards and mantle but has most conveniences of home. The cabin has a wood burning fireplace with the fireplace ready to light when you arrive in the colder months, firewood is also provided for the fire pit located just off of the covered very private hot tub porch. The hot tub is drained, cleaned and refilled for each guest visit so that you have a sparkling clean hot tub when you arrive. The Evergreen has Wi Fi, premium cable, linens, towels, garbage bags, paper products, coffee and filters, all that you need for the visit is charcoal for the grill.
The cabin is located on the almost 70 acre property, where there are hiking paths with great views of the area as well as being within 12 miles of most activities in the area.
Having great guests like John and Julie make all the work keeping the cabin clean and stocked a pleasure.
Everything as described and then some
I can't find enough good things to say about Chestnut. Do I start with location? Cleanliness? Amenities? Privacy? Brenda's genuine southern hospitality? Bottom line, everything was exactly as described and then some.
First location: 2 minutes off the highway and a 10 minute drive to all of the things to do near Fayetteville and the New River Gorge area. Easy to find (just don't ignore Brenda's directions) and while close to everything you still feel very secluded (sans the occasional car you could hear, but not see).
The cabin was immaculate and well decorated (not one of those overly lodge-esque type of places if that makes sense) and had everything you could need for the trip. The bed (my wife and I want the mattress in the master bed) was extremely comfortable, as was the couch and chairs. The hot-tub was great to relax in after our hikes and you can tell it was fresh. There is an outdoor fire pit and a grill ready for you. Although we didn't use either. Pots, pans, utensils, coffee maker, fridge etc, etc, etc. Nice to have TV with Netflix, Amazon Prime (if you have an account) and direct TV. Nice to have wifi, for late evening web surfing, but don't abuse it, you're on vacation - unplug a bit (LOL) and XM radio.
As mentioned, close to everything but once on the property you don't really know it. It really does feel like you're on your own private property even though Brenda's house (and another cabin) was near by. ZERO complaints!
Now let's talk about the best part of everything -- Brenda. What an amazing host. From the communication prior to arriving (directions, things to do, places to eat) to friendly conversation upon check out, to follow up's after our departure (including going above and beyond to provide mattress info for us -- did I mention comfy). When my wife and I left, we didn't feel as though Brenda was our host, we felt we made a friend. Just a genuine down to earth person.
A few tips: Easy to find, just follow Brenda's directions. Try the restaurants Brenda recommends (just be prepared to wait a bit if going to Secret Sandwich). If you like hiking, again, take Brenda's recommendations (we regret doing one of her recommendations but not the other -- next time). Eat, drink and shop local (except Bojangle's -- support them so they stay in Fayetteville - lol.)
Thanks for everything Brenda! Can't wait to get to the area again and hopefully Chestnut is available when we do!
Dennis has written the most thorough review, if you read it then you know all about the Chestnut, the property, location, amenities, the area, restaurants as well as the beauty of the area. He is most kind with his review of your host, I do try to help every guest know about the area, about what is important for them to experience during the visit. Without our guests we would not have the cabins, would not have met the best people from all over the world, would not have the friendships that have developed over the years.
The New River Gorge area is special, most activities are tucked away so that the area is still rural, the landscape not compromised by being too commercial. There are many activities available in the area with adventures suited to all levels of ability, our cabins are located near most but still have privacy for the guests.
Dennis and his wife have already became friends after only one visit. We are fortunate to meet such interesting people.
Everything was perfect!
We were fortunate to find such a lovely place to land each evening after the Jamboree. It was quiet, roomy, clean and well equipped. The surroundings were beautiful and had we not been exhausted from working with over 500 Boy Scouts in a Makerspace each day we would have loved to explore the trails.
Thank you Kathryn for taking such good care of the cabin, we appreciate your having chosen the Chestnut for your West Virginia visit. The Chestnut is a log home with an open great room, dining room and kitchen. It is fully equipped with all that you need for the visit so that you can enjoy more of the area activities.
There are hiking paths on the property with great views of the area, the cabin is within 12 miles of most activities in the area.
Fantastic stay at The Chestnut!
Our family stayed here for 3 nights and loved it. Between the nicely decorated and fully stocked cabin, the lovely front porch, the hot tub, the piped in XM music, the fire pit, the grass area in front of the cabin to play games, the privacy and seclusion despite being close to the highway and all Gorge activities, as well as the 60 acres of beautiful land on the property to explore (wild meadows, abundant wildlife), we were all very impressed and fully enjoyed our stay at The Chestnut. Brenda was very welcoming and available if needed. We look forward to our next visit! Thank you so much for an enjoyable get-away for our family.
The Chestnut is a real log home equipped with a Smart Television, XM radio with speakers inside and on the screened hot tub porch where the tub is drained, cleaned and refilled for your visit. As Kim mentioned being in the hot tub looking at the stars with your choice of music playing in the background is a benefit of choosing the Chestnut for your area visit. If you need to work the cabin offers Wi Fi, cell phone coverage is excellent. The cabin location is convenient to area activities, local excellent restaurants and still offers privacy with great views.
Dogwood cabins are located within 12 miles of most activities in the New River Gorge recreation area. The New River Gorge Bridge, home of the October Bridge Day event when people come from all over the world to BASE jump legally from the Bridge, is only 6 miles from the cabins. Hawks Nest State Park is 6 miles west of the cabins and has a tram from the lodge to the New River where an exciting jet boat ride will take you under the New River Gorge Bridge so that you can see for yourself the amazing structure of the bridge. In the area near Hawks Nest State Park be sure to visit the Mystery Hole for a unique look at local humor and illusion. Babcock State Park is 12 miles east of the cabins and offers a working grist mill, fishing lake with paddle boat rentals, horseback riding and easy to difficult hiking trails. Summersville Lake is located 12 miles north of the cabins off of Rt. 19, the lake offers pontoon rentals, rock climbing and a swimming beach. Just a few miles farther on Rt 129 a visit to Carnifax Ferry State Park offers picnic areas, horseshoe pits and an outstanding viewing platform that looks down on the Gauley River Whitewater's most difficult rapids. The town of Fayetteville, six miles south on Rt. 19, offers locally owned restaurants, an antique mall, a rock climbing store,a mountain biking shop as well as a local live theater. There are several whitewater rafting companies nearby, canopy and ziplining tours available. There is a fascinating opportunity in Beckley, about 24 miles south on Rt. 19, to go into a once viable underground mining tour, there is also a children's interactive museum on the grounds with actual miner's homes, both workers and the superintendent's homes. The new Boy Scout Adventure Park is just 15 miles from the cabins south on Rt. 60 at the Glen Jean exit. The cabin property's driveway is part of the historic James River and Kanawha Turnpike. The hiking paths have outstanding 360 degree views of the area. There are many more outstanding and exciting adventures in this beautiful mountain area, I am amazed everyday that I live in such a naturally beautiful area.
