About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 3.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

The Willow Cottage is one of only two beautiful cottages on Cold Mountain's 200 Riverfront acre development... This page features The Willow, but if your dates are taken for The Willow Cottage, please be sure to check the availability of VRBO Listing 355657 or simply email or call us. Above all- watch the video! You will be glad you did. Please see more on our Facebook page: The Cottages at Cold Mountain

Just take a look at the pictures...the cottage was designed by renowned architect Keith Summerour and the idea was to take the very finest elements of luxury homebuilding and scale them down to an enjoyable, sensible size of 2300 feet. In the indoors, we wanted guests to be able to enjoy the very best materials, craftsmanship and design--understated elegance. The exterior features locally harvested stone, cedar siding, and unbelievable Ludowici clay tile roofing. Guests will feel at once that they are stepping back in time to an era when craftsmanship and materials still mattered, and stepping forward into the future with flatscreens wired with digital cable, GoogleTV and unlimited on-demand Netflix.

The kitchen, dining and living areas are fully integrated with an all-stone terrace complete with wood burning fireplace and antique timber-framed porch. The kitchen features plaster walls, beautiful views, a Wolf range, two Subzero refrigerators, soapstone countertops and custom cabinets.

The Willow Cottage is one of two cottages located within the private, gated riverfront conservation community called Cold Mountain. The clear waters of the East Fork River run through the property, and our guests have access to 1/2 mile of it The 200 acres features the river which is within 300 feet of the cottage. The cottage is located in the heart of the meadow area of Cold Mountain and is within 100 feet of an historic dairy barn (no animals today). A private activity field for soccer, volleyball or chasing fireflies is 100 feet away as is an apple orchard, small vineyard and raspberry and blackberry patches. (Great for the morning's cereal.) The upper 1/3 of Cold Mountain is very mountainous and guests can hike, mountain bike, ride horses, camp or picnic at 4,000 feet if they wish.

You will need to carefully consider the town that is close by. If you haven't discovered Waynesville, do yourself a favor and check it out. This year, no less a source than the L.A. Times called Waynesville 'the perfect blend of mountain charm and sophistication.' Art galleries, tailgate markets, incredible wine store (Wineseller) just 15 minutes away. Want to take advantage of something in Asheville--35 minutes away. We love Asheville too, but the truth is it is a city, which is what we believe a lot of people are seeking to escape. Stay in the country, use Waynesville as your anchor town and cherry-pick the best of Asheville's offerings. Now, you are 35 minutes away from Asheville and 15 minutes from Waynesville, but that gives you the payoff of a spectacularly beautiful, riverfront setting. Plus, you are in the direction of something... Pisgah National Forest begins just 5 minutes south of the property and leads you into some of the most beautiful and iconic places in the Eastern US--Sliding Rock, Mount Pisgah Inn, Looking Glass Falls and many more are within 20 minutes for a truly unlimited amount of recreational potential. Finally, Springdale Golf Club (18 holes) is directly across the street for any family members wishing to keep a swing sharp.

We built and furnished the Willow Cottage because we were generally disappointed with the quality of both the homes and properties available for vacation rental. Also, being flatlanders from Hilton Head, we had grown tired of those terribly steep properties that have nice views, but nothing to do. The Willow Cottage at Cold Mountain is an absolutely unique offering in Western North Carolina with views, water and lots of room to roam... thank you for taking a moment to consider us. We look forward to hearing from you.

About Melba Ballew

The Willow Cottage is owned by two families, one from Hilton Head and the other from Santa Fe, who came together to create a vacation offering that they had always sought, but seldom found: sufficient beauty, warmth and luxury to restore the adults, but lots of room-to-roam onsite in free pursuit of adventure for kids (and kids at-heart) so that they must be called-in from outside.

Melba Ballew purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Melba Ballew chose Smoky Mountains

We chose Cold Mountain and the Cruso Valley as the location for the Willow Cottage because it is the perfect balance between country and city living. Any closer to Asheville, and we were not getting our “River Runs Through It” fix; any farther from Asheville felt a little too “Deliverance” or required traversing winding, nauseous roads. Also, being from two popular tourist destinations—Hilton Head and Santa Fe—we wanted a mountain experience that felt like a genuine getaway, rather than a duplication of our country club environs back home or, worse, the contrived resort-town experience.

What makes this cottage unique

The stage is set for you to create your own experiences. Grab one of our flyrods and wade the river, or a Zebco instead and help a child catch a first fish in the pond. Work with a local chef for a catered dinner on the sunset knoll or pack pimento cheese sandwiches to eat riverside. Tube the river or read a novel start-to-finish in the hammock under the birches with the river flowing alongside. Risotto and your favorite red at The Chef’s Table in Waynesville, or hamburger, fries and a chocolate malt at Jukebox Junction in Cruso. The list goes on and on and we are available to give you as much help as you like in planning activities for a long-remembered mountain vacation.

We had a wonderful stay at Willow Cottage. The home is beautiful, the decor is lovely, the setting is perfect. We would definitely recommend this property and would love to come back. It is quiet and pastoral but with all the amenities you could need. The town of Waynesville is only a fifteen or twenty minute drive with a nice grocery and lots more. We were there with our adult children but it would be a great place with little ones. There's plenty of room to run and roam, the river is right there to enjoy and you can hike on the property. The game pavilion is nice and there's a fire pit just above the river nearby. We very much enjoyed the outdoor fireplace on the back porch. We loved the kitchen and spent much of our time there cooking and baking while making our own little beverage bar. The house was decorated tastefully for Christmas with a live tree and greenery here and there. It was one of our favorite times away. We were sort of "sklpping" Christmas so this was just the place. We got to enjoy the decorations without putting them up or taking them down! Next time we will go early, before our kids arrive, and stay after they leave.

A Wonderful Thanksgiving 2016!

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful place to spend Thanksgiving with our family! The Willow Cottage met our needs perfectly. My husband and I hiked and enjoyed the fishing, our college age daughters loved the serene places to relax and study for finals, my elderly parents appreciated how they were able to walk through the cottage with ease and sit on the picturesque patio in front of the fire. We were all so impressed with the incredible property, as well as the beautiful cottage that is so well stocked with everything needed. It is very difficult for my parents to travel these days due to health issues - our trip to Willow Cottage was definitely worth the effort it took to get them there. The memories we made there were priceless. Thank you!

Couldn't have been happier with the property.

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property for just total relaxation. We stayed in the Willow and couldn't have been more impressed. Very clean and came with everything imaginable that could be needed. Worst part of the visit is that we couldn't stay much longer. We will be back for sure.

Amazing and perfect.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at Willow Cottage. The grounds are huge, providing countless hours of fun. We felt so isolated in the best way. Our children are 5, 5, and 2 and had the best time exploring. The house is wonderfully stocked; one of the best VRBO experiences we have ever had. Will definitely be back.

Unique Property

  • 5 of 5

This was a great get-away! The "cottage" is beautiful, well equipped and very clean. The grandchildren (10 and 7) had a blast. They caught lots of fish and a large turtle. Really enjoyed the patio fire. The Chef's Table restaurant in Waynesville is VERY good. I wish I knew more about the history of the place. It's as if a development were envisioned, started and not finished. Which is actually nice because instead of a lot of houses, you have beautiful wide opened spaces.

Willow Cottage-My Favorite Mountain Retreat

  • 5 of 5

My family had a three day vacation on a magnificent piece of property and a perfectly designed luxury cottage. Luxury is probably the wrong word, because it has a rustic ambience. Every room is generous in size, including the bathrooms. The materials used to construct this house are first rate, as you can tell from the photos. The cottage is much more impressive in person than the photos convey. You're comfortable right out of the gate. There's fly fishing, hiking, games if you choose, or just relaxing on the terrace. I'm a coastal person at heart and this is the first time I've stayed at a mountain location that is secluded like Willow Cottage. I'll be returning every year.
