You will not need a car. Built in 1890 and renovated in 2010, the house combines historic charm with a modern layout. It has a completely open floor plan on the main level. It is furnished comfortably for a family of four (five if counting a crib) without cramming. Larger families may want to consider a combined rental of this property with the ground floor flat in the same structure (HomeAway #340015). The main house and ground floor flat are totally independent, with separate entrances and mechanical systems.

Your rental includes a free permit for street parking. However, due to our proximity to the major tourist attractions we recommend not renting a car. Should you need a rental vehicle for a day to visit out-of-town sites, there are rental car offices minutes from the house.

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this townhome unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed staying here with our two kids that are 10 and 12. The location was great and we were able to walk to many sights and the metro/bus at Union Station. The Circulator bus that goes around the mall was terrific and we could just walk to Union Station to catch it. Very safe neighborhood and close to a neighborhood market grocer. We would stay here again. Thank you!

Everything you need close to sites

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay! Plenty of room for family of four. All the cooking supplies we needed with nearby Whole Foods and eastern market. Toiletries provided were very nice. Comfortable living room for visiting. Close to the metro and easy walk to Capitol and mall areas. Street noise loud from master bedroom but calms down later in the night. Beautiful neighborhood. Having Two bathrooms was handy. Coded door was an easy way in at the end of the day. No fumbling for keys. The write up and recommended items on the owner manual were helpful. The owner is very responsive to any needs and quick to act. Thanks Alec for a great stay!

Perfect location for a DC stay!

  • 5 of 5

My family of four stayed here for a 2 night visit to DC and loved the location and all of the comforts of this beautifully furnished apartment. Lots of great restaurants within waling distance and also the Mall and Capitol about a 15-20 min walk away. Uber was also really easy to get so we just parked the car and left if once we arrived. I would definitely recommend this apartment for any one wanting a convenient and comfortable place to stay in our nation's capitol.

Car: not necessary

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk.
